DIY Stainless Immersion or Counterflow chiller?

Ok, the flattening of the outer tube makes a lot more sense. As for the hosing, I've gotta believe some metal braided hosing or something similar would hold up for years with decent care. As for cheaper fittings/parts, Bobby's site Brew Hardware is great Wayne @ Bargain Fittings also carries...

DIY Stainless Immersion or Counterflow chiller?

In the blind follower sense: Chillzilla & Chillus Convolutus do it...so there has to be something advantageous about it...right...??? Making the chiller 20-25' vs chillzillas 12' would double the contact time, wouldn't that make for higher acceptable chilling water temps with full flow...

DIY Stainless Immersion or Counterflow chiller?

I actually stumbled on a HBT user's post the other day that linked me to his build site. It is a copper CFC, but the first build instructions I've seen with copper in copper. He does a decent job of laying out the method. HBT username is P-J Here is his site...

DIY Stainless Immersion or Counterflow chiller?

I have totally been contemplating a Stainless CFC as well! Due to potential clogging issues and future upgradability, I would really like to make one with a 1/2" ID for the wort line. Sadly I have seen NO builds so far do this. Also I lack pretty much any tools to bend stainless so placing...

Virginia Beach water... help me analyze

I apologize for resurrecting an old thread, but i found this thread months ago when searching for water quality in my area & wanted to update my findings for future Norfolk/Va Beach Brewers. The updated link for this "useless" report can be found here...

    Super Simple 15G Plastic Conical

AHHhh, ok...i read that part as a threaded to Barb fitting, was thinking of the ball-lock out side, which they also have on the site: http://www.ruralking.com/adapter-male-thread-1-1-2-1-1-2barb.html Im assuming this is the correct piece...

    Super Simple 15G Plastic Conical

The 1-1/2" FPT means it has threads on the inside of the tank right? How are you attaching the Ball valve with double ended females? http://www.ruralking.com/valve-poly-bolted-virgin-tef-viton.html I always get my threads mixed up!

Question for those who use chest freezers for fermentation

I have effectively rigged mine for both, but not like you are talking about. Essentially I added a collar to the freezer, then drilled holes through the collar and attached 2" PVC and a computer fan from the freezer into an foam insulated "box" next to the freezer. With an ebay temp...

    9" False Bottom Doesn't Fit??

Certaut: With the wiss snips, how would you suggest getting an even cut all the way around. A few wavy cuts around the diameter and im stuck with a false bottom that doesnt sit flush on the bottom. LVBen...the custom false bottoms are $94.95...that's a little out of the budget for me, good...

    9" False Bottom Doesn't Fit??

Just recieved my 9" False Bottom from MoreBeer's site: http://morebeer.com/view_product/15569/102309/Stainless_Steel_False_Bottom_9%22_Diameter Spent about an hour yesterday trying to get it into my Home Depot 5gal Cooler. I assumed based on reviews on HBT that this thing would just...

Fermenting in a corny - problems?

Don't know that I would call it a problem, but...sometimes the lids dont seal completely. I brewed an IPA two weeks ago & 4days into fermenting, was seeing no bubbling from the blow-off valve. I know air-lock activity doesnt mean there is no fermentation, but I was beginning to get a bit...

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

Yes, I think the original goal of constant rousing was similar to that of pressure fermenting a lager, just achieving quicker attenuation and with constant suspension, the yeast are more easily able to clean up all the bad stuff. Reading up a little more on professional brewing techniques, it...

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

Alrighty, that confirms my thinking that the 60psi gauge would be better. I realize that none of these gauges are great at being accurate, but it sounds like this is the best we have to work with. Good to know about the filter housing that sounds like it will work perfectly with that hose...

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

Whew, 3days and 77 pages later I think I feel educated enough to jump into this. House keeping before I get started, Thank you so much to all the contributors, especially wortmonger, not only for starting the thread, but also for sticking with it for the past couple YEARS! The various...

    Non-Dry Hop...Hopping.

Should have just RDWHAHB. Finally got a scale and weighed the second portion of (non-added) hops, turned out to be 1oz. Kegged & tapped now. Nothing to worry about, 1oz of cascade came through for just enough bitterness. No real hop aroma, but that allowed you to really distinguish the...

Taking OG from Cold break wort

Tried to look around a bit for this, with no luck. With a three gallon batch, taking lots of Gravity readings really adds up over time, so in an effort to limit waste heres my question. Usually I try not to rack over the coldbreak & hops left in the bottom of the kettle from cooling. But...
