Who is your LHBS here in CT?

FYI - If you join the CTBeertrail Trail Blazers club, you can get 10% off at a few of the CT homebrew stores as well as a some bars and restaurants! It definitely helps to make the CT LHBS' more competitive.

Consistently (really) low efficiency, here's my notes.

I think these two settings are killing you. Lauter Tun Deadspace - From what I've read, this really is only for people who used false bottoms a have water left in the cooler/kettle when they drain the mash/sparge water. I usually have mine set to zero. Loss to Trub and Chiller - Sounds...

    First recipe feedback (IPA)

Agreed. Maybe move the 30 minute Simcoe addition to 15 minutes.

Commercial beers that let you down?

Just had a Green Flash West Coast IPA and was quite a bit disappointed. I don't know if it's a lupulin threshold shift from all the DIPA's I've had recently, but I had this and an Ithaca Flower Power IPA back to back, and the Flower Power whooped its butt in aroma and taste. I found the Green...

Who is your LHBS here in CT?

I live in the central CT area and if I need anything in a pinch or onesie twosie items, I'll hit up Brew & Wine. Unfortunately for me, like JohnnyO, the LHBS around here is $10-$50 more an order after shipping costs depending on how much I buy. Since I'm doing a bunch of one gallon batches, it...

Immersion Chiller build experience (3/8 vs 1/2)

Woops nevermind...didn't see the post date

what would you brew with this?

Since you like IPA's, you should throw all them malts in a mash and then boil it with a buncha hops, and based on whatever color it comes out, call it a <insert final color here> IPA :tank:

Consistently (really) low efficiency, here's my notes.

I did a one gallon batch today with 2.25 oz of hops and only lost .2 gal from post boil to the fermenter (we're talking batch sizes so fermenter loss doesn't come into play just yet). .89 gal seems like a lot of loss for only an ounce of hops. He could lose all the wort to post boil trub he...

Surly Furious Extract kit IBU question

What do you mean by "upping the IBU's"? As in adding more hops to the boil? If so, I wouldn't do that. You're going from a 2.5 gal boil to a 5 gal boil; your hop utilization is going to go through the roof, and I garuntee you'll end up with way more than 99 IBUs (probably low to mid 100's)...

The Online Homebrew Supplier Comparison Thread

Lots of love around here for Farmhouse. My most recent purchase was from them. I make hoppy beers, and they are bar none the best price for hops. They're one of the only places I've seen not price gouge when they get stock of high demand hops like simcoe and citra.

Consistently (really) low efficiency, here's my notes.

I didn't see anything about a pre-boil gravity measurement. Next time, take a gravity reading before you start your boil and compare it to what BeerSmith calculates and see if there are any discrepancies. Here's why: I don't think it's a mash problem. You're boiling down 4.14 gallons to 3.64...

I have to blow off some steam

Wow sounds like I got lucky. I was driving through from CT to MI and randomly picked one place I could see from the highway to stop looking for the nectar on a whim

    Summit hop experiences?

For real. I'm having it right now...glad I only bought just one can. Also glad I decided to do a Columbus SMaSH instead of Summit for my next brew. Definitely not giving up on Summit though.

I have to blow off some steam

You sure? I was driving through Wilkes-Barre a few weeks ago and picked up a couple six packs of Nugget Nectar at Wegmans. They also sell it at gas stations! That's nothing compared to Connecticut. No sales past 9 PM (used to be 8 PM, and some stores still abide by it), and no sales at all on...

Commercial beers that let you down?

Here's a recent list: Stone Cali-Belgique (Don't think the flavors blended well) Jolly Pumpkin Bam Bière (Tastes like water with a little bit of beer flavor) Saison Dupont (Just not a lot of flavor compared to other Saisons) Arcadia Hopmouth DIPA (Did they forget to hop this thing??) Bear...

    Electrical Primer for Brewers

LOL that was my initial thought. But then I read this primer and thought "I brew on an electric stove, why would anyone need all this information to do that?"

I feel like this primer is missing a very key component: What the heck is electric brewing?

    MO/Columbus SMaSH IPA: Hop schedule?

Here's my rediculous MO/Columbus SMaSH! Keep in mind, this will not be well balanced - I'm going for Pliny the Elder hoppy-ness Name of Brew: SMaSH Columbus IPA - 1 Gallon BIAB Entry Category: Imperial IPA Type: All Grain Category Number: 14 Subcategory Letter: C Starting Gravity: 1.086...

    MO/Columbus SMaSH IPA: Hop schedule?

LOL I'm doing a MO/Columbus SMaSH IPA this weekend and using 3 oz of Columbus in a ONE gallon batch! (That includes dry hop though). I can post my hop schedule when I get home.
