    What was your gateway?

I remember drinking a Stoudt's American Pale Ale and thinking it was the most bitter thing I'd ever had. Now I throw back Nugget Nectar and anything Stone and triple IPAs like they're water.

    Bourbon barrel!

No they actually aged their bourbon in it. 3 gallons, $76. They also had 7 and 15 gallon ones for sale. Tuthilltown Spirits, look them up, you can buy the barrels online. I e-mailed with a question about sanitizing the barrel (whether they had already done that) and my e-mail was forwarded...

    Bourbon barrel!

(sorry for blurriness) The beer for my wedding. 10 gallons will be the final volume; 3 gallons went into that little bourbon barrel, the remaining 2 gallons from that carboy went into a little 2 gallon carboy. The other half of the beer is still in primary fermentation. It's a huge imperial...

Can a hoebrewer make REALLY high IBU beer?

A friend and I used a pound of hops in a triple IPA recipe with an OG of 1.090. Calculated IBU of something like 280. Is that what you're going for? We used all pellets, around 20 lbs of grain in the mash, added 7 grams of calcium carbonate in the mash and into the sparge water as well...

    Best beer blend.....

We Troegs types blend Dreamweaver and Mad Elf (around the holidays when Elf is available) and make Mad Dreams.

    When brewing a triple IPA

I normally wouldn't do a silly IPA. I, too, think they're overdone. But, this is in the spirit of competition, why not?! As for numbers, our calculated final ABV will be 11.4%, and calculated IBU is 287. It'll either be the best, hoppiest beer ever, or totally effing undrinkable.

    When brewing a triple IPA

Be sure to use a pound of pellet hops in your boil. Hop soup is good for you. Seriously, what led anyone to believe that a triple IPA was a good idea? 25 lbs. of grain, 16 oz. of hops in the boil. I'm brewing it with a friend for a competition (yea, a bunch of triple IPAs, the judges mouths...

Harrisburg to Philly - Brewery Tour Plan

Let me know when you're coming to Troegs, if I'm not really busy (unlikely, but you never know!) I can show you around. Bube's is ok, the ambiance of that place is almost cooler than the beer...their stuff is really hit or miss, I would save them for another trip. Stoudt's is a classic, and...

    What are you drinking now?

New Holland Full Circle Kolsch-style. Got a bottle for free. Pretty decent. They used Bohemian pilsner malt, judging by the funky malt character.

    Oatmeal Stouts?

Yea, you gotta find some Founder's Breakfast Stout. I am such a fanboy for that beer, it's so tasty.

WL029 Kolsch Ale - anyone use this ? What's your experience

I love that yeast. Tastes wonderful, ferments in all kinds of conditions. When I did my Kolsch, I think I had an OG of about 1.045, so yours is a little low, but whatever, you'll just be able to enjoy more of it before getting silly. I fermented at about 68* for two weeks, hit my FG before...

brass parts on my mash tun

My dad is an electrical engineer, is 62 years old, and is perfectly healthy. To this day, he uses his mouth to straighten out the solder (yes, lead-core solder) right before applying it to a joint, because one hand has the roll of solder, and the other hand has the soldering iron in it, so he's...

Show of hands, who hates acetyalhyde?

*raises hand* Third batch now I've done that is just a glass of green apples. Grrr. I'm aware the cause, just can't seem to get that yeast happy enough. Next time I'm adding actively fermenting beer directly to my carboy, in addition to pitching yeast. And shaking the absolute hell out...

Reproducing the same beer over and over

Congrats, you've figured out the single hardest thing to do in the brewing world, homebrewing or otherwise. Except lautering a roggenbier. If you can do that easily, you're probably a robot, or god.

    Competition Experiences & Advice

Competitions are usually about style categories. If you're not worried about placing, it doesn't really matter, but if you want to get a medal, brew to style. As for most competitive, popular categories. IPA, stout, pale ale, stuff like that, stuff everyone and their mother brews.

Wedding brew day - planning blog

The reception hall my fiancee and I have is the third floor of an awesome restaurant. We told them that were bringing bottles of beer we had made ourselves to give to guests. They said no. Then we said, "But there will be little tags around them telling people what table they sit it. It's...

    I actually never liked beer!

I didn't like beer until someone handed me a Sam Adams Boston Lager. Seriously. I should do their commercials.

    YOUR Top 5 Imperial Stouts!

Funny this thread should come up...my friends and I just held an "Imperial Stout Throwdown" where we all brought different stouts and tried them all side-by-side. We did this with barleywines too...both ended rather drunkenly. My top 5: 1. Founder's Canadian Breakfast Stout 2. Bell's...

Drinking at a brewery (protocol question)

I have been to brewpubs where the servers knew nothing, and I've been to a brewpub where the bartender was the brewer. Can go either way!

Oldest U.S. Beer Maker, Yuengling, Eyes Expansion

It's not as good as beer from some other smaller craft breweries, but definitely better than yellow fizzy beer. I have drunk a lot of Yuengling in my day, especially in college. The commercials are serious, we PA people have always been able to walk up to any bar and say "lager, please" and...
