How Can You Tell whether Steeping or Partial Mash is Required?

Why is honey malt have the "mash required" box checked? Isn't it a specialty grain. I've seen it in kits before and its under the specialty grain category at Midwest Supplies.

How Can You Tell whether Steeping or Partial Mash is Required?

I've been wondering about this and couldn't quite find an answer. How does one know whether or not grains require a partial mash or not when looking at them at homebrew stores? Browsing Midwest Supplies website is what caused me to wonder this.

    A Few Water Volume Questions

What do you mean "drain off the wort?" I'll just be steeping it in the two gallons and then in the one gallon, correct? Why would this result in less hop utilization then just steeping the grain in three gallons of water? I'm thinking I'll just use 3.5-4 gallons in one pot to save myself...

    A Few Water Volume Questions

I have a few noobish questions for you: So I have 5G kettle and an extract kit with specialty grains intended for 5 gallons. Obviously I won't be able to 5 full gallons into the pot, I'm thinking I'll probably start with 4ish gallons in hopes that it won't boil over. Is this about the correct...

    SWMBO complaining of smell......

I actually don't like the smell of brewing either. Fortunately, the apartment I live in has a very large Indian community who are always making very pungent food so I'm thinking anyone near me will be able to drown out the smell.

Just got my first Homebrew kit (MN)

Hi everyone, for my birthday/Christmas I got a really nice Homebrew kit from my family. I think I'm going to brew my first batch from a kit next weekend, a Simcoe IPA. I'll let you all know how it goes. I hope to eventually move on to all-grain and make my own recipes and all that. :mug:
