Cheap (free) vacuum packer for hops

Thanks! I was using those zip-lock vacuum bags with the little electric pump, but I had about 1 in 3 lose their seal on me, and for some reason I seem unable to seal zip top bags of any sort properly (I catch a lot of grief about it from SWMBO).

Cheap (free) vacuum packer for hops

Whoops: I meant to put this in the DIY forum, sorry about that! If a mod wants to move it, please do so! I've been trying to come up with a way to vacuum pack bulk hops that didn't require a $100 vacuum sealer (or even a $30 jar sealing kit) and came up with this method. Thought someone else...

Cheap & Easy 10 Gallon Rubbermaid MLT Conversion

Thanks for the input! It seemed to drain water just fine but I wasn't sure if it would effect the formation of the grain bed. On further thought, the draining wort should just pull grain to wherever it needs to be to create a good filter bed.

    Hops storage question

Huzzah! Gonna make a nice little session APA next week. Looked at the date and it's been 6 months (!) so I'll chuck all 3oz into the boil as the equivalent of an ounce of 7% Perle and call it a day. Thanks very much! The next bulk buy of hops (hopefully in a couple weeks) is getting...

    Hops storage question

I had a few ounces of Hallertauer (3%) in a vacuum packed freezer bag that lost its vacuum at some point. So it's been stored in the freezer in, basically, a ziplock bag for ~5 months. Is it ruined or can I still use it? Has it lost some of its AA value? I am happy to err on the side of over...

Cheap & Easy 10 Gallon Rubbermaid MLT Conversion

Made this with a 5g Igloo brand cooler (I only brew 3g batches most of the time, and I can do 5g batches of session beers if I need/want to, so it works for me). Had to use lots of extra washers to get a tight seal so I am assuming the walls are thinner on my cooler than the 10gal Rubbermaid...

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Welp, brewed this batch up tonight. Had some temp issues during mash (strike temp calculator seemed way off, the "rule of thumb" I've read of 5+pounds of grain over desired temp would have been right on) but stay in the 148-158 range, as far as I could tell. Missed my target OG by .003, and...

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

I can't remember what IBU method I built my spreadsheet with, but I'm getting 18 witn a 90 min boil after accounting for the dilution of a partial boil and the hops at 3 and 3.2% AA. I also game up with 1041 but assumed my efficiency to be lower... Figuring on 25 pts per pound per gallon for...

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Can someone double check this mini mash/partial boil conversion for me? Doing a small batch, just 3.5 gal to bring with me on a hunting/camping trip in December. 2 lbs 2-row 1.25 lbs flakes corn .75 lbs flakes rice 1 lbs light DME .5 oz each Liberty and Tettnenger hops S-05 Mash the...

    Pink beer

Ok, the end result was a very delicious fruity, as my wife calls it "girly" beer with a hint of pomegranate flavor but no pinkness at all. It had a faint red hue while in the carboy, but nothing att in the bottles/glass. A day after bottling I found where to buy hibiscus pestles in cheap bulk...

Possible to make a 2+ tower kegerator from 5l mini-kegs?

Did you end up doing this? I am planning the exact same setup using the tap design posted over on Northernbrewer (linked above). I am going to use those DIY taps plus a standard (cheap model) CO2 regulator with 20oz paintball cans of gas. I don't have room for a whole fridge, nor cash for...

    Pink beer

Final update for at least a week or two... not terribly pink, but since I don't use hops bags with my pellets, the wort is always a little murky and brown. I suspect that I shall have to add more colorant as well as a gelatin to clarify it some more (used irish moss while brewing already) on...

    Pink beer

Well, grains were steeped, sparged, and I said f- it and tossed in 8 of the tea bags for the time it took to go from steeping temp to boiling. Smells really nice, and the color is at least pinker than it was before. Looks like only about a half an ounce of herbs in all of the tea bags combined...

    Pink beer

More insane idas.... wife has some pomegranate herb tea bags lying around. Lists the follow ingredients: apple, hibiscus, blackberry leaves, natural pomegranate and other flavors, orange peel, maltic acid, licorice root, natural pom. and apple juice from concentrate. Steeps up really pink. The...

    Pink beer

Hi all - been AWOL for a couple weeks on this... busy with work, school, and of course getting ready for a baby! I'm down to the wire on this one. JUST enough time to brew, bottle, and condition before the due date. Read through all the suggestions, and talked with my LHBS owner and decided on...

    hydrometer readings

1.102 sounds right on for those ingredients and 4 gallons of water. Using 36 gravity points per pound per gallon for LME, 45 for DME, and 22 for crystal malts gives 1.1005 for 4 gallons and 1.073 for 5.

    Pink beer

That's a nice color! I'd like to try to get something like that... I liked the pink head! Again, the "cotton candy pink" was more a target to aim at so as to be as pink as can be... I know it's probably not possible to get to that level of color, but it's the direction I wanted to aim at...

    Pink beer

You mean pomegranate juice, right? Hm... A pomegranate beer could be good. Maybe do a 4 gallon batch of something very light, somewhat weak (as the juice would add some fermentable sugar after being added) and then add a gallon of pomegranate juice during a secondary fermentation. Might come...

    Pink beer

Heh, that was my backup plan. My hope was some combo of very light malt and some grains might give me a nice pink... Cotton candy was a target color to get people thinking PINK and not sort-of-light-reddish. ;) So you think add some color at bottling? For the record, I'm doing this as a...

    Pink beer

I want / need to make a very pink beer. I would say that cotton candy pink would be the target, but anything close to that would work. I recently did a strawberry wheat and it didn't come out very pink at all. Any ideas? Need something that will be drinkable around mid-July. Thanks!
