    Star-San vs. Iodophor - FIGHT!

I've had the same jug of starsan concentrate for years. It goes a long way so the cost really isn't that much. That said, I've also used the bleach and vinegar no rinse successfully when at a friends house. Bleach will ruin your clothes but it does make an effective no rinse sanitizer. The...

Cut a hole in top of keg, or cut top off?

You're right, my suggestion does not preclude cutting the 'top' off. Still, what would be the advantage to doing that, especially if you think you would have to weld a reinforcing bar back on?

Cut a hole in top of keg, or cut top off?

The irony is, even in that photo he cut a hole *in the top.* He didn't cut the whole top off at the sides, he just cut off the skirt but saved the part of the skirt with the handles. It looks ok but why bother? The keg itself isn't very heavy at all and you wouldn't save much weight by...

    Sanke kegs in Tampa

They may be sold locally but I will keep you posted. However, shipping IS crazy expensive. You can check greyhound shipping (the bus line). It would be shipped from 33569.

Cut a hole in top of keg, or cut top off?

Cut a hole in the bottom and put a 2" triclover clamp on the spear post. Bingo you have a welded in bottom drain. The clamp is about $7, then you need a reducer to npt which is also only a couple bucks. I'm pretty sure brewers hardware sells everything you need. If you do cut the top then just...

    FS: Sanke Keg Fermenters

I think you would do better to sell the fermenter kits on here because they can be easily shipped. Then sell the kegs locally. If you decide to part it out then I too would be very interested in one of the brewer's hardware fermenter kits.

    Sanke kegs in Tampa

Any interest in sanke kegs, local pickup in Tampa? These are uncut so you could do the triclover clamp trick and have a bottom valve or you could use them for fermenting. With 3 converted to keggles you'd have the perfect setup for 10 gal batches and use a 4th to ferment the batch in. There...

    CO2 Refill - Tampa Area?

I once worked at uhaul and you can get propane there. They fill so that's an option if you don't want to exchange your tank. As for what is cheap in the area I can't help since my brewery is electric. Sorry.

    Stout Faucet Newb Question

Most places use co2 tanks for the beer gas so you could just have your empty co2 tank filled with beer gas and be good to go. You just couldn't have a co2 served beer on tap at the same time if you only have one tank and regulator. This would be a cheap way to try it out and see if it is worth...

how do blended gases behave in solution? A beergas question.

Well that's what I was afraid of. I appreciate the timely and thoughtful responses.

how do blended gases behave in solution? A beergas question.

I know, the title is about as clear as mud but it's the best I could come up with. I'm wondering specifically about beer gas - which is about 70/30 blend of nitrogen and CO2. I have a nitro setup and have used beer gas and get the idea (serve at high pressure for the stout faucet while not...

Best force carb method for 24 hours

Young beers can taste rough. The flavors mellow and blend with a little time. Supposedly the young beer also has a lot of acetaldehyde which is, evidently, a precursor to ethanol (i.e. the yeast make it then transform it into ethanol). So if the yeast haven't had ample time to finish the...

    CO2 Refill - Tampa Area?

It's used with a stout faucet to give your beer a 'guiness type' pour (you know, with the cascading creamy head). You can serve any beer this way but it's typically done with dark beers. It's a matter of taste but I strongly prefer it for serving my stouts and even porters. Basically the...

    Forced Carbonation, take three

In my opinion 5ft is too short especially for 1/4" id hose. You need something more like 8ft. 5ft will get you a rough and foamy pour at 12psi... that rough pour will leave your beer flat. That is probably your problem. Additionally, leaving your beer at 35psi for a day may result in...

The myth of the <$50 corny keg

Sorry for the off topic question but.. I'd considered sankey kegs for fermenters as I do 10 gal batches but I'm curious what your method for cleaning them is. It's hard enough cleaning a glass carboy and I can see when it's clean. Is it as simple as pumping oxyclean in and letting it sit...

Best force carb method for 24 hours

+1 Force carbing, if done correctly, won't affect the flavor of the beer. The problem is that it is often done on green beers. This combined with the tendency to over carb while force carbing often results in less-than-optimal tasting home brew.

Best force carb method for 24 hours

In my experience the 'sharp' taste is carbonic bite (same taste as seltzer water) and isn't a result of force carbing but is a consequence of over carbing which happens easily when force carbing. You want the beer cold, set the pressure at serving pressure (13psi or so) then shake vigorously or...

    Stout Faucet Newb Question

+1 You can swap the stout faucet in as necessary. Pressure should be around 30psi on the beer gas but could be less if a shorter line were used. In my experience it is trial and error getting the beergas pressure right given your particular setup.

    Forced Carbonation, take three

We need more info to be helpful. What diameter hose? How long? What temp is the fridge at? Is the beer at fridge temp when you begin carbonating? It could be carbed just right and then become over carbed as it continues to cool off in the fridge. The first thing I would recommend is to remove...

    CO2 Refill - Tampa Area?

I was about to post on this as well. I'm in the brandon/south tampa area. I need both co2 and beer gas. Airgas is pricey but appears to be the only supplier of beergas in the area. I appreciate the tip about crumptons, $16 isn't terrible but it isn't good either. I was getting co2 refills for...
