    Which hops to buy?

It's not clear from their website, but these hops are from last year's harvest right? They're discounting them to make room for this year's harvest which just started?

    Are we overanalyzing?

To those who think ancient beer was just as good as today's beer - okay, the beers they made may have been good, at least the ones for the upper class that weren't the 3-4% ABV ones. But you can't deny the fact that we're going through a beer renaissance today. Never in history have there been...

    heat sources?

    > What?? You should tell them it smells delicious when brewing. It doesn't smell like a brewery, which most people think of smelling like a permanent malty and yeasty smell. The smells from homebrewing smell more like baking bread or roasting grains, and the smells dissipate within 30...

    Effect of UV on krausen?

I think BargainFittings has it right – the blue tub probably heated up a bit during the day and got a slight temperature gradient in the water. The white garbage bags are pretty opaque – I think they would break up any UV light before hitting the carboy, so I’m not too...

    Effect of UV on krausen?

This is not a big deal, but just wondering if anyone knows if light/UV can affect the color of beer, particularly the krausen. I noticed this weird pattern on my stout which is at hour 36 of fermentation. Half of the krausen has big brown bubbles, like the surface of the moon, and the other...

Missed OG by 21 points on first partial mash??

Here are some pictures of my brew day: Patrick Davin's Photos - Brewing Day - Stout | Facebook I didn't get any pictures of the interior of the mash when I was stirring it, but it was fairly dense. Not clumping, but definitely like a thick porridge. All the grain was thoroughly wet and in...

Missed OG by 21 points on first partial mash??

Actually, post #4 in that thread is from a different user than the original poster. The user in post #4 said he did sparging, but poster #1 did not say he did it. Part of the difficulty with BIAB I think is that there's so little clarity on what the BIAB process actually is. There are only a...

Missed OG by 21 points on first partial mash??

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the grain was crushed. The 2-row was a medium crush and the specialty grains were a fine crush. Right, I probably should have used a higher water to grain ratio but I had a hard time finding the ratio in the writeups I found of BIAB. Also I wouldn't have been able to...

Missed OG by 21 points on first partial mash??

How is this even possible? Just finished a 4 hour brew session and took my gravity, and I'm stunned. I totally expected bad efficiency on my first partial mash using the brew in the bag technique -- but not this bad. I was hoping for 70% efficiency, but according to BeerSmith I got 35%...

Willing to spend on a recipe

These most expensive numbers so far are pretty weak. ;) That's what you get when it's all-grain brewers... from an extract brewer, my most expensive so far is $77.50 for a Dogfish 90 Min clone. I keep cost break-downs of most of my beers, so here's the break-down if you're interested...

    Trippel IPA

Yup, the Trip is a great beer; I had it at the Elysian's brewpub a couple months ago but now they only have the Trip II and Trip III on tap. The Trip II is like a lower ABV version of Trip I - it's a cross between a Belgian pale and a northwest IPA. The Trip III is a Belgian sour ale I believe.

    Favorite Brewing Music

Nah, I like to play Pink Floyd when I brew. Makes me feel very creative and sets the mode for a chill brewing session. Nothing can go wrong when Floyd is on (I say that half in jest).

To Colorado's Finest Climbers - And Brewers. Brewing on all 53 14ers.

That's pretty amazing. I'm surprised they did all grain instead of using extract. I don't live in Colorado, so can't help you out, but seems like if you do small batches - 1 or 2 gallons - it's not too bad. The main challenge is getting it back down. Do most 14'ers in Colorado have snow on...

    Dumpster diving for bottles

Also by the way, people might look at you strange when they see someone who doesn't look like a bum rooting through recycling. But don't worry, that's half the fun - if they stare at you, just say I'm a homebrewer! Often that leads to a funny conversation.

    Dumpster diving for bottles

Yup! I dumpster dived when I needed bottles for my first batch. Now I have a pretty good pipeline and a friend who saves bottles for me, but I think I'm going to have to do it again this week because I'm building up from about a 5 gallon pipeline to a 20 gallon pipeline. :-) It's not really...

Micromanging Brew Process when there are two of you

I would give him another chance, and sounds like maybe you're a little too serious about your brewing. Remember, it's only beer :) A few degrees off target temp probably isn't going to make a difference in the end, and a couple boilovers are part of the learning process. You probably know the...

    Storing beer at 100 F

Ok, I guess I'll just have to deal with it. I moved my batch that is conditioning now down into the building's garage this morning. That's 82 F. Also, it's a watermelon wheat so even if it made some fruity esthers in the first 2 days at 100 F, that's not terribly wrong for the style. I...

    Storing beer at 100 F

Seattle is going through a heat wave, and my top-floor, sunny apartment is hitting 100 F during the day and 94 F at night. I expect it to stay at 100 F for about 6 days. I have about 2 1/2 batches of beer in my closet (12.5 gallons). One batch I just started bottled conditioning 2 days ago, and...
