Looks like I'm finally going to try 2 Vessel K-RIMS

OK, a bit of a change here. I was going to use my induction burner controlled by CraftBeerPi but my test run showed that the induction burner did not like being cycled off. So, same concept, but I'm switching to a Spike eKettle with the standard immersed heating element. It was a custom order...

    Induction cook top heat control?

I'm just climbing out of the rabbit hole of trying to come up with a solid induction solution. I wanted to control it with a PID, so I bought an Adcraft induction burner that has a manual control so that when powered, it can resume at the power level it was at when it lost power. I though I...

What are you using under your kettle for heat protection?

    sweet....I'll go check 'em out

What are you using under your kettle for heat protection?

My brewing table is wood. I've been using an induction burner, but it's giving me issues now, so I'm switching to a traditional internal heating element. I'll need some sort of trivet to protect the wood top. It's a 10G kettle, pretty close to 14" diameter (Spike). Anyone found a nice round...

You know you're a home brewer when?

When the credit card statement comes and it's littered with brewing related purchases: grain, hops, quick disconnects, silicon hose, etc. When your city gets hit by a derecho, you're without power for a week, and one of the things you power with your small generator is the kegerator.

    Adjusting salts in Brewfather BIAB

I'm new to Brewfather. I created one recipe so far and haven't brewed yet (in a couple weeks), so I'm not much help. One idea pops into my head: Treat your mashout addition of water like a "parge" addition and let it calc your additions for the mash and "sparge" separately. Essentially that's...

Getting the last bits of grain out of MLT

Exactly. Mine isn't that big, but it's a chapman thermobarrel, so it's got some extra weight. I'm really curious to hear how the CIP folks do it. I suppose, for them, they could pump water to the sprayer and let it drain into a waste bucket until the solids are gone?....

Getting the last bits of grain out of MLT

I've seen a lot of discussions about getting the bulk of the grain out of the MLT. That's the easy part, IMO. I've also seen info on CIP and I like the concept. My issue is this. I use a scoop or whatever to get the grain out of the MLT. There's always some that sticks to the sides, the...

Recirculation Manifold, Loc Line or Spray Nozzle?

This. I got a ss float for 3/8" silicone and just float it on the top.

Brew Boss SS basket COFI setup

I was going to. Picked up a BB basket (but without the COFI part) on sale last fall. When I got it, I realized that it barely fits my kettle. If I add a COFI-like center tube, I would not be able to put the lid on. I've considered a number of workarounds, but then I got a deal on a chapman...

Help me make sense of all this 1st time All Grain data

Regarding the comments to not use the SG scale on a refractometer and the comments about ATC, I've been brewing all grain for about 5 years and hanging out here, reading a bunch, etc., ...that's the first time I've heard either of them.

Help me make sense of all this 1st time All Grain data

I have a cereal killer...it works very well. Keep in mind that the grains are pulled through pretty slowly when milling. The first time I used mine, I didn't think it was pulling it through, but after a few minutes cranking by hand, it was clear it was working. I have it powered now, but when...

    Adding fresh yeast for bottling

I don't think I addressed what happens in the presence of food...only said they die at any temp in the absences of food.

    Adding fresh yeast for bottling

OK, technically, yes. Yeast, in the absence of food, die at any temp. The point is that fridge temps don't kill yeast. Is that accurate enough for you?

    Adding fresh yeast for bottling

I store my liquid ale yeast in the fridge too. Yeast doesn't die at fridge temps, it will go dormant. Given a long period of time (approaching a year or so), may cause more to drop off, but that would most likely only impact how long it took to bottle condition. Many people cold crash and then...

Liquid yeast is stored in the fridge. Cold crashing didn't harm your yeast.

That dirty word...cleaning!!! How do you go about it?

I'm inconsistent about how/when I clean. For the most part, I clean as I go....dump and shake out the BIAB while I'm boiling for example. No matter what, I always seem to have an hour's worth of cleaning after I've got the wort in the fermenter and yeast pitched. As far as cleaning products, I...

Looks like I'm finally going to try 2 Vessel K-RIMS

It's been my plan for quite some time to ultimately run a 2 vessel kettle RIMS setup, but I've been acquiring equipment over time to spread out the cost. I started by going electric and using my cooler MLT. Then switched to recirculating eBIAB. I picked up a chapman thermobarrel on sale just...
