What did you learn this week?

I learned you apparently aren't supposed to mill Barley Flakes with the rest of your grains. Oops. Hopefully my first Partial Mash comes out OK. I also learned that it is possible to smack a "Smack Pack" too hard. The guy at the store said to slam it down on the counter, you can't break the...

Once and for all...is a secondary neccesary??

I try not to drink either actually. personally I don't see a reason to bother with a secondary.

what is the strangest ingredient you've seen in beer?

Ok....I'm not sure I would be able to try one with rocky mountain oysters. I don't think I would go hotter than a Habanero in a beer either.

what is the strangest ingredient you've seen in beer?

Pretty straight forward.. What is the strangest ingredient you have seen added to beer, or maybe added yourself? One caveat: it has to have been a drinkable brew. One of the ingredients that has surprised me, though I have yet to sample a beer containing them, is jalapenos or chillis. I'm...

Once and for all...is a secondary neccesary??

From what I can tell, being fairly new to brewing myself, this is by and large a "Coke vs Pepsi" type of thing. By and large it seems like secondary is not needed, though there are a couple of reasons why you might want to. One is to harvest yeast from the primary. Another is if you have some...

Hi! New AG brewer looking to get a setup for 500 ish

I went with a ten gal cooler simply because it would likely take me longer to outgrow. The cost for the fittings to make it into a mlt is the same if the cooler is five gal or ten. So it came down to 60 for a ten gal mlt or 40 for a five gal mlt. I don't see myself doing anything larger than...

    Question about contactors

Yes. For the most part, only motors would provide an inductive load in our use. Unless you are making a system with an inductive cook top or a huge motor, I don't see too many configurations exceeding an inductive load rating.

    Question about contactors

In short, inductive loads use magnetic fields, such as motors, relays, solenoids, etc. inductive loads can cause what is called blowback voltage, that is, a voltage surge that is created by a collapsing magnetic field. Resistive loads do not use magnetic fields and have no risk of blowback...

Hi! New AG brewer looking to get a setup for 500 ish

Just to comment... Stainless steel is a very poor heat conductor compared to copper. Yea, it looks cool, but it won't cool nearly as well as its copper counterpart. For a given amount of time, copper will conduct nearly 30 times the amount of heat. In other words, it will take more time to...

Propane- what would blow me up?

Here is a tip if you ate going to continue to use that set up: Mix a solution of dish soap and water, it should be fairly thick, 3 parts water to one part detergent or so. Pour this solution on the tank, the hose, and all connections when you are running, especially after changing the tank or...

Hi! New AG brewer looking to get a setup for 500 ish

I was going to comment that getting into all grain isn't that expensive, and that 500 was a LOT of money until I noticed you say you didn't want to use a cooler for your MLT. you can probably still make a cheap setup with stainless. About $100 for a kettle, $30 for fittings, and another $20...

    Drinking my 1st homemade beer

My first brew is getting to the point where it is really "drinkable". It has now been in bottles for 2 weeks. Took my first sample of second brew (Oatmeal Stout) and it wasn't too bad. This was the first one that I experimented a bit with, and i added a pint of honey to the boil at 2...

HBT dictionary...or commonly misspelled brew terms

For me, personally, I tend to question the knowledge of someone who makes simple grammatical errors in their posts. If someone doesn't know the difference between our and are (this one really bugs me--they aren't even PRONOUNCED the same!) how can they be expected to know the difference between...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it Aluminium instead of Aluminum as well?

    I built my first Keezer

Specifically what I am trying to see is how you access the freezer/kegs inside. It doesn't really look like the top is attached to the freezer lid.

    I built my first Keezer

Beautiful man! Can you post a picture of the open door from a few steps back? I love the idea of one of these that is nice enough to work as a piece of furniture and not just be a fridge/freezer with taps on it.

    homemade jerky

I actually prefer to use my smoker for drying my jerky. It is big enough to put a full 5 pounds in at a time (I make sliced Jerky) and I can impart a little bit of smoke flavor. In recipes that call for liquid smoke, I actually leave the liquid smoke out and add more smoke. You can also use...

Home alone food- Cabbage Potato Soup

I live alone (unless you count my dog) so everything is a "home alone"meal. Though I do like to make my chili extra hot. Habanero peppers and ghost chiles are common ingredients. I've actually been making a soup a little similar to yours lately, only no potatoes. Cabbage, celery, tomato...

    Marbles as a Mash Filter

I second this. They did an episode on making marbles on dirty jobs.... They basically recycle glass, however there is no need to worry about sanitization or even using clean glass. The idea is anything they don't want won't withstand the heating process. They also use different materials to...
