    I Am NOT a Fan Of Star-San

My standard procedure is to soak bottles in a bucket of iodophor before placing on a draining rack and going straight to bottling. Have never had a problem. Lengthy contact will stain vinyl and white plastics, put has no affect on glass.

    The Grocery Store Challenge

This is sort of 'Back to the Future.' I got started in the early 70's with store items ... malt syrup, sugar, and bread yeast from the baking aisle of a local grocery. Fermented in a pickle crock with a towel on top, I was brewing Belgians before I ever knew they existed.

    Snow beer

I've tried melted snow, but out here on the farm where the wind blows I always end up with dirt in the bottom of the pot.

I keep getting lactobacillus in my beer. What can I do?

Agree with alternating sanitizers. The first thing I do, which often ends the problem, is to discard and replace all of my siphon lines.

What's The Best Deal You've Gotten on brewing Equipment?

I got a call one day from a local tavern who's Coca-Cola rep told them that the company was moving to bagged syrup and ... "toss all of your kegs in the dumpster." Ten pin-locks free. The bar later decided to get completely out of the draught business and sold me their 1/2 bbl. Beverage-Air...

    Drill for grain mill question

Picked up a 5/8" low-gear, corded spade drill on close-out a few years ago. Plenty of torque at lower RPM and is a permanent part of the MM3 milling platform. At the price I'm sure that the internals don't match the name brands, but it's fine for the few minutes it runs each month...

Any new tech/equipment came out the past year? any game changers?

The item I picked up in 2021 that has been used the most is the Tapcooler bottle filler. Have owned three other types of fillers, and the TC is by far the best for my purposes.

    Air Roasting?

Wife has used a FreshRoast SR500 for quite some time. Handles 4 oz. of green beans in around 9-10 min., and she usually roasts a pound per session. Started roasting in the garage, but a vent hood upgrade added to a kitchen remodel allows her to use the unit on her range top (especially nice in...

Komos Kegerator Bites The Dust at 14 months

This is all depressing. I have an 8-cornie chest freezer kegerator (purchased new and serviced by a local appliance dealer), but I've been considering front loaders (in my mid-70's ... still have no problems schlepping a full keg over the side, but those days may be numbered). I really wanted to...

Is it just me or are bottled conditioned Homebrew better than kegged?

A few years ago my wife mentioned that she thought my beers were better when I bottled rather than kegged ... might have been yeast scavenging O2 or something. Have much better control of that now. Besides, she was the one who opened the door to kegging by complaining about the rat maze of...

    Glass Cleaner of choice?

All of my beer/wine/liquor glasses get hand washed with Liquinox, a lab grade detergent. Stuff is pricey, but a little goes a long way and the mix in my cleaning bucket lasts a long time. Be careful handling the wet glasses, as they become super slippery.

Primo RO Water Refill at Walmart

I've never investigated, but is a low volume, tabletop softener/RO system a possibility? May be units on the market for all I know. I'd be willing to run with a 1:1 waste ratio, but 4:1 was always a deal breaker.

Primo RO Water Refill at Walmart

The latest Ward Labs report for my tap water showed 600 TDS, so I'm assuming that affordable home RO is out of the question. I did send a sample from the local Culligan kiosk to Ward which came back with a TDS of 17. As Buckeye_Hydro mentioned above, I assume that this figure may fluctuate a bit...

Primo RO Water Refill at Walmart

I mentioned in another thread that I once brought home supposed RO water from a Walmart machine, and it immediately turned milky-white when StarSan was added. I've never had that happen with water company kiosks such as Culligan.

StarSan (ChemSan) just mixed yet PH is bad

I've had water from Walmart RO machines turn milk-white when StarSan was added. Have never had that happen with the kiosks at water companies such as Culligan.

    Pin lock or ball lock

I started with ball locks but have both (10 pin locks gifted from a local tavern when Coke went to the bag system and advised the bar owner to toss the kegs into the dumpster). PLs are wider and shorter than BLs if either horizontal or vertical space is an issue. I have cross-coupled BLs, and...

Larry Bell Stepping Down, Selling to New Belgium's parent company

Kmmeuellr, your story had my wife and I in tears! Last time we were in the biergarten was a few years ago to hear Bruce Hornsby ... what a great evening. Since the new hierarchy ultimately leads to Kirin, I'm hoping that the Japanese emphasis on quality remains. They've done a good job with Four...
