    So who's brewing this weekend?

i've got some tropical ipa yeast from last summer that was in a jar in the fridge i managed to coax back to life creating a starter right now. Plan is to do an IPA. I really like these high temp yeasts for 5 gallon batches. I can just leave them on the kitchen counter to churn away.

Thoughts on my first Pale Ale recipe

still a newb. For my own recipe's i've stuck with pale malt, pilsner malt and wheat malt. (with flaked oats or torrified wheat added) i've decided i can't tell the difference between a beer made with pale vs pils so i go with whatever is available and on sale in bulk. i picked up a couple...

    Homebrew Talk 3D Print Thread.

few taps i've printed up. the tiki is wood filament, the Easter island head is pet-g and for my blueberry wheat, the apple is for my hard cider. it's ABS that i vapor smoothed. once smoothed though it didn't take acrylic paint well. i had to blob it on then clear coat it. I did not design these...

    Propagation from Cuttings?

I have a few cuttings which were actually small bines I pulled out because they were growing where they shouldn't and had a lot of root. so i planted them. 2 are still green and appear to be growing now. 1 went limp. oh well.

What's the point of a mash out?

ha! I work from home so I mill and mash in on my lunch then just let it sit until quitting time then boil. but i just let it sit there. no recirculation. makes for an easy brew day when broken up like that.

    Pictures of hop plants

LOL! both my Arcadians and Hartwhicks have done this along a lot of bines pushing through the tiny space between boards of the planter I built next to the deck. I just had to cut out 6 more bines that were between a foot to 3 feet long growing outside the planter and under the deck. again. one...

Fermenters - is there anything new??

my lids are not modified on my 5 gallon buckets but i put plastic spigots on them. so much easier transferring to the keg. and the spigots come apart easily for cleaning.

    Trying temp control

well, premier blanc wine yeast took about 2 weeks to ferment out 4 lbs of sugar mixed with 5 gallons of water to almost 1.000 at high 60's. i'm making hard seltzer water if you were wondering.

Trying to find a 15 gallon plastic drum

I use two 50lb vittles vaults for fermenters because they fit side by side in my fridge. 14"x"14"20" they hold 13 gallons. just perfect for a 10 gallon batch. they are $39 each shipped off amazon. a little higher than what i paid for them last yr. the 80lb vittles vaults hold 20 gallons...

    Last yr's crop ruined?

So I just pulled all of my Hartwhick from last yr out of the freezer. every vacuum sealed bag is loose and there are ice crystals inside it. I opened every bag and they are wet to the touch and not very aromatic. they were in the back of the freezer so i never noticed. every one of my Arcadians...

My Ugly Junk- Corona Mill Station...

3rd year on my corona in a bucket mill. I added a 6" to 8" galvanized heater pipe adaptor to make an easier time of dumping grain into it from my 5 gallon grain bucket. it can hold 10lbs now. I need to build a table to hold it and the drill so i can just let it grind away instead of holding it...

    Sparkling "Hard" water recipe

my latest batch is just tap water with 8lbs of table sugar fermented with red star premier Classique and fermax yeast nutrient. mine stalled big-time with 4lbs of sugar and had that rhino fart smell. I think my kitchen floor was just too cold. so I moved it up onto the counter, added another...

Question about using pineapple into a NEIPA...

I have a pinapple wheat on my list to try. I'm using my home grown Hartwick hops which do have a subtle pineapple aroma and flavor that people pick up on without me saying anything. going to use tropical IPA yeast also so i'll need to see if my ferm chamber can get up to the high 80's with just...

Definitely clipping the first shoots next year. Here's why ...

my hops were about 3 ft. a few weeks ago. I trimmed them. they hit 3 ft again and i just got my trellis up. started training my bines up the twine and they were snapping. 95% of them were hollow. the smallest shoots though feel solid so i left them. I assumed the smallest shoots last time were...

Witbier Blue Balls Belgian Wit (Blue Moon Clone)

I'm looking to experiment with some lemon and pineapple wheats. since i have a lot of torrified wheat on hand (bought to make lots of this :) ) thinking I'll just use this grain bill as the base for them.

Question about using pineapple into a NEIPA...

just an FYI, i made a gallon of pineapple wine with a giant can of pineapple juice and a few cans of pineapple pureed. (what i had in my pantry about to hit it's use by date. i added a little yeast nutrient then used cheap wine yeast. it fermented just fine.

    Pictures of hop plants

It snowed on the bull shoots of my Heartwhick a few weeks ago. I trimmed them a week early at 3 ft because the non-hallow shoots were coming up. Usually i wait till may. compared to any other hop plant I have these things are hearty as heck. they are pushing through the small spaces between...

    Pictures of hop plants

coincidently I just sunk some 16ft 3x3's (a 2x6 cut in half and nailed together) into the ground for new trellis today. hopefully these fare better than the fence top rail.
