    Cheap compact wort pump

To sterilize the pump and plate chiller. I want to chill as fast as possible after the boil to limit DMS so I sterilize during the boil. I guess I could sterilize them as the boil is starting then leave them connected the whole time. What is your workflow for sterilizing the pump and chiller at...

    Cheap compact wort pump

I was recirculating boiling fluid so that fits the bill. I probably buy a new one for my HERMs when I finish it to recirc in the HLT. I’m going to get a chugger for the boil kettle so I can recirc boiling fluid.

    Show us your Kegerator

Just finished this today. It’s an Insignia unit that I can put (3) 5g and (1) 3g ball lock kegs in with the gas outside. Gotta shorten the lines up though as it pours too slow.

    Cheap compact wort pump

Earlier I posted that I thought the power supply went out. I was incorrect, power supply is fine but the pump is dead. When I have the pump disconnected I get 24v out of the power supply as expected. When I connect the pump nothing happens then a couple seconds later the power supply light will...

    Cheap compact wort pump

I’ve been using one of these pumps and the power supply went out today. The light on it cycles on and off, you can hear a capacitor whine with it. I’m using one of the supplies similar to the below 24v 3a version. Speed is controlled with a PWM dc motor speed controller. The first...

Used plate chiller corrosion, clean with oxyclean?

The outside is what brought up the concern. I put vinegar in it for 5 minutes and it came out very blue which confirmed my suspicion. I then ran 5.1 pH water through it which should be similar to wort and got light blue water in the post above. Since then I have soaked it in vinegar for 5-15...

Used plate chiller corrosion, clean with oxyclean?

Good suggestion on the recirculation and hot solution. Definitely a green tint. Maybe this isn’t going to be saved.

Used plate chiller corrosion, clean with oxyclean?

This morning I acidified water to 5.1 pH which should be similar to wort. I let it sit in the chiller for 30 minutes. I dumped it into a glass jar and couldn’t detect any blue coloring, the water tasted sharp but I assume that is the acidity, I don’t taste copper in it. It makes me feel better...

Used plate chiller corrosion, clean with oxyclean?

Duda responded to my email on the chiller. They suggested soaking in vinegar for 5 minutes, rinsing really well then flushing with lye, PBW or baking soda to neutralize. They said the vinegar needs to be flushed well or it will make the problem worse. When I drained the vinegar it was...

Used plate chiller corrosion, clean with oxyclean?

It actually seems very clean. Nothing comes out when I flush it and flow is great. My only concern is hidden green copper corrosion which I understand to be poisonous. I plan on recirculating the last 15 minutes of boil through it and will be using a hop spider so it will be sterilized that way...

Used plate chiller corrosion, clean with oxyclean?

I did a little more searching and it seems acid cleaners are best. Think a cup of vinegar in a gallon of water recirculated for a while would do it?

Used plate chiller corrosion, clean with oxyclean?

I just got a used plate chiller and there is a little green corrosion on the outside. What should I used to clean any possible corrosion from the inside? Will oxyclean work or should I stop at the store and get PBW?

    Water profile

I did the additions but used 6.4 mL of lactic acid in the mash instead of the phosphoric acid. I took a sample of the mash 10 minutes in, let it cool and measured the pH to be 5.5. The sample was a mix of the wort and grain. My goal was 5.35 so I was still high. How would I try and compensate...

I have the cereal killer and a drill from harbor freight. Just got it a few months ago and have done ~10 batches. Works great.

Dr Meter PH002, pH meter storage

I bought a Dr Meter PH002 pH Meter from Amazon in early July. There was no mention in the manual about storage but I have been doing some reading that seems to point to all pH meters needing to be stored in solution. I recall the manual stating to rinse with distilled water and let dry. Should...

Rectangular manifold spacing, where to measure from

I am going to be switching to fly sparging this weekend and would like to make sure my manifold spacing is correct. The walls of the rectangular cooler are slightly tapered and the bottom is curved. Where do most measure for the manifold to wall spacing?

Sounds good. Thanks for the input

    Water profile

I could certainly do that. I've just been batch sparging. I have read that pH doesn't matter as much for batch sparging. Do you think I could skip the acid in the sparge water?
