Help me dry out my marzen

By 'dry out', you mean reduce the final gravity? It sounds like you mean something else, since you haven't brewed this yet, if I read your post correctly, so you don't know the final gravity yet. ❓

Why do we sparge with hot water?

'We' don't. I would not go above 170F, the temperature where tannin extraction starts. See for example Astringency from Grains - Oversparging and Hot Sparging Your Beer | Home Brewing Beer Blog by BeerSmith™

Hole size for heater element, malt pipe mesh size?

I made my mash basket from 400 mesh (~40 micrometer hole size) mesh. It works well. These guys here say 1" NPT requires a clearance hole of 1.25", which is 31.75mm, so a bit less than 32.5mm.

Has anyone found a place to buy reasonably priced glycol?

Car antifreeze is fine until you suspect a bit leaked into a keg, or your cat or dog or kid licks some of it. Propylene glycol is really not that expensive.

Has anyone found a place to buy reasonably priced glycol?

I bought half a gallon on amazon for 11 bucks: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0767NGRY4

Ice build up in DIY glycol chiller

It looks like the frost is on the line from the evaporator to the compressor, not the line from the compressor to the condenser. (The condenser is hidden behind the plywood at the bottom right of your first pic.) That means there is still liquid refrigerant left after the evaporator, which means...

    EZboil Makes My Lights Flicker

If you had large inductive loads, then capacitors could compensate to bring the power factor closer to 1. Otherwise I don't see what capacitors would be good for (see previous posts). Regarding zero voltage switching and no noise: I think it again depends on your power factor, and the phase...

    EZboil Makes My Lights Flicker

Maybe the controllers induce higher harmonics, i.e. noise on the main line? Probably hard to measure. Maybe try putting chokes/inductors/filters on the LED DC lines (after the power supply)? I'm not sure what to do about the incandescent flickering. I don't know whether you could get an an...

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

I tried removing the hot side radiator fan and just having the A/C blow cold air (17 C) through the radiator, but the temperature started to creep up (cold feed is at 0 degrees C, Pils is at 5 degrees C), so I put the fan back. I moved it to the other side of the radiator so it now blows through...

Metzen's Mini Fridge Glycol Chiller Conversion

Removing dead yeast from the carbonated mead?

They are doing that with champagne though (removing yeast from the bottle), aren't they? I think they slowly rotate the bottles so the neck sits low, then almost freeze it, remove the cork with the sludge, and quickly recork. I could google it, but what's the fun in that? Edit: googled it...

Metzen's Mini Fridge Glycol Chiller Conversion

Maybe run a fan blowing cold air (from an A/C?) at the condenser of the fridge. Taking heat out of wort takes quite a bit of cooling; heat capacity of water is very high (which is one reason why cold beer is so popular).

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

I should probably update the parts list; the main changes to the original list are the polyisocyanurate enclosure, the switch to the 15A Peltiers that I run at 8V/8A, the Meanwell 24V 350W power supply, and the 120mm by 40mm heat exchangers. In steady state the system uses about 3.1kWhr per...

Arduino Keg Sensor for Level, Temperature, and Pressure with Display

I'm interested, both in a version with the local display as well as web only. (I find my Raspberry Pi's are not running as reliably as they should, so a local display makes sense to me.)

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

Just to add how nice it is to see the second 5 gallon keg cooling down from 14C to 6C in just a few hours! I hooked it up to the cooling loop at midnight, expecting to wake up to a slightly warm Weissbier (since the loop will exchange heat between the kegs), instead the cooldown was already...

    Dumb question about sanitizer

He knows that ('sanitize before brewing'); but how far before, that's his question. Sadly, there seem to be no chemists/biochemists/microbiologists on this forum. They probably have their own invitation only place on the web, where they occasionally share a quote from this forum and laugh...

Arduino Keg Sensor for Level, Temperature, and Pressure with Display

I assume that's the other side (without the emitter and receiver and controller)?

Why are brewing controllers so expensive?

In Germany they slowly crept up from 220V (that's what the old people still call the line voltage, but it hasn't been there since the 80s) to 230V and now 240V, to arrive at a common European standard. Equipment tolerances were adjusted well beforehand, so that old stuff would continue to work...

How many pounds of roasted coffee in 2020

And another pound here, this time Burman's 'Colombian BCT Premium Huila Timana'. I like that Burman is just around the corner in Madison. Three batches in the SR500; two of them I turned off (=switched to cooling) just as second crack began, the third one I ran a bit longer, 11 minutes or so. I...

Why are brewing controllers so expensive?

Maybe it's a metric versus imperial thing. Here in Chicago, 2400W at 120V draws the same current as 4800W at 240V, 20A. Even with the new major.
