lyle's golden syrup - anything else I can use?

sorry - ignore my second post. I just realized that I have the ability in BeerSmith to actually choose what type of extract I want to convert the AG recipe to. I accidentally "chose" Lyle's in my calculation, that is why it came out like that. I will recalc it with Pale Liquid Extract instead.

lyle's golden syrup - anything else I can use?

ummmm... Is Lyle's golden Syrup just a "little flavor additive," or can it be used as the bulk ingredient like a normal LME? Does this conversion sound OK? I just have never heard of this "golden syrup" thing... the AG recipe I found was this: 11 lb pilsner 1 lb munich 1 lb wheat...

lyle's golden syrup - anything else I can use?

I calc'd a brewsmith AG recipe into a partial mash recipe. It tells me to use "lyle's golden syrup," but I can't find it for sale on the midwestern supplies online shop, nor the austin homebrew supply online shop. Is the "lyle's golden" just another way of saying: "generic light liquid malt...

a question about boil size and flavor

thanks for the help. looks like i should try to find a bigger pot.

a question about boil size and flavor

I brew in the partial-mash style. My brew pot is 3 gallons, so I end up doing the boil in about 2.5 gal of water, cool it down, then add the 2.5 gal of wort to the fermentor, and top off with enough clean water to get me to 5 gallons. Does it matter that I only create 2.5 gallons of wort...

anyone have any tricks to removing bottle markings?

I did this, and also used a little razor blade that I bought at the drug store that removes stickers from car windows and other flat surfaces. It is just a normal razor blade with a good plastic holder so your hand doesn't slip and the blade stays locked in. After I did a 1 hour soak, I used...

    The size of the secondary

I just bought myself a 6 gal glass corboy, and put about 4.5 gal of IPA in there for 5 days as a secondary. Bottled it up last night, and did a little taste test with the hydrometer liquid. I had no problems and the beer tasted good.

    Help with Triple

B-dub - can you clarify a little bit here? you said: "If you ever have a stuck Belgian again the T58 dry yeast is a good bet to bring the FG down because the temp range for it is much wider than 3787 or 530." Do you mean that you add dry yeast to the wort after you have discovered that you...

    Witbier Grand Cru (EX)

So did this turn out like a dark, fruity, strong belgian? I'm new to homebrewing so I have trouble recognizing how a beer will look and taste just from the malt and hop profile... Maybe you could add a quick description of how it tasted. Thanks.

Reminder: 3 weeks of bottle conditioning is a MINIMUM

I have my second beer in the primary right now, which is a Stone IPA clone. It has an OG 1.078. I think this would this be considered a big beer? I will be dry hopping, and from what i have read, dry hopping tends to lose flavor with age... I'm planning on doing 2 weeks in the primary...

    Question about yeast

I understand what you mean about too much malt. I had accidentally added too much malt, realized my mistake, so i tried to compensate by adding more hops. I figured that since it is an IPA, more hops couldn't really hurt the beer.

    Question about yeast

So this is my second beer that I brewed yesterday (a Stone IPA clone). I accidentally put it a little too much malt extract, so i figured that I should RDWHAHB and just add a little more hops to balance it out. Anyway, the recipe told me that my OG should be 1.06, and i was very diligent...

adding tap water to cooled wort - OK?

I just pre boiled and cooled down 3 gal of water to 78 degrees. i'll take the safe route this time, then just buy spring water next time.

adding tap water to cooled wort - OK?

I am about to start brewing an IPA in about an hour or so. I am going to make the wort, cool it, then add it to the fermenting bucket. I will then need to add more water to bring the total volume up to 5 gallons. I am planning on adding tap water straight to the bucket of cooled wort, then...

    Dry Hopping Questions

I am thinking about doing an IPA for my second beer. The recipe I am looking at tells me that I need: 1 oz of Centennial whole hops (dry hops) .5 oz of Chinook whole hops (dry hops) I'm not sure if my local homebrew shop carries whole hops? Can I just substitute pellets of same amounts...

    Just racked my first batch..

I just finished bottling my first beer, so I am inexperienced like you. i will comment that my boil went just like yours: not an aggressive bubbling experience but slight bubbles and more motion of the liquid. I wonder if this is how it is supposed to be?

I think I bottled too early

My krausen had dropped. the airlock was not bubbling. The beer was very cloudy, however. Any ideas when i should try to crack open my first beer for the first taste? 2 weeks? 4 weeks?

I think I bottled too early

oops. forgot to mention that! OG was 1.06, my FG on day 7 was 1.022.
