EZ Cap (Grolsch) 16oz Bottle @ Midwest

Can anyone tell me why these bottles are so cheap at Midwest? I did the math and they are less than $20 a case (12) including shipping. Anywhere else they are maybe $20 - $30, then add the shipping. Even at my LHBS they are $29 a case. Thanks, Greg

    Egg Fruit and Chico Fruit

Just returned from a few days visiting family in Hawaii. Picked up and brought back some egg fruit and Chico. The egg fruit I tried, I remember liking but can't for the life of me remember what it tasted like. The chico I tried with the skin on and tasted somewhat like brown sugar. My question...

    Question about Yeast

I'm planning to mix up a 5 gallon batch of must. Then I wanted to divide the must into separate 2 and 3 gallons containers and use a different yeast in each container to ferment. Do I need to adjust the amount of yeast I use in each, from say a 5 gram foil pack. Do I need to rehydrate and put...

    Killer Bee Honey

I picked up a gallon of the stuff this weekend at the Maryland renaissance festival. The booth I got it at was called Bee Folks (The Bee Folks). Preatty pricey at $54.00 for a gallon.

Has anyone made mead with Killer Bee honey before? If so, what in particular did you make?

First Attempt At Mead...'lil Advice Please

Couple questions about this recipe: If I leave out the peaches and ginger, what type of a plain mead will I end up with? Will it be dryer because of the absence of the sugar from the peaches? Can I substitute spices for the fruit to make a Spicey mead? Not knowing anything about the...

First Attempt At Mead...'lil Advice Please

Thanks all who replied. I guess my general plan for a first batch has been approved by the forum. "TOOMANYCOLORS" I believe recommended a base of a "straight varietal". What is a straight varietal? I also liked Kauai_Kahuna's idea of the 2 different yeasts. As far as the bottling, I...

First Attempt At Mead...'lil Advice Please

I've been brewing beer for about a year now and I would like to try a mead. I've had mead a couple of times but it was years ago. I can't even remember if it was still or sparkling. What I would like to do is acquire 5 one gallon carboys and make 4 different one gallon batches so I might be...

    Capping a Champagne Bottle

I wanted to bottle in champagne bottles and got about a hundred for free off of craigslist. Cleaned them up and not knowing what size the mouth was, I tried capping one. No go with the regular size caps. So I go out and get the larger caps and a new bell housing for the red baron capper. I flip...

    Paranoid...maybe just a little

Thanks to all who responded and even to those who read the responses and learned some more as I did. The ESB stays where it is until I get 3 days of equal gravity readings. Then it will be off to secondary. Why?? Just because I haven't done it before and to justify buying the carboys to the...

    Paranoid...maybe just a little

Could I get a few more opinions on the stirring. It's tied at 1 right now. Greg

    Paranoid...maybe just a little

Thanks for all the responses. Since everyone is sitting around watching their beer ferment, may I take this opportunity to ask a couple more questions. 1. So it is ok to give the wort a little stir to possibly liven things up a bit? 2. Will going to a secondary gain me anything in addition...

    Paranoid...maybe just a little

MidWest Classic ESB Extract Kit 6 lbs. Gold liquid malt extract 8 oz. Caramel 40°L 2 oz. Chocolate malt 2 oz. Roasted Barley specialty grains 3.5 oz. of hops Irish Moss Munton's 6 gm dry yeast. I really like Bitter beer, so it was a logical first choice for me.

    Paranoid...maybe just a little

Pitched my first batch of ESB on saturday at 6:00pm. Temp in basement 68 degrees. Started seeing a bubble every 3-4 seconds 24 hours later. 24 hours after that, no more bubbles (or so it appears). Just left it alone for a few days and today I took a gravity of 1.015. Of course being a noob I...

    Kettle with/without Spigot

Income tax is back! Time to buy my starter kit. I've decided to buy a 7.5 gallon kettle from Midwest. Do I have them drill the hole(s) for a spigot (and maybe a temp gauge)? Do the benefits out weigh the cost? And is it something I'm going to wish I had further down the road? Greg

    Brewing Kitchen Design

Thanks everyone for your ideas. It sounds like the consensus is heavy duty shelving. I was already going to have cabinets, but I think I'll replace some of the cabinets with the shelving. I'll post pics as work gets done.
