    Sierra Nevada Anniversary Ale 09

I understand where you're coming from but I urge you to reconsider how you view beer and value in what you pay for beer. Why is wine more worthy of high prices? You said yourself you'd be willing to pay $16 for a bottle of wine. Why? A 750ml bottle of wine is about the same size as a 22oz...

What a wonderful night for a beer.

We drink beer at the summer kickball league I'm in too, but at one game last month a police officer actually came and made people dump out their beer! Can you believe that? Lame. It wasn't due to any complaints, I think he was just driving by and decided to investigate.

    Need help with pre-boil gravity

Huh? That's what a pre-boil gravity measurement is. A hydrometer reading. Brewin_CRAZY, I'm not stressing, really. (see my last paragraph in my original post). I just have a scientific approach to brewing (as I've found many other engineers that brew do) and want to figure this out. My post...

Pliney the Elder at Naked City Seattle WA

It's also on tap at Uber Tavern currently. Also Collin's Pub is getting it soon... I don't know if they may have tapped it already. http://www.uberbier.com/ NEW BEERS ON TAP AS OF SEPTEMBER 28, 2009 - Russian River Pliny the Elder

    Need help with pre-boil gravity

First, a warning this has a fair amount of math geekery. So stop reading if you don't like that. I just finished my 4th partial mash using the BIAB technique. After the 1st one I started taking pre-boil gravities (PBG) so I could see how effective the mash was and be able to adjust the...

My labels: Applied and sitting happy

Very nice label design. That's the most professional looking homebrew label I've seen so far I think (and I looked at 20 or 30 before designing my labels, which sadly don't look as pro as your's). What program did you use? Only thing missing from your labels is an area to put ABV, IBU...

    Shipyard Pumpkin Ale

My favorite pumpkin ale is Elysian Night Owl (Seattle microbrewery). Admittedly I haven't tried many others though. Elysian also makes an imperial pumpkin spice called The Great Pumpkin. Haven't tried that yet.

What are you brewing this weekend?

I'm brewing a vanilla chocolate porter. The vanilla beans aren't arriving till next week, but that's ok cause they're going in secondary. I also need to bottle my Arrogant Bastard tomorrow.

    Sam Adams Halloween Beer?

    > So me and the GF are at TGI Friday's last night Well there's your first mistake. I don't even need to read the rest of your post... ;)

One reason why I'll never live in Alabama..

I wonder why they decided to set the new cap at 13.9% ABV. Seems like a kind of random number. Here's my transcription of the Montgomery representative Alvin Holmes from 5:45 in the video: Yo what's wrong with the beer we got? I mean the beer we got drank pretty good don't it? I...

    StarSan Bottle Measuring Thing

Thank you for this post! This has been bugging me for a long time. I tried tilting the bottle every which way, with caps open or closed. Even had a friend try to figure it out as well and neither of us could get it. We didn't think of squeezing it. Seems so obvious now, but they should really...

    Free hops at Fremont Oktoberfest

Thank you Michelob! (Never thought I'd say that...!) The Michelob area at Fremont Oktoberfest last night had chests full of 0.5oz bags of Hallertau hops (nitrogen packed I assume). I got about 6-8 bags, so now I have 3 or 4 oz of free Hallertau. I doubt there were many other...

Things I learned going from Home to Nanobrewer...

Great post, thanks. I'd be interested in more details on bullet 9 - Sales. You started out selling to chefs and caterers. Kegs, not bottles I assume? What chefs would want to put a no-name brand of beer in their restaurant? That seems like the biggest challenge to me. Are you selling in...

    Great HOP pricing going on!

Not really (I don't feel bad). That's the nature of the beast if you're going to get into the agriculture business. Crop prices can swing wildly from year to year. For a moment I felt bad for Puterbaugh farms for having to sell their hops at such cheap prices but then I realized there's no...

    Great HOP pricing going on!

The great thing about living in Washington? 1 day shipping times from Puterbaugh farms :) I placed the order last Tuesday 9/8, so it did take them about 5 days to ship out, but the overnight UPS is great. SEATTLE, WA, US 09/15/2009 8:26 A.M. OUT FOR DELIVERY...

    Do brewers get drunk alone?

As a homebrewer who is single, it's almost impossible not to drink alone. But I usually only get drunk alone when I've had a really bad week, or just haven't been drunk in a while and want to remember what it feels like. The reason I say it's hard not to drink alone if you're a homebrewer and...

How common are infected kegs with commercial microbreweries?

Oh. I was thinking nasty lines would still be overpowered by the beer from the keg, which would be a much larger volume of liquid than whatever lacto quantities were in the lines. Though, I did get one of the first draws from the keg so that probably doesn't help either.

How common are infected kegs with commercial microbreweries?

Yeah, I thought about the lines/taps, but these kegs were for a one-time event and I don't think they would leave kegs hooked up overnight at a stadium. So if they hooked the lines up just an hour or so before the event, that wouldn't be enough time to contaminate the keg. I'd be surprised to...

How common are infected kegs with commercial microbreweries?

So I was at my work's annual company meeting today where we had free beer at the end of it. I got a cup (it was at the baseball stadium, so the beer comes in plastic cups) of Redhook ESB and immediately noticed it tasted odd. The taste was slightly sour, and slightly lighter in body and less...

Missed OG by 21 points on first partial mash??

To follow up on this, my second attempt at BIAB partial mash got much better results. 70 to 75% efficiency rather than 35% efficiency! The things I changed were: - smaller grain bill (5 lbs - 4 lb US 2-row + 1 lb Crystal 80). - higher water/grain ratio. 2.0 qt/lb - "dunk sparged" in 1.5g...
