Wow! Thanks for calling that to my attention. I shop a lot at MoreBeer. Guess I've been snoozing! Last I checked, the combined cost was about $99.

Under $100 Wort pump with SS head

For some time now, I've kept my eyes open for a low cost wort pump for 5 gallon batches. Most pumps in the price range my price range (under $100) don't have a stainless steel pump head. I am trying to reduce plastic in my system and process, so SS is an obvious choice. Williams brewing has...

    Schwarzbier recipe help

Reversing amount of Choc and Black sounds like a good strategy. Even debittered black malt can be a little sharp in some beers.

    Schwarzbier recipe help

Time can make quite a difference, but not always. It is my experience that fermentation issues often have a permanent effect on the beer flavor and aroma. It might clean up, it might not. Let us know how it turns out.

    Schwarzbier recipe help

Yeast could definitely be the issue with your first batch. I harvest and pitch from slurry all the time, but any factors that can stress the yeast can affect the next batch fermented with it. I agree with your thinking that you should re-brew and ferment with fresh yeast before making any...

    Toasted Malt

I have never noticed any harshness from freshly toasted malt or grain. That is usually a concern when making roasted grains, ie: roasted Barley, Brown malt, chocolate or Black malt. I routinely toast some malt or flaked grains for some of my darker beer, to add a bit of toasted, nutty flavor...

Are Homebrew Ingredients Regulated by the FDA or TTB?

Like food items in your local grocery store, they are regulated by the FDA, basically to insure that they are safe for human consumption. The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Trade Bureau (TTB) would only get involved when you are brewing the beer as a business, and selling it.

    No oxygen dry hopping

With the head space is filled with CO2 from fermentation, there should be no (or minimal) chance of oxidizing the hops. With that setup, if the hops can be oxidized, so can the beer. Great idea, logdrum! Now I'll have to figure out how to do that with my glass carboys.

That's great. I think govregs are very stable, but of course, you do need to get an accurate on the setup guage. How did you vent it?

I'd contact customer service. So far we haven't had any problem with our govregs.

    Never kegged...but I’m gonna

Agreed. Rye has that spicy grainy character that adds an interesting flavor dimension. I like rye, but haven't brewed much with it. My son usually stops by after work for one of my brews, especially on hot days. For some reason, he doesn't like rye. I guess that's one reason I usually don't...

    Never kegged...but I’m gonna

Compared to bottling, I think kegging is a dream. You might want to check at LHBS or online HBS to see what they offer in "kegging kits". They often have deals on starter kegging kits, that may save you some money over buying all items individually. The kegging kits supply most, if not all...

    Drying Hops Idea

:cask:Nate R, when using hops of unknown AA%, I usually like to bitter with hops of a known AA%. That leaves less to guess work. I add +/- 2/3 desired IBU's in FWH, then estimate mid range AA% for the specific variety of unknow AA%. With wet hops, I want to get a good charge of those fresh...
