Absolute kick butt .... I got a free 5 gallon kit...

I recently bottled a coopers real ale kit. You'll definitely want to use DME or LME rather than dextrose for the extra 3lbs of sugar (I used a 3.3lb can of Coopers Light LME). It tastes quite good, and that's before carbing. Other than that, I would recommend picking up a racking cane...

Monkey Wards Chest Freezer to Keezer Project

Ahh, I hadn't thought of that. Haven't hacked on a chest freezer yet, wasn't aware they might run coolant lines through the walls. I'll have to keep that in mind when I have the money to build out one myself. :mug:

How many gallons of EdWort's Apfelwein have been made?

    Started a 5gal batch today. 5703 + 5 = 5708

Monkey Wards Chest Freezer to Keezer Project

The collar is there to add height to allow room for more than two kegs. There's a hump in the bottom where the refrigeration mechanics are hidden. If you set a keg on the hump, it's too tall to close the lid. By adding the collar, you can put 5 kegs in the keezer instead of 2 :D If you...

    Beers that get you sick

Anything Miller is an instant headache for me. Bud and Coors I'm fine, although Bud Select is about the only macro-lager I'll willingly drink, the rest tastes like, well, doesn't really taste like anything... Bud Select at least has a LITTLE flavor, still think it's pig swill though...

    Where to buy sanke kegs???

Generally, and I'm making a small assumption here (yes, I know the definition of assume, I don't need reminded...), retired kegs are retired for a reason... When I am looking, I would be looking for serviceable kegs as well, hence why I would be looking for somewhere to buy NEW as well as...

    Where to buy sanke kegs???

Ok, let me preface this by saying, it'll be a good while before I can even think of spending the money on kegging equipment. :( That said, is there anywhere that you can buy small quantities of new or used, but still servicable, 15.5gal 1/2bbl kegs? Specifically being NOT a commercial...

    Coopers Kit

I have a coopers real ale in secondary at the moment. I used a 3.3lb can of coopers light malt extract with it, fermented out just fine. OG 1.052 FG 1.012 when transfered to secondary at a week. It fermented extremely fast, under 48hrs had it down to 1.016. It's a little darker than I was...

How many gallons of EdWort's Apfelwein have been made?

Making a half gallon test batch, full batch is on the books, will report back when it's going... 5621.5 + .5 = 5622

    Hello, hello from The Bend

Hey all from Indiana! I'm really liking this site, found alot of usefull information so far. I'm still a little new, but I'm catching on quick (also a little broke at the moment - see my cider test batch thread). Not counting my cider test, I'm on my second brew. First batch was a John...

Looks to me like a common white mold. Can't tell for sure, the picture isn't great.

    Test batch of cider

Yeah, that would work if any of my friends that aren't in the same boat as me drank beer... Most of my friends aren't big on beer. It's nice in that I get to drink most of what I brew, but it sucks cause I don't really have anyone to share it with. :off: I really don't want to, but I'm...

HELP! i think i just wasted a batch of beer

Did you give it a spin to knock off any bubbles? Other than that, no idea what's up with your hydrometer. Fermenting out in under 48hrs is not that uncommon though. My last batch fermented out in under 36hrs. Racked it to secondary after a week, waiting on it to clear at the moment.

    Test batch of cider

Well, this was intended more as a taste test, I've never had hard cider. I'm out of work at the moment, and I really can't afford the $20 for the juice. I figured, what the hell, I had the stuff laying around, might as well give it a shot. Something to pass the time between checking the job...

    Test batch of cider

I'm running a test batch of cider. Wanted to give it a try without spending any money. I grabbed a small bottle of Juicy Juice apple juice I had sitting around the house, added a 1/4cup of sugar and a tsp of champaigne yeast I had laying around (I use it for carbing soda). Drilled a hole in...

    Using plastic fizzy water bottles

The kit instructions are, excuse my language, utter crap. Hit the beginners forum and read through some of the threads there. It's a pretty regular topic of conversation... It's refered to as the 1-2-3 rule. 1-week in primary, 2-weeks in secondary, 3-weeks in bottle. Or you can just do...

    Using plastic fizzy water bottles

If you just started your brew tonight, you shouldn't be bottling for another 3 weeks or so. Bottling immediately after fermentation has finished is not a good idea unless you want to be drinking green beer. You really should let it age at least 2-3wks before bottling. Best for bottles though...

I know its crazy, but will it work?

Ok, now mind you, I've not tried growing hops (yet). I have been reading about how to do so though. The problem I see with that idea is that the horizontal root runners would have nowehre to go. Also, do you really want to try hanging it 20ft in the air, or were you planning on running the...

    Remote probe thermometer wort proofing

Wish I'd seen this before I destroyed the EXACT same thermometer on my first batch of HB. Problem is, not only did it ruin the probe, but the thermo's electronics don't work right now either, even with a new probe. My only problem is, I picked up a replacement, but this really isn't an option...

    Filtering your beer?

That layer of sediment was the yeast that carbonated your beer. Unless you plan to force carbonate your bottles (Obviously it can be done, the commercial breweries do it, but I don't think you want to spend THAT much money on equipment...), or you want to drink flat beer, you WANT that layer of...
