New to 110v brewing : Grainfather or new Unibrau V3?

I haven’t yet. At this point, I’m kinda playing the waiting game to see whether Ss Brewtech comes out with something to compete in the eBIAB market in the next month or two. Otherwise, I still go back and forth between Unibrau/GF or DIY.

    Unibrau V3

Completely agree, but I do really like the way they designed that custom basket though...

Is SS Brewtech introducing an eBIAB system?

Yeah, I hope so too - it seems a little odd to make an announcement with literally no details about what the product actually is. The longer they keep us waiting, the more disappointed I’ll be to find out it’s just a big 3V system...

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

Briess is unfortunately creating confusion with their product naming here. They offer 2 different types roasted barley - a light one 300L and a darker one at 500L. They could’ve just called it light roasted barley and dark roasted barley, but they chose to name the one at 500L black barley...

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

Yes, I posted about this just a few posts back - black barley and roasted barley (the 500L) are the same thing called by different names. Avoid using anything called black malt or black patent.

    No sparge BIAB?

Is SS Brewtech introducing an eBIAB system?

Looks like it's finally happening! Just got an email from them mentioning "a complete line of electric brewing systems and modular components in late Spring 2018". Fingers crossed there's one that has most of what I'm looking for...

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

Do you know the Lovibond of the roasted barley you used? Some maltsters have a light roasted barley in the 300-350L range. The black barley that this recipe calls for is the black roasted barley around 500L, which is used in most stouts. Unless you used one of the light roasted ones, it sounds...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Let us know how it turns out. It's definitely possible, maybe even likely, that the first few glasses from the keg will have a bite that clears up quickly after any yeast/hop matter that made it into the serving keg clears out. Unfortunately, there's also a good deal of discussion in this thread...

Heady Topper- Can you clone it?

Yep - just tried a 10ml 60%AA hop shot 90 min boil addition in beersmith with this grainbill, and it's estimated at just under 60 IBUs. Only half of the estimate from the same addition in the OP. That explains a lot...

Heady Topper- Can you clone it?

Thanks for the input - it sounds like I maybe mistakenly assumed that the hop shot IBU calculation in the OP was being estimated in the same way as the bittering addition in my BS software. It looks like the OP IBU estimates are coming from beersmith or a similar software also though - maybe...

Heady Topper- Can you clone it?

I made a version of this recently with a few adjustments: 1) I didn't have access to hop extract locally, so i used warrior for bittering, targeting 105 IBUs (a bit under the estimated contribution from the hop shot in the OP). It was WAY too bitter. I'm guessing utilization of the hop shot...

New to 110v brewing : Grainfather or new Unibrau V3?

I don’t necessarily disagree with you that many or maybe even most users of those systems are satisfied with the power of those systems. I also agree that 120v is enough to maintain a good boil. However, (at least for me) the ramp times to mash temp and then to boil temp are more important...

New to 110v brewing : Grainfather or new Unibrau V3?

I have pretty much the same thoughts on this exactly. I was just about ready to pull the trigger on the V2 system in a 2x120V dual element configuration with the EZboil controller back in August when those options disappeared and the new V3 system was announced. Aside from the price increase, it...

Belgian Dark Strong Ale Westvleteren 12 Clone - Multiple Award Winner

I’m sure that it adds body, but in my experience, adding starches after the mash makes for a very cloudy wort and finished beer.

Belgian Dark Strong Ale Westvleteren 12 Clone - Multiple Award Winner

Wouldn’t you have to mash the oats? Why not just add some malt extract?

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

In my case, the motivation for keeping the boil hop material out of the fermenter is 2 things: 1) I like to ferment in a 5gal corny keg, especially for this style, to keep the beer from getting any exposure to O2 after fermentation has started. The more space in the fermenter that is taken up...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

It sounds like not having a system with a pump is what's making my life difficult. I'll need to bring this supporting data with me to the next meeting with our household expenses review board :) Do you have any sort of screen for the dip tube on your kettle? Have you had any issues with...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Thanks for the picture - what's the reason behind the need for both the dip tube screen and the hop spider? I'm considering building or purchasing an electric system with a pump at some point in the next year, but currently, I have just a simple BIAB setup. That's part of my concern with using a...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

With this style, I feel like the minimum amount of trub/wort I leave behind when doing a straight transfer to fermenter with an auto-siphon is around 2G-2.5G from a 6.5G post boil volume. I'm getting a lot of hop material transferring by the time I get down to 2G remaining. If I want 6G in the...
