    Mill DYI

Great post! I have been wondering about making my own mill lately. I am still a noob extract brewer, so it is not on the must have list, but it would be nice to grind my own steeping grain. The only problem is I have not seen the inner workings of a “real” mill. So designing one that is...

How many gallons of EdWort's Apfelwein have been made?

Brewed up my first two gallons of it today. 1271 :tank:

Smack pack vs dry ferment time

I am by no means a pro at this but, I usually wait untill fermentation is done by checking with a hydrometer before transfering to the "clearing tank". I would take a hydrometer reading a couple days in a row, if needed, to see where you are at and then decide what to do. Liquid yeasts, at...

    Cherry Stout from concentrate....

I am brewing Papazian’s Cherry Fever Stout and a Cherry Wheat. Except instead of the fresh cherries, I am going to try a pure cherry juice concentrate that the local grocer carries in the health food dept. They also have it in blueberry which could work for future use. It states on the side...

    Bananas

Thank you for that! I'm confident I didn't screw anything up too bad in the brewing process. So as long as no one is screaming "Infection" I will definately hang on to them. As a matter of fact there magazine states that there Belgium kits/yeasts benefit greatly from a longer secondary and...

    Bananas

Yes I do have hard water (213) that also contains chloramines, which is why I originally thought it was a medicine like flavor. But definately bananas. brew and learn I guess. Just wish it didn't take two months to get another batch ready. :(

    Bananas

My first brew and it has been bottled for 4 weeks. It is Midwest’s Flat Tire clone. I used Wyeast 1214 smack pack and fermented at the low end of temps, 58-60F. Primary 1 week, secondary 2 weeks. I originally thought it had a medicinal flavor but upon further review by some fellow home...

    Low Final Gravity

I used AHS plain liquid, which I patiently waited for them to restock. They were out of it for about a week. Probably about as fresh of malt as you get I guess. Thanks for the replies everyone.

    Low Final Gravity

First off I’m not really concerned, just curious. I am brewing https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=20228Orfys Hobgoblin clone, extract w/grain, and Beer smith is giving me an estimated final gravity of 1.014. I, of course, forgot to take the starting gravity, but after 10 days in the...

    Purchase question

II would go with Midwest’s Better bottle kit, but that’s me. There are lots of discussions about the difference between glass and better bottles on this site if you are considering them. Just do your research until you can't resist the urge any more, and buy what you like. They all make good...

    top three equipment upgrades?

Still a newb myself, but: 1. Beersmith. For 20 bucks you can keep records, have a checklist, and play around with recipes(i.e boil size/hop additions) Especially when you can buy bulk malts and save $ by using a recipe rather than a "kit". 2. A good ss/brewpot 3. A library card ( lots...

    What about steeping Carapils

O.k I just found more info... http://morebeer.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11675&view=next&sid=ba80085b727482048d833f08cf2a8a18 Third post from the bottom of page 1 says this: I've read an official explanation by a Bob Widmaier of Briess officially saying that their Carapils...

    What about steeping Carapils

Another noob here. Only on my third batch. So does Carapils add any of the advertised characters to an extract batch? I have noticed that a few of the extract kits from Midwest include this, and my Fat Tire clone from there included Munich 10L, which is also supposed to be mashed. I am...

    Am I Screwed???!!!!

No bleach here. One step only so far. I was anal about sanitation too. Everything was thoroughly soaked and let dry. I did a closed loop transfer with my better bottles. I did add 2.5 gallons of tap water after the boil. I forgot to mention that it also had the taste before pitching...

    Am I Screwed???!!!!

Well, my local home brew buddies told me to shut up, relax, and have a brew. They use the same water I did, and they have brewed some delicious beer. After transferring the Wit, it does seem pretty tasty. So I will chalk this up as Noob impatience and add it to my notes. If it tastes like...
