    Understanding Calculations for All Grain

I use some of these equations manually and plug in some of the numbers on brewcalcs.com to get other results. Like someone else commented, it's good to do the basics now and then. Not only keeps you understanding the process and identify problem areas but you can check your software for accuracy...

    Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza

Kid mentioned to me one day how she wished we had the stuff to make a deep dish pizza. We make our own from scratch every week and think cardboard pizza is pretty crappy. I had not had a good deep dish also so low and behold I jumped online and ordered the stuff. Here we go. I had bought this Kit...

White floaties resting at the bottom of my pint.

Won't hurt you, might make you burp and fart is about it. I have a problem with uric acid kidney stones which are caused by legumes, poultry, yeast and alcoholic beverages. High uric acid can also cause deposits on your big toe and can be painful. Just drink plenty of water to keep yourself...

    Which Brew Pot?

Trying to decide between kettles. This is my first AG setup, I have a 10gal commercial grade Igloo mash tun, Rubbermaid HLT, and I'm trying to decide the best option for my main boil kettle. Price is not as big of deciding factor as quality. I don't like putting money into stuff that is "good...

    Norwegian Delicy: Spitchmur

It's pretty tough to chew Beef natural intestinal casing though sheep and pork casing are pretty much edible, beef is much thicker. Soon as you put it in your mouth it starts to rehydrate and winds up being like meat flavored chewing gum. Not real appetizing though we wouldn't mind it to much...

    Norwegian Delicy: Spitchmur

Anyone ever tried this stuff before. Grew up with it as a kid, families would get together and make this and lefse in the winter. Main ingredients would be lean ground beer, all spice, onion, sale peter, and a few other secret spices. It would then be stuffed into a beef casing, air pockets...

German Pils Cat's **** "Bitburger" - Premium Pilsner

I was stationed in the Bitburg Germany area and the locals loved this brew and making cola-beir from it in the pubs. Basically a shot of cola in a mug and pour the beer second.

New way to control Pellet Hop gunk!

Got mine today. Brown clowns smashed one end of the box and creased the mesh on mine. It will still work though.

Just ordered the stuff to make this swill last night. Place I ordered from have the 5gal PET Carboy for 25% off. Not the "Better bottle" brand but I couldn't say no to that and their shipping costs. http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?products_id=12929

    Igloo Vs. Rubbermaid thermal test.

Thanks! Figured it would be a cake class to finish my Public Health minor but has been one of my more demanding classes. Funny you should mention your a chemist. I have five professors teaching this class and they all brew at home, couple of them for over 30yrs each. Three are biochemists, one...

For those who like Wine, The band Tool and Arizona

Thought I would share this for the wine makers here who happen to like tool, making wine and Arizona. Pretty interesting really. Rockstar builds vineyard and then pretty much just does the rock star thing when the vineyard needs money for expansion etc. The Documentary "Blood into Wine- The...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

My god this site is evil. Going through a brewing course and just got into brewing and came over here to share a link when I found this thread. I have not had this stuff since I was stationed in Germany 92-94 and hit the Apfelwein Fest in Trier GE. Street vendor near the Roman Aqueduct gave us a...

    Off flavor

Yeah, I thought it was his post boil reading until I reread it and saw he did not take his post boil gravity reading. Figured 1.005, there's no sugar for the yeast to produce alcohol but that would probably be a way awful beer aside from the formaldehyde taste.

    Off flavor

I don't think it's Tannins since you have to get to 170+ to get into them. Even if you cross over that threshold a few degrees you would taste a tartness or maybe plastic taste if you got too much. At 158 that is a great temp to be at to get alpha and beta amylase sugars out of the grain and...

    Igloo Vs. Rubbermaid thermal test.

Fatcity, I'm analyzing what need as this is my initial setup for home. As stated above I have been involved in a brewing course. It is very intensive with chemistry, biology, physics, history etc. While I am in the class 8hrs a week I am putting in nearly another 20hrs of study time outside of...
