    Summer Beer Help

Hey guys, taking my first shot at recipe formulation from the ground up. I want to make a light, but substantive summer beer. Here's what I have so far: 60% Pilsner Malt 20% Rye Malt 20% Wheat Malt I will probably use Cascade as the bittering hop, some Amarillo at flameout and to dry...

Help with a Kettle Dip Tube

Hey guys, I was looking for some help with a kettle dip tube. I just installed one of the weldless bulkheads from weldlessfittings.com. I installed it as low as I could, but i feel like there is going to be a decent amount of loss. Normally I wouldn't care about the loss as much, but I am...

    Austin Homebrew Brew Kettle Advice

Hello. I recently decided to upgrade my brew kettle. I ordered the 10 gallon megapot from Austin Homebrew on Sunday, and asked them to drill the two holes for a ball valve and a thermometer (I got the weldless kits for Xmas). The price wasn't bad, around $145. I really want to brew my...

    First Time AG Process

Thanks for the tips guys. Forbein11, I think I am getting a false bottom for xmas for the cooler, would this effect the amount of water you use to mash or the amount you would expect the grain to absorb. Thanks for the math, that helps alot, I was playing around with software and was...

    First Time AG Process

Hey guys, I have been brewing extract + grians or about a year, and am making the leap into AG. My question is about my process for the first time, I just wanted to make sure this sounds correct after reading lots of threads and listening to podcasts. I am converting the 10 gallon Igloo for...

gonna start my dopple soon need tips

I made the austin homebrew kit, it got down to 1.015. I used german bock yeast, a lager yeast. Fermented at 50F, lagered at 50F too. Would have liked to have gone lower, but didn't have temp control that could go that low at the time. It's carbonating now in the keg, but even before it went...

    Traveling To Steamboat Springs

We are flying into Denver, so we will be driving from Denver to SBS. We are staying in SBS for a week, hopefully doing a ton of hiking, so will probably be heading over to Rocky Mountain National Park, but I can't imagine we will be hitting any other cities.

    Traveling To Steamboat Springs

Great resource, I hadn't seen that site before. Will be a nice tool as I travel around the country. I wasn't expecting a super long list, but I thought I would give it a shot. You wouldn't think we would have a large brewery range here in Portland, Maine, but somehow we actually have enough...

Looking for Lambic/Gueuze in New Hampshire

I know there are a bunch of choices at RSVP in Portland, but that is a bit of a drive. Also our LHBS here in Portland has a big bottled beer collection, has a few rare lambics to choose from, but again, a bit of a drive.

Thanks for the quick response. Just a quick question, what does the jack push down on? Plywood? Also, what is the frame made out of?

    Dorm Fridge Fermentation Chamber

I probably overdid it a bit. I had everything except for the foam lying around, so I figured why not? Thermally I can't imagine it would be much difference without the plywood, so they're probably not that much difference in the end.

    Dorm Fridge Fermentation Chamber

Hey guys, just thought I would put up some pics of my fermentation chamber I just built, just to have another one out there in case it helps anyone with ideas or another way to skin a cat. I used a scavenged dorm fridge to cool the thing. In the summer it is holding 65 like a champ for ales...

    Malty taste appearing in keg

Thanks for the tip. I think next month I may try to get my hands on pot to handle full boils, just seems to be easier, and eventually when I move to all grain it will be good to have.

    Malty taste appearing in keg

I will give the late extract method a shot. I have done that a couple times, on beers that I was looking for a lighter color on, but I can't remember if those ones had the malty taste, so it is definitely worth a shot. Any suggestions on what amount to delay until the late extract addition...

    Malty taste appearing in keg

I heat the water to 155F, steep grains for 20-25 minutes in a grain bag, then remove the grain bag, bring wort to a boil and add extract at that point. Pretty standard I think. Just a quick thought, would a more concentrated boil have anything to do with it? I only boil about two gallons of...
