    TAP draft system

I am ordering the tap a draft system this weekend. (EDIT: ordered today from Midwest.) I do not have the space for kegs, but I want a way to branch out beyond bottles. My plan is to split batches between bottles (to keep for a while) and the TAD (to drink sooner). This will give me a quantity...

    tubing from lowes

In the commercial world, its an insurance issue. If something does go wrong, we can fall back on our supplier if they rated it as food grade, but if they did not and we used it for food/beverage, they can say we were operating outside of specifications... This is not to say that there are...

    Removing labels from beer bottles.

Soak in a sink full of OxyClean and hot water, peel labels off, scrub any remaining residue, rinse well.

Anyone use the disposable oxygen tanks for aerating?

Great... now I have something else that i really want to buy... :p That is an awesome piece of kit.

    Alcohol purchase waiver?

As soon as the clerk attempts to record my info, it goes from being a legal age verification check to a (potentially illegal) privacy violation. If you paid via credit card, it is a violation of PCI guidelines to collect and store information like that. In many locations requiring you to...

    Cold break

Kind of. It doesn't absorb the yeast, but rather the negative charged particles attract the positive charged particles forming larger particles which drop out of solution faster. It really does work amazingly well, and can be used in conjunction with cold crashing. I add warm gelatin...

Garden hose water... how bad is it?

If it tastes good, brew with it. If it doesn't work out, don't do it again.

    Ice Block Wort Chiller

I actually use the similar method of freezing a 2 liter bottle full of water. When its time to cool my wort, I pull the bottle out of the freezer, dunk it in the bucket of sanitizer, and then drop it in the wort. It is a risk of infection, but if you are reasonably careful (clean it well...

    Gelatin hardened

You got it too hot. If you get gelatin that hot you make jello :) Boil the water (thus killing any nasties in it), let it cool a bit, stir in the gelatin, let it bloom 10 mins or so, stir, add it to your beer. No need to stir it into the beer, just pour it in and let it alone for a couple...

Bubbles on a second test sample?

Bubbles are just CO2 being released -perfectly normal.

Favorite place to buy extract kits?

I've been buying from Midwest Supplies, NorthernBrewer, and MoreBeer. Midwest has noticeably cheaper prices than NB, but higher shipping charges -so far it comes out about even for me (shipping to CA). MoreBeer is local, so I just pick stuff up in-store, but their prices are significantly...

    Good beer mug

I have a stack of pint glasses that work well for everyday drinking with friends, pilsner glasses for showing off a pretty beer, weizen glasses for when I want a head on a beer, a pub glass, one of the glycerin-filled plastic jobs for drinking by the pool, and six Tiffany&co cut-crystal beer...

Bayou Classic 44-QT Stainless Steel Stockpot w/spigot

I was looking at that myself this morning... My concern with it was the placement of the spigot. In the pictures it looks like the spigot extends down past the bottom of the pot -meaning that when I set it down in the sink/on the stove/in the cabinet it might be resting on the spigot and...

Pliny clone - More Beer vs. AHS?

I say get the MoreBeer kit... but that's just because they are my local store, and I'd like to see them thrive.

    Conditioning storage ideas!??!

WOW. That is the best use of a filing cabinet I have ever seen... I think I will copy the milk crate idea myself as I have several already.

    transferring to secondary question

Quick suggestion: Buy another bucket to use as a primary fermenter. The bucket with spigot is your bottling bucket, and you will really want it empty when you get ready to bottle your beer.

    thermometer suggestions

Get a long dial thermometer... they work great. Midwest Supplies has the exact one I bought at my local shop for less than half what I paid... of course I didn't want to wait.

want to add coffee grounds to boil

Thanks for the info. One beer I am looking forward to making is a coffee porter of a coffee stout (not sure which yet...) I will try your combo idea when I make it.

    Most frustrating hobby ever?

While it is true that lowering the PH with vinegar will increase the oxidizing power of the bleach (by producing more hypochlorous acid) it also produces chlorine gas -which will burn your eyes, throat, etc and can in fact kill you. If you do this, make sure you are in a well ventilated area...
