Does Mashing Specialty Malts Result in a Higher OG?

I would guess that depends on the beer you're brewing. I love big RIS's with high final gravity. They're a bit sweet (but the sweetness is different from lactose IMO) and they're rich, thick and viscous. I work pretty hard to make sure there are plenty of unconverted starches to allow it to...

Tall & slender mash tun w/ recirculation. Thoughts?

That is probably too fast and a backwards approach to managing flow in a KRIMS rig. You want to manage the flow rate with the valve draining from the tun to the kettle, then use the autosparge to automatically match that. When I recirculate, I wait about 10 mins after dough in to begin...

Does Mashing Specialty Malts Result in a Higher OG?

I'm confused by this (and that's not a hard thing to do). You say Weyermann Carafoam has unconverted starch and mashing will increase the OG. Won't the starch, converted or otherwise increase the OG? Isn't it really a matter of fermentability? Is it both? Can you elaborate a bit. I'm always...

how to strip with stainless steel sleeve on thermocouple wire

apropos question. I just got some of that wire to set up my franken build controller, which is an auber cube witth the DSPR output control circuit routed outside the box to a male and female plug. I can plug them together for normal operation or I can run the output line from my craftbeerpi...

    Wire Gauge Question

For the 120v coming off one leg of the 240 coming in, couldn't you fuse it right up front, then run the hot to a bus that serves all the 120v consumers in the box? As long as the fuse is sized to handle the current and matches the wire size for your 120v circuit, shouldn't that suffice?

Does anyone line their mash tun with a BIAB?

I mashed in a rectangular cooler with a bazooka filter for quite a few batches, starting in March. By the next winter, I realized how much it sucked to try to clean out a cooler mash tun when you can't just take it out and hose it off. Massive PITA. In addition, I had quite a bit of loss in the...

    Spike's upcoming eBIAB system

I use one of these. It can be adjusted up and down. I like my table fairly low when doughing in or pulling the bag. The one I have is 52" and has a couple drawers, which are nice for storing things like refractometer and other brew day related items. I can also roll it out of the way to clean...

    Pound of Flesh

You could check into local homebrew clubs. Ours has annual dues of $15, but we get grains in a group buy from a local brewery for about $25/bag. We also do group import grain orders where we save a lot on shipping. I got floor malted maris otter and golden promise for about $50/bag.

Any mesh basket users ever try lining the sides with stainless sheet to get a malt pipe?

Some systems use a mesh basket that's mesh on the bottom and sides. Others go for the "malt pipe" effect, where it's solid on the sides and mesh only on the bottom. I'm curious if anyone has ever tried to line the sides of their basket with a thin sheet of stainless to get the malt pipe effect...

Stainless steel basket for BIAB brewing- cheap!

I have a Brewbuilt 10G kettle that I use with a 240v induction unit. I was thinking about trying a basket and this was a great opportunity to do that cheaply. The 13" just fits in my kettle (about 3'8" all around). It's right on the edge of being too tall. I have to pull the handle off (genius...

3-wire dryer outlet to 4-wire help needed

If it were me, I'd run two power intputs to my box, one for 240, one for 120. Make the 240 input a 4 prong, but have nothing on the neutral line. If/when you move, you wouldn't have to change much to pull your 120 from the 4 conductor 240 input if/when you have access to it. That just seems...

Electrical Panel - Component Mount Details

Thanks, I'm going to look at my cube and decide how hard it would be to wrap it. I really like that look, but I won't bother if I have to totally take it apart to get it covered.

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

Just an update. On a hunch (since others don't seem to be running into this issue) I picked up a different USB adapter for the micro SD and tried again. Everything worked perfectly. I guess the adapter they sent with my pi (from canakit) was flaky. Too bad I can't get a craftbeerpi interface...

Fine crush, burnt batch... help troubleshoot

I don't know that that's entirely true. Let's say you want to mash at 157 to leave more complex sugars and produce a higher final gravity (some I do with stouts because I don't like dry stouts, I like 'em a bit sweet with a thick mouthfeel). If your temp drops down to 150, you'll get more beta...
