Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Brewed this for the second time on Monday. This time I went 3 pounds two row, 3 pounds pilsner, 1.75 pounds maize, .75 pounds rice and a half pound sugar. Also went with 1 oz of crystal only, so it will be a bit under hopped. It is fermenting away with s05. The first batch was great, hopefully...

    BeerSmith 2.0

Yikes, I'm quite disappointed in version 2. The GUI follows no standards and the ribbon bar is not used according to accepted usability guidelines. The dev should read up the Microsoft Fluent User Interface guidelines and follow them. Some of the biggest issues from the first version still...

    Orange / Coriander Pale Ale

It took me about 9 valencia oranges for 2.5oz of zest. This was for an orange brown ale and boiled 5 minutes.

Recipe Help - Brown Ale (Perhaps w/ fruit)

Thanks for the comments! I brewed this yesterday and everything went well. I think I am going to forgo adding fruit and see how this one turns out. I did add some fresh orange zest (my wife graciously helped and zested about 2.5oz) and it added some nice aroma. The OG is 1.050 and the color is...

Recipe Help - Brown Ale (Perhaps w/ fruit)

Up until now I've done only minor tinkering of recipes but I'd like to start creating my own recipes from scratch. I was going to just go for it today and see what happens, but wasn't able to brew today so I will ask for some advice for tweaking the recipe. I'm looking for a lower hopped...

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Mine has been carbing for about a week and a half and is crystal clear (cold crashed w/ gelatin for a few days). The only problem I have with it is the color. It is extremely light yellow, rather than the gold I was looking for. My OG was right on. I did go with more rice than was called for...

What is my best bet to reduce tannins?

Take a gravity reading of your 2nd batch sparge. 1.010 is the typical minimum gravity you want to see. My last batch was og 1.044, and my second batch sparge was 1.012. This is a relatively low gravity beer, and I sparged enough for a 90 minute boil, so generally speaking you should be ok with...

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

I made this yesterday. Halved the recipe and used a pound of rice instead of a half. Also I used half ounce of cascade in lieu of crystal which I didn't have. Only mistake was that I added too much water at the start of the boil as I haven't done a long boil before of 90 minutes (didn't want to...

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

I am planning on brewing this tomorrow. I plan to use: 6# 2-row 2# Flaked Corn 0.5# Flaked Rice So I'm just dividing the original in half to come up with 5.5 gallon batch. Should I scale this down any differently? Also, I batch sparge and do the double sparge method. I plan to do a 90 minute...

    Show us your Kegerator

Hi, here is our just finished keezer build. Our goal was to as taps to the bar and have it look clean so we went for a window in the wall style. When pushed up to the wall it looks built in practically so we are quite pleased! (apologies if the pics are huge. I am sending this from the android...

    Incorrect volumetrics /facepalm

Reminds me of my first batch. My fermenter was from a Coopers kit and had gallons marked off, but they were Imperial gallons, not US gallons. At any rate, it did end up a bit diluted, but at the end of the day it was still beer and got me hooked on homebrewing.

    Wort Chilling Question

To answer the original question - yes 50' of copper will be able to cool 15 gallons of wort. The biggest factors in time are how much you are circulating the wort, the length of copper, and the input temperature of your water. You may see small differences by adjusting the tube diameter and...

    Irish Stout Ó Flannagáin Standard

Brewed this one yesterday. Only modification was I used 1.5oz of 4.7% hops and mashed @ 157. Efficiency was a bit high on this one so I ended up with a bit higher gravity than I planned for (came in at 1.051). Hydro sample showed great promise so can't wait for this one to finish. It's...

    Freeze mash runnings?

Recently making significant amounts of baby food and freezing it in ice cube trays got me thinking... I have no real interest in doing this as I think it would be a waste of time, but wondering about its viability. Would it be possible to do a mash, then collect and then freeze the runnings...

Is it OK to let the WORT REST??!!

I used to boil on the stovetop and it was a continuous struggle to get even 2-3 gallons at a decent boil - not to mention boilovers in the kitchen can be a huge mess as compared to boilovers in the garage or on the deck. Once I got a keggle and a SH140L burner my homebrew life made a tremendous...

Keg Pressures and Beer Line Info

Don't you also need to account for pressure loss at the tap and shank? Additionally, if done as above, doesn't that leave no dispensing pressure? I've seen desired dispensing pressures from anywhere between 1psi and 5psi. I'm trying to get this all sorted out in my head, as I'm kegging for the...

    Potential oversparge?

Today I did an AG stout with 9.25# grain, mashed @ 157 with 3 gallons. I batch sparge with a converted 5 gallon cooler, I did 2 sparges, each 2.75gallons. The first sparge was 168 and the second sparge ended up being being 166. I ended up collecting 7 gallons and getting about 5.5 gallons...
