Why do some people get stressed when brewing?

The most overrated saying in this hobby is "relax don't worry relax have a homebrew." I personally hate that saying, especially when used during the process of brewing and used as a response to someone's question. Question: Should I make a yeast starter? I didn't and pitched into 1.080 wort...

    Thoughts on Secondary Fermenting

Secondary if you will be adding something like dry hops, fruit, etc AND you want to wash/reuse the yeast. Otherwise, all that can be done in a primary. Although racking an IPA onto whole leaf hops and not battling both the hops and trub/cake at bottle/keg time is also another good case for the...

    MO/Amarillo SMASH

If you want a hop forward smash put together a high IBU hop schedule and brew a 1 or 2 gallon batch and see how you like it. I'd personally go in the mid 30s for IBUs and let some of that tasty MO shine through.

Filtering wort from pot to fermenter

Whirlpool when chilling and siphon it out is one way. Especially useful if using fining agents. If I use a strainer after using whirlfloc, there really isn't a point. It all ends up in the fermenter and then it blows major chunks during fermentation and I lose more beer to trub. Normally, I use...

    Maillard Malts, who's used em'

Thanks. Maybe someone will chime in. I was considering ordering enough for a few batches to try but wanted to get some opinions first. Of course my NB catalog goes on and on about how good they are.

Do not sanitize oxygen absorbing bottle caps???

There is a thread on this forum about this from years back. I'd say you're safe to sanitize them. Here is what one of the posts read; "James on Basic Brewing contacted the manufacturer to ask this very question to him. He said that sanitizing is absolutely no problem, because while the caps do...

    Maillard Malts, who's used em'

It looks like Maillard was trademarked by Northern Brewer in Nov, 2013. Is this repackaged grain under a new name? A new product? A result of the NB/Midwest merger? Anyone know anything details about these malts. Anyone use them and have opinions? Thanks!

    Rehydrate Dry Yeast Issue

I've rehydrated at about that temperature before with Nottingham that had the rehydration temp of (86F I believe) right on the back of the packet! Caught it after I pitched it (within 5 degrees of wort) and was paranoid. It did take off a little slower than I was used to but the next evening it...

What size stock pot would i need for 5-6 gallon all grain

Indoor? Outdoor? 8 gallons will work. It will be tight though and require you babysit the pot for any boil overs. You can also get a cheap 9 gallon stainless 2 weld pot homebrewing.org with a stainless ball valve and thermometer for not much more. That's if you're trying to stay in that price...

Millar's Mill vs. Cereal Killer - Help me decide

JSP Malt Mill model A. Shipped from JSP for $168. Great mill and will last you as long as you brew. I would go with that or the MM 2.0. Otherwise, if you want to go cheap, the cereal killer seems to get great reviews. For only 68 more dollars the JSP A will get you a US made, 10 inch long, 1.5...

    Taking gravities

Get a refractometer. Brew day is enough work already. Pour a spoonful and get an instant reading. Just make sure you have a temp correcting model. Amazon. 30 bucks. I'm way too impatient to deal with pulling and chilling samples. If you want you don't need the hydro at all on brew day. Northern...

    Monster Mill or Captain Crush

I know. I'm not too far but it's still cheaper to get it from JSP directly than Northern Brewer who also sells it for more and hits you with shipping. As far as the adjustability here is what JSP says about it. So take it for what it is I guess. I have the A model. There is an AA that's priced...

    Efficiency/Gravities.. Frustration

That's how I do it. Before first runnings I do the mash infusion step which adds water to account for grain absorption to yield close to equal runnings. So after mash at ratio, been mashing at 1.50 qts/lb I add 185-190 degree water mash infusion to get the grain bed up close to 168. I give that...

    Efficiency/Gravities.. Frustration

How are you sparging? What was the first running gravity? The sparge gravity? Use a refractometer? Did you mash out? Temp of the sparge water? The crush could be it, but too many people assume the process is flawless and if only the crush was finer, the efficiency would go up.

    Monster Mill or Captain Crush

+1 on the JSP. Quality USA made mill with some mojo. Has been around for a long time, predates the others. The model A will allow you to adjust, but the P model produces a great crush but maybe not as fine as some would like at .045 inches. The hopper is also small so you may need to build a...

    Pellets Vs Leaf Hops

When I dry hop with whole leaf hops next time I will add them to a secondary using a funnel and rack the beer on to it. After you dry hop with these come back and let me know if you think that's a good idea. I'm betting you might.

First All Grain Brew - Check My Plan

Your total water needed is 8 gallons due to grain absorption. At 10 pounds of grain figure 1.25 gallons absorbed during mash in. So if you mash close to 1.25qt/lb you'll mash in at about 3 gallons. Let it rest for 60 minutes or what your recipe calls for then after the 60 minutes is up and...

    Chlorine, Chloramine, and Campden Tablets

The most overlooked drug in using tap water, carbon filtered or not, is fluoride. It's rarely talked about. You won't find any threads longer than a couple replies about it yet you'll find pages on how aluminum kettles will kill you. If you are concerned about fluoride, birth control pills, and...

    Help with watery flavorless beer

Got it. Are you small batch brewing while troubleshooting? I would think making some 1 gallon batches would be a good idea while trying to figure out the problem.

New to all grain, Questions on sparge and vorlauf.

    1. Until it runs clear as in no husks coming through and has a tea like appearance. Could take a couple of cups or a couple of pitchers. The grain bed will settle nicely after running a pitcher or so. 2. You could vorlauf immediately. I usually wait about 5 minutes to let the grain bed...
