    US Grown Hops Shortage?

Ha! I was referring to the LHBS's... Never trust someone who is trying to sell you something to give you unbiased information on the quality or scarcity of that thing.

    US Grown Hops Shortage?

I take this as another "The sky is falling!" kind of report -much like the ones telling us how we will never be able to buy cornys again so we should buy lots today at this special price... I'm not saying it isn't true, just consider the bias in your source.

Kettle size & to Full Boil or Not

Get the bigger kettle. I started brewing in January, with a setup from Midwest that included a 5 gallon pot -it has been great, but I am limited to extract partial boil recipes only. My 10 gallon pot should arrive this week, which will allow me to do full boil extract, as well as allowing me...

where do I find a heating element

A low wattage light bulb attached to a temperature controller is a common and easy method. You will need a dual channel temperature controller -channel one turns on the fridge when the temp gets too high, and channel two turns on the light bulb when the temperature gets too low. These are not...

    Wow what an expensive beer

That's about what I've paid for Chimay/Duvel/Lindemans on tap. I've never actually seen the 330ml bottles.

    Wow what an expensive beer

Chimay blue is $11 a bottle at BevMo (chain liquor store) http://www.bevmo.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=1639 so I'd say $9 at a restaurant is pretty damn good. I'd be impressed with a restaurant that charged less than retail for a beer...

Ideas for adding a (hobby !) brewery/tavern/mancave to a house...

If you enjoy it, go for it. There is no such thing as too over the top as long as you can afford it (don't bankrupt your family for a single add-on) and as long as you can handle the stress of the project itself. Some people spend years building out a space for themselves, others are...

How hard is a 220 to install?

It is trivial... if you know what you are doing. If not, hire an electrician. This is one of those things that doing it wrong can kill you or burn down your house.

    cold crashing questions

    1. crash in your fermenter, let the sediment settle out, and then rack clear beer to your bottling bucket. 2. boil a small amount of water with your bottling sugar -this will dissolve it fully. Put the hot sugar water solution into your bottling bucket first, and then rack your cold beer on...

That famous line from Blue Velvet... I drank a lot of it back in college -it's cheap, you can drink it all night, and it's really cheap,

    William's Brewing

Have it shipped to a friend who can reship it to you? This is not an uncommon problem. Some businesses just don't do international -some that do ship internationally don't do shipping to Canada. USA/Canada shipping is relatively simple for individuals, but is surprisingly complicated for...

    Easy Clean sanatizer?

Easy Clean used to be considered a sanitizer... now it is considered a cleaner. It will work fine, as many here can attest to, but StarSan is so much better. When you run out, think about getting some OxiClean for a cleaner, and StarSan as a sanitizer.

    Bottle sanitizing and drying alternatives?

I use my kitchen sink and dish drainer. I soak bottles in a sink full of hot water and OxiClean to remove labels/residue. A quick scrub with a green scrubby works to knock off any glue residue. Some bottles need a little work with the bottle brush to get out the last of whatever grime is...

cost savings measures that you have implemented

So far, I have started washing my yeast. I have 4 strains banked in the fridge to choose from. Once I have a little better understanding of what beers I want to keep in the pipeline at any one time I will start buying malt/grains and hops in bulk instead of buying kits. Biggest savings I can...

Morebeer kettles? Opinions on other brands? Need advice

Check out the Penrose kettle from Brewhemoth -they are awesome. http://brewhemoth.com/penrose-kettle As I understand it they do build-to-order so expect some lag time between ordering and delivery, but if you want them to customize it with additional fittings just ask.

    Yuba City Brewers

I used to live between Auburn and Grass Valley, so I was vaguely in your area... There are actually a few brew supply places in the general area (or at least within an hour drive). Google knows all :) http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=yuba+city+brewing+supplies
