    Anyone else notice...

I've suffered the consequences of a math error/poor estimation of trub volume displacement when bottling once. Had around 6 extra bottles sanitized just in case. Skip ahead to filling and capping time, quickly burned through those extra 6, had plenty more beer to bottle, and I had already...

    Pumpkin Ale Tragedy

I've done a spiced amber before that called for 3 tablespoons of cinnamon, and on top of that a bunch of cloves and allspice. Tasted amazing. Cinnamon is definitely not as potent as cloves or allspice would be, ie. you're fine.

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

Brewed this up yesterday and I can't wait until the final result. A few notes on how mine ended up/might impart slight changes: Since I could not find pumpkin for the life of me [and that I'd also been toying with the idea], I substituted pumpkin for butternut squash. I baked pre-cut chunks...

    Cracked Erlenmeyer

yep, again, I'm an idiot. I did it on an electric. If i did it again i should have done the double-boil technique as mentioned by M_C. You know what it probably was? it was probably because of all that bacteria that got into the starter because i didn't use the techniques of...

    Cracked Erlenmeyer

good stuff. i think i'll just go ahead and get another. It may be an issue that my LHBS only supplies 'student grade' erlenmeyers, but screw it, we're only arguing about $20 give or take. I may take advantage of my situation and get a higher quality one through the biomedical/chemical...

    Cracked Erlenmeyer

Let me first say that yes, i'm an idiot. I was lazy and decided to boil my DME for a yeast starter in my erlenmeyer on the stovetop. I planned on starting the water bath warm then cool it with ice to avoid shocking (and cracking) the glass. Sure enough, as my starter was going, i noticed a...

Sweet Stout Silver Medal 2012 Chicago Cup - Singing Boys Cream Stout

Brewed this a little over a month ago, and it was (and still is) excellent. Very popular among my friends and those that had it. My mash techniques weren't perfect, so I ended up with a 3.7% ABV product (don't have my OG/FG notes on me). I decided to skip the 2ndary and just bottled after...

So I tried to ferment in the bottling bucket and it's not working as planned

yea, I used to be lazy and ferment in bottling buckets as well without problems, though I didn't have leak problems. As for the leaks, just (lightly) hit yourself over the head and tighten it for next time if possible. Unless it's gushing, don't worry about it too much. Though the lack of...

    Philly Area Home Brew Club?

I grew up in Swarthmore (parents still live there), but I didn't start brewing until I moved to Nashville, so unfortunately I am currently unaware of the local homebrew clubs. I suspect there have to be homebrew 'sleeper cells', if you will, being there is a decent population density in those...
