    Third batch underway!

The pot that was leaking hold 3.5 gals and my grain bag perfectly. The pot in the pic is the larger of the two that I normally use for sparging and the boil. It holds 8 gals with plenty of head space for the boil. Unfortunately it is too wide to stretch the grain bag over the top and even if I...

    1st batch update

I'll check my brew notes when I get home but I don't think it dropped much lower. Its right around 1.02ish. JB

    1st batch update

That's about what I calculated, too. Its definitely lost that bite but I think the ABV is a little higher than that. I had a good little buzz after 1.5 of these. JB

    1st batch update

I love stouts, too. That's why I chose it as my first brew. Also glad I dove into this hobby with all grain. If my brews get better with experience, I'm really excited! JB

    1st batch update

Another update. DELICIOUS! drinking one now. Friends and family like it a lot. Giving a couple to the owner of my LHBS and a friend who is a brew meister at a micro in my area. Hope they are as impressed. JB

    How many brews per tank?

I am on my third brew day and am still using the same standard propane tank. How many brews do you usually get out of a tank?

    Banana Bread Ale

So I transferred this to secondary. Tasted a sample and although, like I mentioned earlier, no banana-ness at all, it tastes like a decent wheat beer. Not my favorite style, but def drinkable.

    Third batch underway!

I know its a little late but I am brewing a GLCA clone. I figure everybody will be running to me after running out, lol. Nightmarish and disastrous start. My mash pot (BIAB) sprung two minor leaks so I had to use my sparge pot which doesn't fit the strainer bag. I feel like my efficiency might...

    Banana Bread Ale

Wow, this thread has been around for a really long time. So I tried this a few weeks ago and no luck at all. I just transferred it to secondary today and it didn't taste offensive, it definitely didn't taste good either...nor banana-y. I'll let it clear for a week then bottle it and stick it in...

    First bottling day.

Thanks. How did you find those and how do I fix or avoid the problem? Or are you just messing with me, lol? Don't you know us newbs are uber fragile!?!?!?! JB
  11. jbsayers

    First bottling day.

They are 12 ounce bottles. Mostly Sam Adams Octoberfest bottles that I saved. I expected 5 gallons but ended up with about 4.5 due to losing a little more in the boil than I expected (it was the first time I ever brewed) and some transfer loss when racking to 2ndary and taking gravity samples. I...
  12. jbsayers

    First bottling day.

They are plastic crates similar to what they use to deliver bread. I found them on cragslist in the Akron, OH area. I doubt the guy still has some but I could check for you. They are great! They hold 54 regular style bottles perfectly. JB

    First bottling day.

So the app told me the pics didn't attach hence there being 3 nigh identical pics.

    First bottling day.

Just finished bottling my first brew. Went really well thanks to all the advice given on the forums. Thanks all! Now the wait for carbing and maturing. JB

    Akron Ohio Beer bars

Melt! Bra and Grilled has a great selection and amazing food. They have 3 locations I'm aware of. Lakewood, Cleveland Heights and Independence. Worth the drive.

    Banana Bread Ale

Threadus ressurectus! Did the brew have more banana aroma after it was carbed? I am working on a banana ale right now and am very curious. Thanks, JB

Is a 20 Gallon pot too big?

Agreed. I also have a 15 gal SS pot I use as well. The larger SS one has a larger diameter and works great for those full 7 gal boils. Then I just transfer back to the smaller aluminum pot after the boil to cool in an ice bath while using an immersion chiller.. The transfer helps promote...

Is a 20 Gallon pot too big?

I do 5gal brews using the BIAB method. I mash in a Bayou Classic 7 or 7.5 gal aluminum pot. Works great! Not too much head space so I keep good temps during the mash (with proper insulation) and the 5 gal paint strainer bag fits perfectly over the mouth of the pot and sits in the water enough to...

    1st batch update

I'm posting updates like I actually have followers of my brewing experience eagerly awaiting my words, lol. I'm excited, what can I say? Just took a SG reading from the oatmeal stout I made last week. OG was 1.065 and it is currently at 1.023. I know oatmeal stouts mellow with age but DAMN I...

    2nd Batch under the belt!

So I just finished up my second brew day. Some improvements made on my process but also a couple problems I did not have my first go-round. I started to worry I was going to get horrible efficiency because for some reason I just could not keep my mash temp where I wanted it. I wanted to mash...
