    Biscuit Flavor

Definitely go with MO in an ESB. My specialty malts are Victory, Biscuit, 45 and 120. The MO really pulls the beer together and anchors all that malty dryness. Edit: Any reason you're going with S-05 for your yeast? I mean, it will still make a tasty beer for sure. Myself who is in no way an...

    ESB Tweak

Someone on Reddit suggested I change up the crystal to something darker. Would I keep the same proportion if I went with 120 as they suggested or leave it the same? Bump

    ESB Tweak

So, I brewed this up a while back. It was pretty dang good, but it was a little thin and I felt it could have used a slightly maltier body. So, this is the tweak: 5.5 Gallon batch OG/FG: 1.059/1.016 Malt: 3.0 lb Maris Otter Pale (UK) 3.0 lb Dry Malt Extract - Extra Light 3.0 lb...

    Mycotoxins in infected beer

So, on the Reddit hombrewing sub recently, someone had a clear infection of some kind. They said they were going for a Berliner and tossed it at the sight of a pellicle. Fine, that's cool, their beer after all. I asked if they had at least tasted it just in case they had caught something yummy...

What came in the mail for you today?

Darkstar2.0 and a chugger pump. My mom also gifted me a 54 qt rectangular igloo cooler. Just need my kettle and one more cooler and I'm set

    Tinkering with an IIPA recipe...thoughts?

I'm putting together my AG set up, so I'm juggling around the idea of doing an IIPA before or after. Eldorado is going in with Nelson and Citra one way or the other. Like I said, I'm not 100% if it'll be my last PM batch or my first AG, but I'm thinking I might do something with a smaller...

    sg too low.

I do partial boils too. To avoid the bad readings from stratification, I aerate first. I figure after 5 minutes of vigorous stirring, a 30 second breather, and 5 more minutes being vigorous with it, it's gotta be mixed. Never had a bad read as far as I can tell. Like others have said...

    Tinkering with an IIPA recipe...thoughts?

Looking good on the updated one. Nelson and Citra ate my go to for DH and WP. I can attest, Nelson/Citra are so freaking good together and your ratio is on point. Let us know how it turns out. FWIW, I'm planning on adding El Dorado to a Nelson Citra ipa since they sound like they mix well, but...

    sour mash?

From what I understand, you do it one of several ways. You would do your normal mash then let it cool to the 100 or so degrees and either pitch lacto or use uncrushed grain and hold it. At this point if you can hold it at 100 for the 1-4 days you would then sparge. If it doesn't hold the...

    Question for parents that brew

Between you 2 and Wil Wheaton, I'm nagging the crap out of my wife about how we need to get a dog.

    Question for parents that brew

No matter how sweet they are, don't steep the baby. Got it.

    Question for parents that brew

Wait. Are they trying to paint you bad because you are a homebrewer? Good luck by the way. Family Court looks like a nightmare, hope it all ends on a good note.

    Question for parents that brew

Glad to see most everyone else makes (or attempts to) brewing a family affair. My mother in law is nice enough the rest of the time. She's very sweet, but at the same time she's square enough to make Huey Lewis second guess himself. My Daughter is very closely supervised while in the kitchen...

    Question for parents that brew

    Question for parents that brew

How old were your children when and if they started helping you? Got into a small argument with my mother in law as she seems to think that brewing has the same inherent dangers as making shine. She's convinced that as one brews, that at some point in the process, your're releasing...

Best Way To Keep Away Fruit Flies

Get revenge. Use the vinegar method. In fact, get a gallon of apple cider, then let a few fruit flies land in it. Make vinegar from them acetobacter the flies natrually carry. Yes. Kill the flies with the flies.

    Honey flavoured beer HELP NEEDED

Like others have said, you can use some honey malt to get a honey-esque flavor into the beer. The honey itself should be treated like any other simple sugar. It will ferment out completely. You could do a braggot like others have suggested. I like darker beer so the braggot I did was based on a...

English Ales - What's your favorite recipe?

Big fan of porters and stouts, but my house beer is an ESB. I like bitter, but Hop bombs are too much. I appreciate them for what they are, but I love being able to get that malt backbone in there as well. Subtle complexity FTW
