    Measuring Fermentable Sugar in Wort?

Mashed at 143 for 90 min. Used two vials of WL565 in 3 liter starter on a stir plate for 2 days prior. Pitched at 75 degrees. ETC raised temp to 82 and held. All signe lead me to yeast problems, which is fine, I just want to know for sure by measuring the sugars. Which is why I asked if...

    Measuring Fermentable Sugar in Wort?

I am trying to find out there is a simple way to measure the levels of fermentable sugar in my wort. No I'm not talking about using a hydrometer or refractometer to measure the total sugar, I'm only interested in the fermentable sugar (e.g. maltose, sucrose, fructose, glucose, galactose ...)...

Brewing small batches in a large fermenter?

I'm debating the purchase of my second fermetor and would appreciate some input from the many experts on the forum. I currently brew 10 gallon batches and use one conical fementer. I would like to buy another but I am unsure what size to get. I know someday (maybe soon) I will move to 20...

    Hydrometer or Refractometer

Yep that makes tons of sense. What about promashes conversion for refrectometer readings during fermentation? Do you consider it to be accurate (i.e. can I rely on it, or should I just stick with my hydrometer)? My guess is that it can adjust based on the amount of alchohol in the sample...

    Hydrometer or Refractometer

I was just wondering what peoples experiences have been with refractometers. Worth the price? I recently purchased a refractometer (from northern brewer) so that I can take more readings and use less beer, but I have found that it contradicts my hydrometer. My current beer reads 1.030 on the...

What went wrong? FG too high!

The room has been consitently 70-75, but I have no idea what the beer is at. I have a thermowell stopper, thermawrap and ETC comming so I can control it better, but it may be too little too late.

What went wrong? FG too high!

We arated with oxygen during the transfer to the fermentor, but we probbaly didn't do nearly enough (5-10 mins). Also, consider that is dropped 40 points in the first five days (1.090 - 1.050) but since then (almost 4 weeks) it has only dopped 20 more points to 1.030. Any suggestion as to...

What went wrong? FG too high!

I am the friend that Steve973 brewed with. We did not check the PH of the water, but we did add Buffer 5.2 to the strike and sparge water. As of 2/17/06 the gravity is only at 1.030 and bubbles are occuring every 20-30 seconds. We were hoping for a gravity of around 1.010 but its been...
