First Brew - Scared of Busting Bottles

I think one pitfall of ready these types of boards frequently is that it tends to overemphasize problems that "may" happen. We don't generally post comments like "Batch #9 and still no bottle bombs" or "I don't think this batch is infected". As Revvy said, people have been doing this for quite...

How long did you extract brew before going to All Grain?

14 years......with a 12+ year gap. Started with extract in college and brewed 4 or 5 batches. Didn't even know that all grain was an option. Got back in to the hobby last spring and have done 6 batches of extract. Will probably stick with extract for this year and focus on getting better at...

Newb question for higher gravity fermentation

+1 on waiting - let it finish and clear for a few more days, then to secondary. also +1 on leaving the vanilla bean out. Your own statement that you have never had a strong blonde with vanilla should be your clue. You might end up with 5 gallons of something you won't like. Finish the brew as...

    Airlock fluids

Another vodka user here. Anything that keeps the nasties out should work though. Considering the cost of vodka that you mentioned, I would go with starsan. I will quate what I have read here often - "Don't fear the foam".

    Something to ponder

I shall raise my glass today in celebration of civilization, and beer :mug:

What are you getting for Christmas (Beer related)

My MIL gave me a 32qt brew kettle and IC from Austin Homebrew Supply. My wife gave me Radical Brewing. Looking forward to February when I can start brewing again :ban:

    How many gallons this year?

35 gallons. Didn't get going until April and had to stop in October due to ankle surgery. I plan to double that next year by averaging at least one 5 gallon batch per month with a little extra in the spring and fall. I want to nail down a house cream ale and a house IPA.

Figured out what this batch tastes like.

I had a similar problem with brew #4. It was an Amber Ale and just tastes bad. Some of my buddies and I decided it tastes like beer mixed with yogurt and sourdough bread starter. I couldn't stand to dump it and couldn't stand to drink it. I have used it to make beer bread that is incredible. It...

    HBS in the Denver area...

Another vote for The Brew Hut. I make the trip from Highlands Ranch without hesitation. The are a great resource. Great question about local clubs. I haven't heard of any but would be interested. My neighbor brews, as do a few coworkers. Maybe we could start our own club in the south metro.

So, what have you got set back to bust out on Thanksgiving?

First opening of a Caramel Vanilla Cream Ale. Will be at 3 weeks in the bottle so it should be good to go. It is my first personal recipe so I am hopeful that it turns out.

    Vanilla Flavor Cream Ale

My LHBS helped me put together a Caramel Vanilla Cream recipe that is going on two weeks in the bottle right now. I used 2 beans, split and cut (4 pieces per bean) then soaked in about 1/4 cup of rum during the boil time. The rum and beans were then added to the primary. Smelled great...

    New member from Denver area

I am new to the forum and hoping to get back in to brewing. Did my first batch about 15 years ago during college. Made quite a few batches until kids came along. I am tiring of the beers I can find in the stores, so I am ready to get going on my own again. I plan to find a good IPA to start...
