    Growing Hops in Central Florida

While I was supposed to receive the rhizomes a couple of days ago the post office seems to have lost them. I don't know how long rhizomes will last in the mail. Anybody have any ideas? Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Growing Hops in Central Florida

The hop rhizomes should arrive today. Yesterday I did some work preparing the ground. Initially I had done most of the research and thought about using pots. However, the best I could find in the right size (20" or more) was pretty expensive. So, using a different method that I read about I am...

    Growing Hops in Central Florida

Thanks for the input. Right now I'm definitely planting on putting in pots. I downloaded a PDF on hop planting in Florida which I think will be helpful. I will definitely try to keep this thread posted with pictures. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Growing Hops in Central Florida

I ordered the rhizomes from NorthwestHops.com - no specific reason I chose them over another company, just did a google search and they seemed to have good pricing and reviews. Keep me updated if you go for it - I'll do the same. :-) All the best, Phil

    Growing Hops in Central Florida

Well, I'm thinking that the lack of response means I may be one of the few to try growing HOPS in Florida. Still, I'm going to give it a go. Here's what I know: A) Florida is not OPTIMAL for growing hops, but allegedly it can be done B) Crop yields will be lower, plants need more care C)...

    Growing Hops in Central Florida

I've seen a few posts on this topic with the thread, however, most are more than a couple years old. I've heard all kinds of opinions on the topic of whether hops can be grown in Florida, etc. I called FreshHops.com and they basically told me "don't bother." However, seems like some people have...

    My $20 Water Filter...Brew for less $

Flow is not as fast as a garden hose (obviously) but much, much better than the fridge. I would say it would take about 5 minutes to fill up a 5 gallon carboy if not less time. Phil

    My $20 Water Filter...Brew for less $

AHA! Had I known of one of those I probably would have bought it. I suppose my is sort of a cobbled-together version of that.

    My $20 Water Filter...Brew for less $

Maybe someone will find this interesting... I've been brewing for about 10 months and have probably done about 6-7 batches. I realized quickly that because my tap water tastes horrible that I would have to buy spring water from the grocery store at about $1 per gallon. Since I'm looking for...

    Cleaning bottles and storage

Agreed as well! The big thing I learned is to rinse the bottles carefully after done using them. Shake the water out and put them in storage for later. Then all that's needed his starSan, rinse and fill.

My First 'Nut Brown Ale Recipe' Any Suggestions

Thanks for your reply. Great advice. I'm tinkering with the recipe now and am seeing that when changing from DARK LME to LIGHT LME the color calculator hasn't changed. I also changed the Brown Sugar content and the Dark Chocolate Malt to Regular Chocolate. I'm definitely looking for a nice...

My First 'Nut Brown Ale Recipe' Any Suggestions

Hi all - been brewing for about 9 months and have about 7 batches under my belt so far. Each time they get better and better. So far I have mostly brewed kits but I would like to try my hand at creating a nice NUT BROWN ALE recipe on my own. I've done quite a bit of research, cobbled items from...

Missed OG, Should I fix it? Pumpkin Ale

Demus, That's interesting. I would have thought that the 3 minutes of rocking the carboy back and forth would have shaken the contents well enough. You're saying to move the wort between buckets to get a full mix? Sounds like a huge mess but I'll try it next time. :)

Missed OG, Should I fix it? Pumpkin Ale

Yes, I think so. I shook the heck out of it to aerate it just before pitching the yeast. It's was definitely good and mixed before I used the thief to get grab some wort for hydrometer reading.

Missed OG, Should I fix it? Pumpkin Ale

This is my 5th batch and one that I (more or less) concocted my own recipe to make. Using the BrewersFriend.com web site it's supposed to have an OG of 1.045 for 5.5 gallon batch but I only could get it to 1.040. Is that too big of a gap to deal with? If so, is there anyway to fix it? I just put...

First Batch - metallic citrusy flavor?

I followed your link and the "Acetaldehyde" description almost perfectly fits what I was tasting. It was sort of citrusy but really kind of a "tart" flavor - like a metallic or green apple flavor. I'll keep conditioning for another week and drop an update out there. Thanks again for your input!

First Batch - metallic citrusy flavor?

I'm a newbie. Looking for some advice here. Thanks all for checking this thread out. I just bought the True Brew kit complete with carboy fermenter and a bunch of accessories from my local home brew shop. I also bought an "American Wheat" extract kit to try my inaugural brew. I used...
