    Refractometer Compensation

Some time back I purchased a refractometer which has ATC and reads SG as well. I was so disturbed by the discrepancy between my hydrometers (2) and the refrac that I quit using it almost immediately. I decided to try and understand my initial observations so I read for about three days on...

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

FYI... I had previously posted that all my effects at this brew while tasting great were slightly hazy. I've been trying to pin down the cause and I believe I have found it. It's my mineral adjustments to our water. OKC water is very good for brewing since it's basically a clean...

Wyeast vs. White labs vs. dry

I've used all with similar results. I've used Notty mostly because of the styles I've brewed. I like the results when it performs but it's also the only yeast I've used that's let me down. I've had two occasions where it did nothing for reasons unknown to me. When using a dry yeast I've...

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

This is what I was hoping to hear. I've used Notty on all of my Blondes. Next one will be with something else.... Thanks guys!

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

Now that's a real possibility! However, I have observed time, cold, nor heat seem to affect my haze. I do add minerals to my water which I guess could be a factor. Frankly this is my lightest beer so the minimal haze I see may be in everything I brew, I just can't see it. Whatever it...

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

I've been making this brew since it hit the forum. It's my all time favorite and most of my friends as well. Always the first to be opened and the first to go down. Basically, I've stayed true to the recipe and I've always hit my numbers. Easy brew to make. But... Every batch has been...

    Speidel Braumeister (brewmaster)

Thanks. I'm interested in seeing what gap systems like the Braumeister seem to work best with. I've used .035 forever on my conventional systems with good results. I gather the "brew-in-a-bucket" crowd benefits from a coarser grind to reduce the tendency of "fountaining" and "channeling"...

I'll agree the gap number isn't of any value... unless you want to discuss it.

You really need to invest in a set of feeler gauges. They are the only way to know what you're doing when you play with the gap. Just a few thousandths of an inch can make a big difference in your crush and efficiency.

What are you guys using for your crush setting on these? I've seen the question asked but haven't seen any input from anyone.

    Hopster Hopscreen

My 30 x 30 x .012 appears to keep the pellet hops contained. There was still a significant amount of trub to deal with but no green to be seen and the basket did have a fair amount of hop debris in it when done. No concern about utilization since the wort within the screen was very active...

    Hopster Hopscreen

I just completed the initial run using my 30x30x .012 screen. Mine was made for a 6 gal batch sized rig. It's about 4" in diameter by 12" in length. I used pellet hops for this Centennial Blonde brew. The screen appeared to catch most of the material since I found several teaspoons of...

    Making wine from kits

Actually I was asking anyone with some experience with high end kits. I'm wanting to make a top tier red of some sort but hate to stumble in cold. I looking for a kit that is recognize as a good step up in quality. We've made a couple of dozen kits ranging from the bottom to the middle of...

    Speidel Braumeister (brewmaster)

I assume the displayed temp is the process process temp of the SB. Has anyone measured the actual mash temp within the grain cylinder at multiple locations during a run to see how close it is with the displayed value? I am curious to see how consistent the mash temp is at various...

    Making wine from kits

I'm wanting to go up scale with a premium red kit. We've made a couple of dozen kits over the past three years or so. All were very drinkable and several were exceptional but at best about $10 wine. What is the best high end red kit you've made?

    Hopster Hopscreen

I'm in the process of making one with 30x30 mesh simply because it was available to me and free. Has anyone actually used a 30x30 mesh hopster? What were your results?

    Ball Valves

Looks good from here... Whats the servo on this?
  19. Sudz

    Ball Valves

If you elect to control a valve with some type of servo for some reason, you need to think through the actual torque required. Most manual valves have a fairly high force requirement to change their mechanism. Applying a servo to this type of valve really isn't practical. If you need...

    Ball Valves

Nothing wrong with using brass. Up until recently, most plumbing fixtures were brass in your home. Alternate materials are now used principally because brass is expensive. The cooking and restaurant business continue to utilize a great deal of brass. The lead issue is completely blown...
