List of equipment on hand. What else should I get?

Id just like to make a suggestion on the racking cane. I have one and its never been used. Reason being, I bought an auto-siphon. Trust me, it's worth the $9.

    Lactobacillus? Acetobacter?

Yep. Exactly what I had to say...I use starsan and came across the same thing out of the airlock when I started brewing. An acidic bitterness is the best I can describe the taste. Beer was fine. There was one time after kegging a cider, I apparently didn't flush my serving line of starsan...

    Fermentation under carbonation..

Im trying to get around chemically stopping fermentation- I have a couple batches of cider fermenting with 1118 that Id like to 'back flavor/sweeten' with about 30% worth of apple juice. Ive read where the majority of yeast doesnt ferment well in a carbonic solution. My plans are to...

Glycol chilling of 55 gallon drum with stainless coil

Hey theres another good idea!....I'd think that be air tight as well. Couple thoughts I have to add with grommets tho- 1) The 3/8" tube would have to fit tight enough within the grommet to keep the weight of the coil supported off the bottom of the barrel, unless the coil can rest on the...

Glycol chilling of 55 gallon drum with stainless coil

I cant find a picture of a flanged backing nut....its a commercial part typically included with commercial back mount faucets for stainless sinks etc. Id say using a normal brass backing nut with a set of washers (also typically used for mounting faucets) wouldnt make a difference. Just go to...

Glycol chilling of 55 gallon drum with stainless coil

Ill track down some pics of these fittings. Unfortunately Im not at the shop, but I'll find some online to help a bit more. Basically my thoughts are to drill two holes in the lid for the nipples. Holes tight enough, where the nipple hand threads into the plastic. With equal amounts of the...

Glycol chilling of 55 gallon drum with stainless coil

As a plumber my first thoughts are purchasing a couple running thread brass nipples, 4 brass flanged backing nuts, and 4 female x compression adapters...siliconing the penetration so when both backing nuts tighted to each side of the lid it creates an air tight seal.

    Vissani 52 Wine Bottle Kegerator

Ive been waiting a few months to post to this thread since I purchased this same model from Home Depot at the beginning of Jan this year. After 4 months of using as a kegorator I can confirm these Pro's and Con's discussed earlier in this thread- Pro's-- * Inexpensive and zero 'cold...

Any Web Designers care to offer some advice

why? elaborate... Dude its a zero sum game at this point. Flash isnt outdated. HTML 5 isnt even standard yet, and fock, every focking thing we "think" as standard anymore (.mp3, h.264, .jpg, etc) are indeed owned by private companies. No different than Macromedia...ahem...I mean Adobe. Cough...

I may have to change banks.

Same institutions (banks) that contributed to the subprime crisis...yet as tax payers we had to bail their asses out??!? I dont know about you guys, but in my job, my poor decisions reflect on me. Theres no one to bail me out. I deal only with my credit unions.

Any Web Designers care to offer some advice

Man, Web 2.0 is here...I had a computer shop (sales, service, web design) few years ago before I closed my doors. Then, my approach was .css based on html 4. I catered to small biz and tried to make web presence affordable. To cut costs (time) I bought a lot of templates (no sense in reinventing...

The stupidest comment on your beer

What else does a diacetyl rest do?

I believe the biggest importance for a Diacetyl rest is because during aging, Diacetyl tends to increase. So if you have a beer at bottling that tastes fine with a slight buttery flavor, that flavor may be overpowering later as it ages. The rate of this increase is affected by temperature as an...
