    Kingston Ontario?

The stuff I do get in Kingston I get from Homecraft. I have taken to ordering my grain online I got a 55 lb bag of two row for $40 +$20 shipping from Mashingheads down in London.

So I brewed with 100% Lake Superior water..

The zebra mussels have cleaned up lake Ontario pretty good. Also if you are in Kingston you are already brewing with lake Ontario water ;). I took a tour of the Kingston water plant and they mentioned that they need to do very little to the water most times of the year. I have lived near the...

    where to get starsan

I have never seen starsan at any of the Kingston homebrew stores. HomeCraft on in the bayridge plaza has Idophor. Which is also an effective no rinse sanitiser. Kingston kinda sucks when it comes to homebrew supplies....

Greetings, I live just outside of Kingston in Amhurstview. I have been a kit brewer for years and just made the leap into AG this year. Richard

Ball lock quick disconnect (liquid side) No worky!

I have some older single handle corny kegs that have posts that seem to be liquid out posts (no notches) but they are the same size as the gas out posts. I just use a spare gas ( gray ) quick-connect instead of the black one for these kegs. My theory is that at one time the kegs were produced...

First AG - BIAB - 10 gal oatmeal stout - Feedback please

For my first batch I didn't. I have an low density immersion element and I did short test to see if it would melt/scorch the bag. The test showed no effect on the bag material so I felt I was safe. Unfortunately it seems the tip of the element gets hotter than the rest and I had a small hole...

First AG - BIAB - 10 gal oatmeal stout - Feedback please

With no sparge and topping up the boil just under 1 gal I ended up with an OG of 1.054 which is right on the money according to Brewtarget. I ended with 10 gal finished wort this gives me a Brewhouse efficiency of 70%. I'm happy with that for a first go.

First major fail! Advice needed (cooling wort before boil)

And a learning experience it is. It seems that the hole in the bag was caused by the element. I guess when I tested the fabric yesterday I just did not hold it long enough. Next time I'll make some sort of cover for the element (wire cake rack or something.) I also think I will stir the mash a...

First major fail! Advice needed (cooling wort before boil)

THat was what I was thinking of doing. Draining the wort into the two buckets I have ready for the fermenter fermentation. Well live and learn.

First major fail! Advice needed (cooling wort before boil)

THank you for all your help with this Yooper. I don't seem to have to much grain in the wort there is a nice 1/8 in layer of husks floating at the top and there feels like there my be about a layer of grain about 1/2 inch thick on the bottom. Should I worry about filtering it now? If I...

First major fail! Advice needed (cooling wort before boil)

First major fail! I am doing a BIAB and when I was draining the bag I noticed that I has a lot of grain in the wort! It looks like the bag snagged on something as there is a inch sized hole at the bottom of the bag. Most likely the thermometer probe It looks like I may have to drain the...

Just started my first mash! BIAB 10 gal!

First major fail! It looks like the bag snagged on something. Most likely the thermometer probe It looks like I may have to drain the keggle and filter the wort through something. I may snag one of SWMBO's nylons and tie it over the drain. Should I cool the wort first to avoid "hot aeration" ?

Just started my first mash! BIAB 10 gal!

Another note to self Don't use a cheap plastic rope for lifting the mash. They don't hold knots and slip through your hands if they are at all wet. I had forgotten about he rope for mu pully system and grabe the first bit of rope I found, It was the floating line from my canoeing kit. I trhink...

Just started my first mash! BIAB 10 gal!

First possible whoopsie It was taking a while to bring the temp up to mashout and I was still a little worried about burning the bag on the element. So i decided to lift the bag away from the element. While doing so it seems that I did not gather the whole top of the bag and I spilled some of...

Just started my first mash! BIAB 10 gal!

50 min into the mash and the temp has not moved! :rockin: I put a pizza pan on for a lid and wraped the keggle in a towel. Time to grab a cup-o-Joe before I mash out

Just started my first mash! BIAB 10 gal!

Just started my first mash! I am sitting at the max capacity of my keggle. It was a bit of a squeeze getting 23 lb of grain as well as 12 gal of water into my keggle but it fit(less than an inch to spare!) I under shot the temp by five degrees but it was simple enough to turn the heat on and...

First AG - BIAB - 10 gal oatmeal stout - Feedback please

Just started my mash! I am sitting at the max capacity of my keggle. (this means my 23 lb of grain takes up 3 gal in the mash) I under shot the temp by five degrees but it was simple enough to turn the heat on and raise the temp. Richard

First AG - BIAB - 10 gal oatmeal stout - Feedback please

I have cut the amount of crystal to 10% of the grain bill. I don't have lactose and don't know where I would get some so I will leave that as a note to try another time. As for the efficiency I can see where you are coming from I have 23 lb of grain @ .1 gal/lb that would be 2.3 gallons of...
