    Large Fermentation Chamber

Even if you are throwing a kilowatt at it, you still need insulation. You are definitely on the safer side with a 1 HP (~750W in, 2kW out?) glycol system or a 6000 BTU/hr (~1700W out) air conditioner than with a 300W fridge, but you still can't set it up willy-nilly so it has to cool or...

    Large Fermentation Chamber

Sounds great to me. Just two suggestions: 1) even though polyisocyanurate foam gets a bit worse at colder temperatures, I think it's still your best choice for insulation. It comes with aluminum (or aluminized paper or foil) on both sides, which is great as vapor barrier. I don't see what the...

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

Some info on power usage: After the change to three TEC1-12715 running in series on 24V, drawing 8A, the power supply delivers 192W (from current and voltage measurement) and draws 230W (from outlet power meter); that gives a power supply efficiency of 84%. The setup used 1 kWhr in 7 hours, so...

How do I mix and scale up homemade oxiclean?

No, I was not saying that 3% hydrogen peroxide is all you need for cleaning. It might do the job for sanitizing, after cleaning. I do not know. I have never used 3% hydrogen peroxide for brewing purposes. Here is an interesting article on a brewing specific cleaning problem: The removal and...

How do I mix and scale up homemade oxiclean?

I'm not sure why you would want to do this (mix hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate). My understanding is that sodium percarbonate (the main ingredient - 65% or so - in oxiclean) is a cheap and convenient way to generate hydrogen peroxide; cheaper than buying the 3% hydrogen peroxide mix with...

    I'm about to give up.

How did the brew go? Did the supervision by the cat help?

    Building a low-cost BIAB system

Regarding passivation: there have been several recent discussions of this topic on this forum. I think in the end most agreed that a warm 5% citric acid solution is the best way to remove excess surface iron (and corrosion) and prepare the chromium rich surface that can then build up the...

Why are brewing controllers so expensive?

Interesting thread. I don't quite understand the posts saying that with going from 120V to 240V you are also going to higher amperage (and that drives up the price). To me the main point of using 240V is double the power for the same amperage, same wire cross section, same wire power losses. Of...

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

Pretty exciting: the three TEC1-12715 in series connected to 24V (seeing 8V each) are indeed drawing 8A. With a short-circuited cooling loop and the hot side radiator drawing in 78F/25C room air, the system now reaches 32F/0C! That's with about 220W electrical power - still need to measure the...

    Building a low-cost BIAB system

Just some random remarks: 1) I wouldn't go overboard with pumps etc. initially. 2) Ditto for control automation. Having more than one thermometer for monitoring (or one that you really trust) is good though. 3) it's much easier to get a few kW power out of a gas burner/range than out of a 120V...

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

dtashmore, stupid question: these horse power ratings, they are in 745.7 Watt= 1 hp horse powers, and they are what the compressor draws electrically, not its cooling output, right? But you are probably right: too much calculation can spoil the fun. Autocorrect garbled your post a bit; what was...

Beginner Doing BIAB Wheat Beer. How does my recipe look?

I'm usually (well, when I was still traveling...) bringing apple cider (ebbelwoi?) mustard back from Frankfurt, and, oddly enough, Bavarian Weisswurst(*). But not Weissbier, even though I think they sell it right there in the duty free shop. (*) Back home, the customs lady asked me whether I...

    Brewing mishap. Thoughts?

If you are bottling, and carbonating in the bottle, I think your cold crashing and lagering has to be done after the yeast has carbonated the beer in the bottle. I wouldn't worry too much about cold crashing and lagering. Main thing is to get the sugar (or malt extract, or whatever) dose right...

Beginner Doing BIAB Wheat Beer. How does my recipe look?

Personally, I think it's why a lot of people moved to Amerika.

I think it's all heat leak and condensation (on the lines outside the enclosure), except for 5-10W. I'm more and more convinced that motor bike electrics and home brewing heat gain do not follow the normal laws of physics.

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

Forgot to answer JAreeves' questions 2 and 3: 2: in series, I'd think, i.e. the cold side directly plumbed into the anvil loop. One pump only, obviously. Putting a reservoir and two heat exchangers in between (or just a reservoir, used by two separately pumped loops) just introduces more heat...

Beginner Doing BIAB Wheat Beer. How does my recipe look?

Also, remember that unless the Erzherzog of Bavaria's henchmen are already hot on your trail, you can brew whatever you want. But if you suspect they are, then better not be caught brewing a Weizen!

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

So, while I like and run my system, I must say it is marginal and not robust. I am using nine (9) of those TEC1-12706 peltiers (or whatever it is you actually get when you order them from the cheapest supplier on Amazon), several of them are already broken, and it seems with the fermenter...

Beginner Doing BIAB Wheat Beer. How does my recipe look?

You could also simplify to just pilsner and wheat malt, leave out the orange peel and coriander, and brew a Hefeweizen. I usually get 70% overall efficiency (5 gallon of 1.05 OG out of 10 pounds grain) with the normal mill setting at my store.
