    Tragedy

I actually did.. A shard of glass penetrated my heel. I had to remove it with my wife's tweezers. What a bloody mess! Maybe I should drop the beer brewing hobby and take up medicine school ;)

    Tragedy

It was a very sad weekend for me! I completed my first All Grain batch several weeks ago and added some dry hops in the secondary. I was about to gently deposit the carboy in my cooler when it slipped out of my hand and SMASHED on my concrete floor:mad: I didn't realize how much of a mess 5...

    Headspace in Secondary

What I get out of using a secondary is a very clean beer. I get compliments on how clear my brew is without even filtering it. And.. I like to add dry hops to my brew so I don't want all the hop pulp mixing in with the resting Yeast.

    Headspace in Secondary

I just read some guy's posting about how important it is to having zero headspace in the secondary. Is this true or just a myth? I've made about 6 batches of beer and always had a fairly large headspace and never had any issues. It's obvious that you'd get headspace when transferring because...

    Dual Coil immersion chiller

WOW!! Made my first 5Gal batch of AG last weekend and I was VERY impressed with the results of my chiller! It took under 10 minutes to cool it from boiling down to pitching temp. The only downside is that it cooled the boiling wort when I first immersed it in my brew keg. I guess there's too...

    The Dark side..

I was wondering if anyone can tell me how dark it should be while the brew is fermenting. I've read a bit on how UV can affect the outcome of the beer. But, I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid by putting blankets on the carboys which are stored in a pitch black storage room in the basement. I...

    First All-grain batch

Thanks, I was under the impression that the beer would be a lot cleaner if a secondary was used. I'd like to get into Kegs but I'll have to master the brewing process first. Then I'd have to convince the wife... Trust me!! I can't wait to get rid of the bottles!! Sanitizing bottles sucks!!

First All Grain Batch A Success

Wow.. So much math involved in AG brewing. I'm more of the Winging type. For me, it's more like baking a cake. Just follow the recipe... hope for the best.

1st All Grain Batch a Success, but dang that's a lot of trub

Wow! I noticed the same thing with my first AG batch. My problem is that I didn't recirculate the first runoff of Wort from my cooler. I was too excited that my mash tun actually worked so well :) Next time I'll just collect the runoff and poor it back on top of the grains! How was your timing...

    First All-grain batch

LOL. Love the avatar Walker. Sounds like sane advice. I think the reason it didn't take more time is that I had a couple extra hands to help lift/handle stuff. Also, The dual coil chiller I built dropped the temperature from boil to 26 degrees in just under 10 minutes.

    First All-grain batch

AWESOME EXPERIENCE!! I made my first batch over the weekend! Wow.. wasn't expecting it to take 5 hours. I made the Cremora Cream Ale that is included in the beersmith software. I think my mash efficiency is quite good. The recipe calls for 1.052SG and I got over 1.060. The brew is...

Grain to water or water to grain

LMAO!! This has been fun! Thanks for the info boys and sorry for posting a repeat question. I will add the grain to the water cause I don't want balls in my beer! ;)

    BeerSmith ABV%

I'm reading some recipes and noticed that a lot of recipes claim "say 5.5% ABV" but the acutal is 0.6%" Does this mean that their beer didn't ferment or was this just an input error? I'm looking to brew my first AG batch this weekend and don't want to waist my time making a 0.6% ale! Thanks.

Grain to water or water to grain

I'm about to do my first all-grain batch this weekend and I'd like to know.. do brewers add the grain to the hot water or do they add the water to the grain in the Mash tun? Please expand a little on your answers. Thank you.

    What are you drinking now?

Bud Light Lime... I was ashamed to admit this but I had to warn everyone else that was on the fence about trying this!! STAY AWAY!! Not only is it a disgusting Bud, but it's so watered down with hint of synthetic lime flavor! How can then even call this garbage BEER?? I'm so glad it was free!!

    Dual Coil immersion chiller

I'm thinking that both coils in series would work better because the water flows towards the path of least resistance. Having 2 coils merge into 1 path would cause resistance in the flow. I'd really like to find some info for comparison. If you are correct, it would be simple for me to modify.

    Dual coil chiller

I think you're correct Danger. This is why my coils are connected in series. The water will flow the same across the entire chiller.

    Dual coil chiller

I used 1/2 outer diameter refrigerant copper. I used lead free solder "Silver something.." My first time working with copper and didn't have any problems. Fittings for 3/8" fit perfectly. The 2 towers are 1/2" inner diameter copper.

    Blueberry wine question

I would recommend using fresh berries, specially at this time of the year! You can get large quantities from Costco. I'd also recommend experimenting with smaller batches. I personally use brown sugar or candy sugar I find white sugar gives it a cider like flavor.
