    Badfish IIPA

How'd it turn out so far? I tried to make this recipe but my LBHS didn't have any of the right hops, haha. So I did the same grain bill and then did: 1 oz warrior (13.7%) @ 60 mins 2 oz zythos (10.6%) @ 30 mins 2 oz Cascade (6.2%) @ 15 mins 1 oz Cascade (6.2%) @ 10 mins 1 oz Cascade...

Arghhhh! 10 gallons of "band-aid" beer!

:D :D :D Haha had to point those out... Sorry Yooper. I read a lot of your advice on here and always enjoy what you have to say. Sorry for your loss. Maybe I can send some beer in an envelope? Or have fax machines advanced enough to fax liquid yet?

    Thermapen Open Box Sale

Anyone think this would be worth it for use in a cooler mash tun? http://www.thermoworks.com/products/alarm/oven_temp_timer.html Had a buddy get one in a CL trade and just inserted the probe in his mash tun and screwed the lid right over the line. Constant temp monitoring without...

Boil, or secondary whole vanilla beans

Yep! Check out my post on page 1 ;) I boiled two beans after cutting them in half and scraping the insides. Threw everything (including water) into the secondary. I only used enough water to cover the beans and to not completely evaporate. It worked just fine, lots of vanilla flavor!

    Pros/Cons re: fermentation coolers>>

This was a concern of mine that I would get one that was too small, and not be able to ferment multiple beers at the same time. But then I thought maybe it doesn't matter, 1. because, like you said, I will prob only hold the temp for a week or so 2. I have 3 fermenting right now, but that was...

    Pros/Cons re: fermentation coolers>>

Thanks for all the insight! I hadn't thought of a freezer not being designed for fermentation temps, that is a good thought. Probably better for my purposes to get something that is better desgined for higher temps than a freezer, as most beers I make only need to be cooled to the mid-60s...

Boil, or secondary whole vanilla beans

Agree with these posts. I made a beer recently using two vanilla beans in the secondary. Just cut the beans down the middle and scraped out the insides then threw the whole thing into boiling water for about 10 mins then dumped everything into my secondary and racked on top. No problems...

    Pros/Cons re: fermentation coolers>>

Awesome, thank both of y'all for the responses. It sounds like the only real issue is cost/space. Luckily, I am not married and so these aren't insurmountable obstacles. I'm leaning towards the chest freezer if I can find a good deal and find a spot for it as it sounds like all I need to do is...

    Pros/Cons re: fermentation coolers>>

I want to build my own fermentation cooler and was wondering what type I should make. I read a lot of threads on this, most of them making some type of cooler in the mold of the "son of fermentation cooler" using an old fridge, a temp controller and ice compartments/fans. My question is this...

    Which Conical to buy?

I am relatively new to brewing (only about 6 months and probably 15 brews deep), am probably a long way off from being able to buy one of these, and have little clue as to what a lot of things y'all are saying mean (tri-clamps, glycol baths, etc). Even still, this thread is fascinating. I'd...

burner selection: is it all about the Btu's?

Exactly! I have no idea how you would fry a turkey of you can't even boil water! So, I cut the wires last night and was still having trouble with it. After playing around with it, I was able to bypass the fancy turnoff valve entirely so now it's pretty much just a straight connection. Thanks...

False bottom and filter question >>

That's it! Thanks deafsmith! Problem solved. It may just become a nice pad to put under my Carboy.

    False bottom/filter question

Haha http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/447/e5fi0x0hd.jpg/sr=1 So this is what I posted in the other thread on the AG board, mystery semi-solved. No one seems to use these, so it looks like I won't be making a habit of it. Thanks for the replies - Ok, that is what I was thinking...

False bottom and filter question >>

Ok, that is what I was thinking, which is why I was confused when my lbhs was telling me about it. I had always read it was the grain bed that was the filter, so I'm not sure why is was marketed as something that was necessary. It made things painfully slow on my first batch. It is made out...

False bottom and filter question >>

Any thoughts from anyone? Bueller? Anyone use a filter in addition to their false bottom?

burner selection: is it all about the Btu's?

Hmm I may have misread your original post a little, this is what mine looks like: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202038907/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=turkey+frier&storeId=10051 But still, it looks like the wire cutter is my best bet at this point. I...

burner selection: is it all about the Btu's?

Ah, interesting. I was afraid it wouldn't work if I did that, but since it doesn't really work now, I will be giving this "fix" a try! Thanks -

burner selection: is it all about the Btu's?

I use a burner with a temperature gauge that cuts off if it gets to a certain temperature. It seems to ALWAYS cut off. Anyone have any experience with this and know how to get around it? I tried to just move the sensor off the flame but can't get it to start when I do that. This burner...
