Can you sanitize with Isopropyl Alcohol 91%?

You poor fellow... I would gladly take up the duty which you are clearly unwilling to fulfill. Let the hallucinations begin!

    Yahoo, success, I think

Is he right? It's easy to be a critic; much harder to brew good beer.

Can you sanitize with Isopropyl Alcohol 91%?

Sure, if you don't need your vision... From Wikipedia: Isopropyl alcohol is oxidized by the liver into acetone by alcohol dehydrogenase. Symptoms of isopropyl alcohol poisoning include flushing, headache, dizziness, CNS depression, nausea, vomiting, anesthesia, and coma. Use in...

    Metallic off flavors

I just re-read your original post. I know you said that you were ignoring the fact that it had been in the bottle for only one week but... You are probably just tasting green beer. Unless you have been brewing for a long time and know what green beer tastes like, the flavors you are...

    Metallic off flavors

BobbyM has a nice tutorial video on making a chiller. I followed his directions from start to finish as they were clear and easy to follow. I believe that his recommendation was to put the finished chiller in a mixture of water and white vinegar for a while. I did this and heated that...

Did you clean your chiller before using it? I have heard that a new copper chiller can impart off flavors.

Cheap & Easy 10 Gallon Rubbermaid MLT Conversion

The model I purchased had a removable drain plug unit that was threaded. I unscrewed it in the store to be sure and then bought the thing. No power tools required.

Cheap & Easy 10 Gallon Rubbermaid MLT Conversion

I found a square 48 Qt Coleman cooler at K-Mart for 19.95. Granted it's not round, but it is square... They had a ton of them in stock and the same hardware will convert a square cooler and will do the same job.

    Hi All...Newbie from Raleigh here...

Stimulus? Nice handle... Touring the Carolina Brewery is a great idea. I must make time to do that. Thanks for the excellent suggestion. Has anybody toured the new brewery near the Angus Barn on Highway 70 (I think)? It's called Long Rider or something to that effect. The guys at...

    Palisade Pale Ale (MO/Palisade SMaSH)

    Palisade Pale Ale (MO/Palisade SMaSH)

I just tried something similar with MO and Centennial. I'm planning on bottling next week so I don't have any results yet. Basically it was 13 lbs of MO mashed at 152 for an OG of 1.074 1 oz Centennial at 60 min 1 oz Centennial at 20 min 1 oz Centennial at 5 min Nottingham starter...

72 hrs & no visible fermentation??

This. As the previous poster has rightly pointed out, if you pitched yeast you are fermenting. Let your hydrometer answer this question after a week in the primary fermenter and you will likely find that all is well.

    Smash?

Where did this particular SMaSH fall short in your mind? I just brewed an MO/Centennial SMaSH IPA that I'm hoping will be quite good. :off:

Man, AG really IS that easy!

Thanks! As a little background, I'm a lab scientist so I don't find the technical aspects of a long protocol (recipe) particularly intimidating. In the lab I frequently have to figure things out from written instructions and improvise as I go along when surprises arise. Organization and...

First AG Brew Day with BrewPRON

Sorry to hear you could not get your grain. Vintage nothing, I built those bad boys. They are made of buyout TV speakers for the mids, and buyout car audio tweeters for the highs. The pair cost less than $100 for the complete build. The bass drivers were ~$10 each also in a buyout and...

Your math is spot on and I'm a moron. It's a 60 Qt pot. Clearly I have visions of grandeur. I went back and fixed the original post.

Man, AG really IS that easy!

So I downloaded Beersmith as you recommended. It totally rocks and I will be buying it before the free trial runs out. Today was my first AG brew day. I documented it here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f36/first-ag-brew-day-brewpron-106218/ Beersmith made the calculations for me and...

First AG Brew Day with BrewPRON

That's a Bayou Classic 120 Qt shrimp pot. The 5 gallon batch was almost silly in there the pot is so freaking enormous. If this recipe works out the way I want it to I'm going to go to 10 gallon batches. It took 5 hours from setup to cleanup and for that kind of time I should do a...

First AG Brew Day with BrewPRON

Got a nice boil going very quickly using the propane burner I purchased recently and froze my arse off watching it. The consolation was that after the addition of 1 oz of Centennial for bittering at the start of the boil I was in heaven. The only thing wrong with the afternoon is I didn't have...
