First AG Brew Day with BrewPRON

Here's the MLT after adding sparge water and mixing well. I let that rest for 15 minutes, vorlaufed and drained. Seven inches is 6.5 gallons and I hit it pretty much spot on. That's what Beersmith told me it should end up as. I'm using Beersmith on the free 21 day trial and will be buying...

First AG Brew Day with BrewPRON

Thank you all for your kind words. I try to be organized, otherwise I lose my ability to deal rationally with... everything. Here is an image of the cleared vorlauf from the first runnings. I hit my strike temperature after a top up of about half a gallon of hot water. I wanted to try for...

First AG Brew Day with BrewPRON

And finally, here is where I'm at right now. I hit my strike temperature of 152 nearly dead on, and mixed the mash as you can see in the last picture. I have to head back out to the garage where the ambient temperature is in the low 30's to heat the sparge water. The distortions on the...

First AG Brew Day with BrewPRON

Here I'm heating my mash water according to the Beersmith calculations for my recipe. You can also see the recipe sheet itself and my brewlog next to the pre-heating MLT. If you look really closely you can also see the modest sound system I have in my garage for occasions such as this.

First AG Brew Day with BrewPRON

Here you can see a number of different views of the chiller from the dry run that included a leak test and a vinegar water bath to pre-clean it for brewday. Note the copper wire handle that I thought might come in handy for putting this carefully into hot wort.

First AG Brew Day with BrewPRON

Here are images of my brew rig from yesterdays "dry run" just to make sure that everything works. You will also see the Immersion Chiller I built after watching BobbyM's most excellent videos, found here: YouTube - Immersion Chiller (IC) Build

First AG Brew Day with BrewPRON

First I built an MLT according to the instructions I found in this thread: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/cheap-easy-10-gallon-rubbermaid-mlt-conversion-23008/ I used a less expensive Coleman cooler I found at K-mart for $20 but the parts list was straight from this thread and it is...

Has anyone else been brave enough to begin this obsession with swmbo pregnant?

Beware of off flavors (and odors) after bottling :D.

Man, AG really IS that easy!

Dude. I was totally focused on the birds. The brewing will be a piece of cake. The reason for that, in all seriousness, is the numerous incredibly patient explanations of all things related to every niggling aspect of brewing. I haven't yet come across a question that I've thought of...

Man, AG really IS that easy!

You realize of course that you have now created unreasonable expectations in my mind about my upcoming first AG brew day.

Do these kind of conversations happen when she is not pregnant?

    Bottling from the spigot

+1 I tried out your method bottling my last batch and it was infinitely superior and much more comfortable than sitting on the floor with a bunch of bottles. And my socks didn't get wet from walking around in beer that had dripped all over the floor from moving the bottling wand around all...

    good summer brew

Do what I am doing. Brew a different style every week. Put them in the closet and forget about them. Then sometime in the summer try a few out on the porch. See what you like best. You can call it style research! Dancing Banana-----> :ban:

    BUGS in my grain

Discussing the great outdoors with a friend who had never been outside the city before, I casually mentioned that I had drunk mountain stream water. He was appalled. "I would never do that...fish f*** in there!" I know you are not looking for an "answer" and I don't have one. However, my...

Trying the First Bottle of the first Batch

A blog works. A small composition notebook is even easier. Use it like a lab notebook. Keep all your brew information in there and also make tasting notes on some pages. I'm a lab scientist so keeping a lab notebook is second nature to me. It isn't that hard to get in the habit even if...

Temperature Swings after Primary Fermentation Completed?

Same thing happened to me this morning and the house is really cold today. My major concern is that the cold temperature will ruin brewnight. Dancing Banana is cold today.
