    Sterilizing

I can get my hands on a UV sterilizer for very cheap, anyone ever try these to sterilize their washed bottles? Seems like it should work with proper UV and ozone safety precautions, I used to work with UV lasers years ago and know just how dangerous uncontained shortwave UV can be.

    Big hello fellow brewers!

My wife OTOH like the a good coal tar stout. I never acquired a taste for those but make it for her, so she has her very own batches to drink. She is good for about 1 bottle a week average so it really gets a chance to age. ;)

What is your favorite commerical beer?

I've found I like Fosters on occasion. I indulge in a couple oil cans of it when we head to the boat on the weekends.

The wife got me a complete system for Christmas

So I did my 1st 5 gallon recipe today, hopefully I got it right, time will tell... The wife got me these ingredients from the Brewshak down the street, I had to go buy a kettle for the boiling so I picked up an enameled steel pot which should work for the time being. 6.6 # Pale Malt...

The wife got me a complete system for Christmas

For the last year I have been using a Mr. Beer she got me last year, which served well to get me more interested and I learned the fundamentals. I'll probably fire it up today and start a batch. :D

The wife got me a complete system for Christmas

Now I have to learn to work with the 2 stage system, a lot more complicated but I;m sure after a couple times I'll get the hang of it. She also got me all the ingredients for my first batch of Red Eye Amber Ale. I think I'll keep her for a while. :D

    Exploding bottles

One of the reasons I like PET bottles is if they do explode I don't have glass to contend with. When I bottle I put the bottles in a cooler with the top closed, if some explode it is contained and so is the mess.

read if you use MR BEER kit

I've been using a Mr. Beer for the last year which has been a lot of fun. Now I know enough from reading and understanding the process to be a toxic avenger and am going to get a larger system. But nothing wrong with the Mr. Beer setup as an entry level to get more interested in it or maybe that...

    National Treasure

We enjoyed it as just mindless entertainment. I thought they did an excellent job of the pit. At least it wasn't a set of stairs they just walked down, but it played as an aged assembly on the brink of collapse.

I thought I pooched this batch

Well, I bottled it tonight. Did a taste test and it clearly has a different taste then when using corn sugar in the fermentor, I like it. This was the first time I've used dextrose instead of table sugar for the carbonation. Interesting that the dextrose made the beer foam quite a bit, even...

I thought I pooched this batch

Thanks Professor, I'll give that a try on the next batch. Tried a taste last night and it still has a hint of sweet so I'lll left it continue until Sunday. It still has a patchy layer of bubbles on top, and it is starting to clear. I imagine the DME takes a bit longer than corn sugar to complete...

The local brew store has a special running

Before I tell the wife I want it for Xmas I thought I would ask the experienced folks here. It contains: 7 gallon (I think) first stage fermenter food grade bucket with top and air lock. Glass carboy for the second stage. Hoses and fitting for siphoning. SG guage, and thermomater (sp)...

    mr beer people

Englishmens Nut Brown Ale is excellant if you like a slightly darker beer, and you can't go wrong with the Bewitched Red.

I thought I pooched this batch

Thought for sure I had screwed up the latest batch by experminenting. I decided that I didn't like the taste I was getting from the Mr. Beer in the lighter beers, sort of a cider bite. So I cruised up to the brew shack up the road and talked to the owner for a while. Walked out with dried malt...

    how to get odors out

I just dump a $1.79 quart bottle in straight, slosh it around and let it set for a bit. You'll know when it works because the smell will be gone, then just pour it out and rinse.

    how to get odors out

If it won't wash out I found that rinsing with peroxide does the trick for me. Use the plain peroxide you buy at the drug store. YMMV.

    bottles

I use bottled "spring water" I buy from the store in my Mr. Beer and it seems to work just fine. For bottles I am fortunate that the wife likes ginger ale (besides the beer I brew) and I reuse those bottles. 20 oz. bottles seem to work just about right for making single servings.

    Hello, new member here

I'm relatively new to brewing, been at it about a year now since the wife bought ma a Mr. Beer setup. Have to say I'm fairly pleased with the results but am starting to look for a more sophisticated setup. Only problem is 5 gallons is a fair amount of beer. ;) As I live in Tampa the weather...

    Help a beginner!

That is the standard iodine you can buy in any drug store or at the grocery store in the medical stuff isle. I wouldn't let rhe cooler soak with a chlorine solution for a couple days (unless I misunderstood you), chlorine is tough on some types of plastic. An hour or 2 should be sufficient...
