Going on vacation - too long for primary?

Doh! Revvy has a sticky post about this? Could you link me, I can't seem to find it :/ Don't I feel like a dunce. About having a vigorous fermentation and having the lid blow off....I would dread that. I haven't had it happen yet with my setup 6.5gal carboy and I'm also not brewing a big...

Going on vacation - too long for primary?

Hey guys, I've asked a question like this in the past, but then it was a question about leaving in the secondary. Today I'm asking about leaving it in the primary. I wouldn't have worried about this if I hadn't just been reading The Complete Joy and came across a part that said that I should...

Introducing a friend to brewing - Any tips?

Good thread. I have a friend coming over next week to check out a brew session to see if she wants to get into it as well. Great tips.

DIY Ferm Chamber vs Temp Control Fridge

Thanks, yeah it says it drops it 4 degrees when it hits the target temp then shuts off. So its not spot on. Well that's a great point :) Thanks a lot!

DIY Ferm Chamber vs Temp Control Fridge

Hey guys, well summer is already starting to get rolling here and I don't want to stop brewing just because I don't want to pay to air condition my entire house at fermentation temps. I have a side by side freezer/fridge in my garage that has overflow from the main fridge, but I can easily...

Easy Partial Mash Brewing (with pics)

Back reviewing the guide for my next beer...such a great guide! I just ordered a new 60qt brew kettle (In preparation for full boils and double batches). This may be a dumb questions, but is that pot going to be too large for this method to boil in? I would still do my mash in the smaller 5 gal...

    AHS Sale in Virginia!

The 60 quart has been order along with a mini-mash of their West Coast Pale. So excited! Thanks for the feedback!

    AHS Sale in Virginia!

Finally the sale comes to VA! So, I'm looking at getting a larger brew pot - can't spend as much as the deluxe Boilermakers. But, I am looking at the super brew pots: Austin Homebrew Supply which I could drill and outfit as I see fit as I get further. But I can't decide - should I get the...

$150 Gift Cert - What to Buy?

Got em! As far as a grain crusher, I'm probably not serious enough JUST yet - looking to get the basic all grain equip first. Thinking I can easily make a MLT...so its sounding like a chiller and a pot are what I should be looking at.

$150 Gift Cert - What to Buy?

Sales for the states! I hadn't even seen that AND they haven't done my state yet! Great Tip! I have been thinking about doing Better Bottles as well. But I really want to get a bigger pot - what are the thoughts on the SUPER swanky BoilerMaker vs. an Economy SS? Should I use the gift cert to...

$150 Gift Cert - What to Buy?

Alright guys, its been a while since I've had much time at all to put into brewing or even thinking about brewing. But, I'm excited to say that I now have some down time and I'm jumping back in. So the question: I have a $150 gift certificate to Austin Home brew and I want to know what the...

Im worse than a kid Christmas morning. Thank you for your patience with me!

Hah! I feel the exact same way. I have just started (7 batches in) and when I can't brew (due to lack of equipment which is due to the economy) I'm reading these forums, listening/watching The Jamil Show, Brew Strong, or Basic Brewing, drooling over conical fermenters/wort...

    Bottle Sterilization

For my last batch I picked up one of the bottle trees with the Vinator attachment. Spray the tree down with starsan. Filly the Vinator with Star san. I gave the bottles an oxyclean soaking the day before and a good rinse. After that I gave each bottle a couple squirts from the vinator and hung...

19 or 30 Days In Fermenters?

Thanks guys. Seems that no one is weighing in saying that it would hurt the beer to leave it in the fermenters longer and i'm a pretty patient guy, so I think I'll just let it be in the primary for longer and put it over to the secondary before leaving and bottle when I get back. What kind of...

    should i dry hop?

Very interesting. I have an Irish Red and might twist the recipe a bit by dry hopping some cascade because of this thread. The smell of cascade is pretty much heavenly imo. Never dry hopped before, anything special i need to do with the hops to sanitize them? or just sanitize my hands, the bag...

19 or 30 Days In Fermenters?

Its right in there (1.051) I'm pretty sure fermentation will be complete in the 19 Day deadline. I don't mind leaving my beer in bottles longer to bottle condition. I'm wondering if I get something more/better in the beer if i condition in the primaries for longer rather than the bottles for...

19 or 30 Days In Fermenters?

Kinda a scheduling question more than anything. I made a mini-mash AHS Red kit Nov 27. I'll be going out of town for a week and a half before Christmas to do the family thing. Option 1: 19 Days Before Bottling: I have just enough time to do 7 Days in the primary and 12 Days in the...

    Double Pitching...

Oh Ok. So for beers in the 1.052ish range it should be fine?

    Double Pitching...

huh, really? I have been using White Labs Liquid Yeast without a starter for the past few batches. Just been shaking the tube and dumping it. Fermentation usually takes off within the day. And the beers have fermented down to the expected FGs. Am I missing something?
