    Question about brewing with extract???

Without a wort chiller I'd hate to do a full 5 gallons. I did 3.5 for my first brew and it took ~40 minutes to chill in my sink (switching from side to side with ice baths).

    SG or Balling?

Which measurement do you use for calculating your %ABV? I just checked my brew 7 days into Primary and got 1.014 S.G. and 3.0 Plato. Calculating using both, I get slightly different answers: (1.042-1.014) x (131)= 3.7% ABV (10.5-3.0) x (0.42)= 3.15 (x1.25) = 3.9% ABV 0.2% seems like a big...

    Using Cooper's Carb Drops

Thanks Shooter, I've heard the same thing. Munton's apparently leaves particulate matter in the beer that can float on the top, so it's not even something you could leave in the bottle with a proper pour.

    Using Cooper's Carb Drops

Excellent! This seems so much easier. Now, to go blow more money on brewing equipment. :mug:

    Using Cooper's Carb Drops

I was going to buy a bottling bucket this week, but then I came across these tablets (someone I know who brews loves them). Now my plan is, rather than spend my money on a bottling bucket, I can spend it on a secondary carboy! If I'm thinking correctly, I can bottle straight from my...

    7.9 gallon primary to big?

My primary is 8 gallons and from what everyone told me here, it's fine since your CO2 will cover the head space. Secondary is a different issue though, you should have the secondary have as little head space as possible I believe.

    Checking SG In Primary

Alright, I'll just relax, thanks for the advice.

    Checking SG In Primary

I brewed my first batch on 4/27 and now it seems that signs of active fermentation have stopped (there's no active bubbling in the airlock). I was thinking of checking the specific gravity to see how far it has fallen, but then remembered the protective layer of CO2 over my beer. If I take the...

What size brew pot should I buy?

I just did my first batch on my electric stove top and use a 5 gallon pot. I boiled a little over 3 gallons to make my wort. Also, it took about 40 minutes to reach a boil.

    My first WORT! =-)

Just curious, are you using a different scale than I am, or did you mean to type 1.060 (rather than 1.60).

    Yet another newb

Welcome! I brewed my first batch today, and am already planning on when I can buy my next carboy and wort chiller... This site is a great resource, so stick around! Out of curiosity, what gun forum? I shoot AR-15 competitively (both NRA and CMP competititions).

    First Brew Day Tomorrow...

Thanks kingmatt, the more I thought it about it I was worried some of the yeast cells may have stuck to the lid or sides of the bucket above the wort. At this point, I'm just checking on it every 30 minutes or so because I can't wait to see a bubble come through the airlock. I know it can take...

    First Brew Day Tomorrow...

Okay, I made it through! WOW, what a great time, now my apartment smells of heavenly grains and hops haha. I ended up having to use a gallon of tap water (more boiled off than I expected). I have a question about how I did the aeration and the pitching of the yeast though. I followed the...

    First Brew Day Tomorrow...

Thanks for the info everyone, today is the day! I decided to use the Spring Water simply because I hadn't checked with my water provider on the contents of my tap water yet. My last question (for now) before getting started is, do I need to strain the wort going into my primary? It will...

    First Brew Day Tomorrow...

Alright thanks. I'm also looking for a mixing ratio for my StarSan. I was just going to mix the right amount in my 8oz spray bottle and just spray everything and let it sanitize for a few minutes.

    First Brew Day Tomorrow...

Okay so to play it safe I bought 2 gallons of water from the grocery store to use in my primary. However, there were 3 different kinds and I didn't know what to get! -Distilled Water -Drinking Water -Spring Water I went with the Spring Water, but was pulled towards the Distilled...

    First Brew Day Tomorrow...

Thanks for the responses. I don't have tap water concerns as I do drink water from the tap, I had simply read that it was safest to boil any water you were going to top your wort off with to avoid infection. Also, I wouldn't be topping the wort with boiling water. I would have the (previously...

    First Brew Day Tomorrow...

So after thinking about my pot size and water situation, here is what I plan on doing for my first brew, please let me know what you would do differently or if there are any major mistakes: -Tonight, I will boil ~3 gallons of water for a while and then add it to my (sanitized) plastic bucket...

    Bottling Bucket

What a great idea about doing it over the open dishwasher door! That'll work perfect. One of my worries with the spigot just what someone mentioned (leakage and/or trub getting in it or clogging it).

    Bottling Bucket

Okay, so you got the bucket that has a spigot, then you attach the tubing to the spigot, then the tubing to the bottle filler tool. Is that your setup?
