    Craft Beer Price Sticker Shock!

I ever go pro (not that I have any actual plan, but hey, I'm a dreamer), I would love to do it as a "worker cooperative". The idea would be for all employees should have a decent pay, to make enough "profit" to invest, get better results, grow reasonably, etc., while maintaining prices as low as...

    Craft Beer Price Sticker Shock!

I'm in Gatineau, Quebec (Canada), just accross the river from Ottawa, and I too was shocked at the price of pint, if you're not during Happy Hours. 9$ (CDN) a pint for an okay beer is insane.

What are your contrarian/"unpopular" beer opinions?

Funny, I started using Nottingham recently and I prefer it (a lot) to US-05. I actually find it cleaner (ferm temps 65, slow ramp up to 70) than S-04 and US-05. Interesting.

LHBS Manager Here...What Do You Want From The LHBS?

I haven't read through the whole thread, but my "ideal" LHBS would allow me to make an online order, package it properly, and let me pick-it up at the store in a quick trip (during lunch time or in the evening). Since I planned my brewdays well in advance, as long as it's ready with what I want...

    New INTERTAP Faucets...beyond frustrated

That's interesting. I just built my kegerator (4 taps) with new "kits" from a Canadian online supplier. Each tap has only 5 feet of beerline (Bevlex 3/16 ID), with SS Intertap faucets. The pour is perfect at around 12 PSI. Fridge just below 40. I'm surprised by all these accounts of absolutely...

What are your contrarian/"unpopular" beer opinions?

My "contrarian" opinion is as follows: Since I started homebrewing (a little more than a year ago), I actually GAINED respect for the mega-breweries out there. To turn out such a volume, with such consistency, distributed everywhere, is quite something. The macro-adjunct-lager may not be...

Which hops do you dislike the most and why?

Funny about Centennial: I did a Maris Otter/Centennial SMaSH a few months ago, and while it was OK, it had a weird taste I couldn't describe very well. Kind of minerally/earthy, that I wasn't expecting. It got better as it mellowed down, and I think I overhopped a little, but I now hesitate to...

3 taps - what would you chose?

I recently acquired a fridge that had been modified to be a 4-tap kegerator (4 holes at the front). I currently have two taps, and I'll get two next week. My plan is to always have on tap these three "types" of beer: - A "hoppy beer" (IPA, Double IPA, session IPA, maybe APA) - A "blond" beer...

Blonde Ale Bière de Taverne (Canadian Blonde Ale)

I wanted to brew something similar to a Molson Export, mainly to know if I could brew a simple, clean blonde ale. It turned out probably more similar to Labatt 50, and I actually enjoy it quite a lot! After some research, I decided to take Biermuncher's Centennial Blonde as a base, and I...

How many times can I use / reuse yeast

Take a look at this: http://brulosophy.com/methods/yeast-harvesting/ Very simple, in my opinion. This method asks for overbuilding your starter by the equivalent of a vial (100 billion cells), using a calculator like this one: http://www.brewunited.com/yeast_calculator.php The night before...

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

Just a quick update: they are sending me another unit (already in the mail) and I'll send them back my unit. Good customer service!

Stove Top Small Batch Brewing Question (BIAB)

I do stove-top "Maxi BIAB", with a 4-gallon kettle. I'm able to do "regular" gravity beers in 4 gallon batches. I end up with 2.5 gallon of concentrated wort, and then dilute with fresh cold water (top-up to 4 gallons). It works well for me. Pros: - Not too long to get 3.5 gallons to boil -...

    Refractometer Question

I think this is a case of evaporation. A few drops of a boiling liquid on a the refractometer will evaporate quickly (less water = higher density). I guess the idea would be to take a small sample, let it cool somewhat, and then take the measurement?

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

Mine has a problem to: battery life seems to be going down every time I change the battery. Yesterday, I put a new battery in while the wort was cooling. My phone was receiving the signal correctly. About one hour later, when I pitched the Tilt in, there was no signal at all. For my previous...

    InBev Strikes Again

And they are slowly being bought one by one. The concept of "monopoly capitalism" (sorry, I think I used the French "capitslisme momopolistique") is that the need for capital accumulation (always more and more, no end to the need to increase profits) tends to create monopolies over time. It...

    InBev Strikes Again

The missing part is that they want to do it with an "accountant" mentality, cutting costs wherever possible, including slightly reducing quality, detail by detail, if they think they can get away with it. At their scale and volume, every minor reduction in cost can result in It's not if what...

Is this pH meter good enough for brewing?

I have the exact same one. It seems pretty stable and accurate on it's first use, but it becomes unstable (and totally inaccurate) as soon as it's submerged in anything. So... almost useless, unless you're willing to calibrate everytime it touches something.

PLEASE let the Northern Brewer buy-out be a hoax!

Interesting article on possible outcomes: http://brulosophy.com/2016/10/20/the-industry-speaks-a-homebrew-shop-owners-thoughts-on-the-acquisition-of-northern-brewer-by-ab-inbev/ Personally, given that it's the "Disruptive Growth" unit, I think that the "market disruption" scenario is the...

    Intro and request for wisdom

First, congratulations! I'd even say the usual "Welcome to the obsession"! I started brewing a little less than a year ago, so, with about 10 batches under my belt, I'm still a newbie. You'll see: your first beers may not (or may) be stellar, but you'll see improvements fast! There's so much to...

    Lagering Steps

I only did one lager so far (an Oktoberfest), and it turned out really good. My best effort so far. I followed Brulosphy's schedule: http://brulosophy.com/methods/lager-method/. I bottled about 2.5 weeks after brewday, and it had no problem carbonating (perfect carbonation in two weeks). It...
