Just ordered a bunch of stuff!

Nice. I love my 6.5 gallon carboy - I do all my hefe's in it, blowoff tube fits into top perfectly! Welcome to the addiction!

    Slow cooker recipe swap

I like to do a boiled dinner with a slight twist. Basically, use ham, brisket, or a cured pork shoulder or butt. About 4-5 pound size is good. Put about 2 cups of apple juice into the crockpot. Add about 1 cup brown sugar. Add the flavoring packet that comes with the brisket, if any. If...

    Let's Talk Washers and Dryers

Not to jinx you, Yuri, but do a google on Neptune problems, specifically mildew. We have a top loading Neptune that failed it's clutch after about 2 years, it's a funky design that's supposed to be like a top loading front loader (if that makes sense), it has no center agitator. It looked like...

    Fining & Secondary

Don't leave it in there too long, should be fine. I never used to even bother with a secondary, just racked it from primary to a bottling bucket right before bottling. You might consider doing such, too - just use the finings in your primary and when it settles out you can rack to bottling...

    Dry Habing? (as in habaneros)

De-seed beforehand, that and the white stuff inside the peppers is the hottest part. If you can mild it down somewhat you'll get more of the hab flavor and less of the heat.

    Irish Stout Ó Flannagáin Standard

Very nice! Are you using straight CO2 on the keg? I have yet to do a stout but you have me thinking it is higher on the list than it was.

    Filling kegs only half way?

I just dispense from keg into cleaned out 2 liter soda bottles - works well if the beer isn't heavily carbed. If you need more carbing you can buy one of those attachments that goes onto top of all standard 2 liter bottles and force carb it in about 3 minutes with about 50 psi and some good...

    Who drinks thier yeast?

I like the low floc yeast if there isn't too much - mainly hefes, I drink the yeast. But the high floc yeast that comes loose in little balls kind of gross me out, I don't like drinking them.

    Question on furnace/thermostat

Oh, one other question- - if the zone that works is NOT calling for heat, and the zone that isn't working IS calling for heat, does the furnace ever actually kick on?

    Question on furnace/thermostat

Woah, bird. Before you rip the antique thermostat off the wall, hang on. I would guess that you have forced hot water heat. If so, there's circulating pump(s) and solenoid actuated valves that control water flow to each zone. When one of my zones wouldn't come on last year, I peeked around...

    bottling apfelwein in wine bottles?

I think you could do this if you are making a still product vs. carbonated. In my opinion this product needs the extra zing of carbonation, though - so I avoid the wine bottles and just keg it or put it into 2 liter plastic soda bottles and force carb.

    clamping 3/16 tubing

Yes, I had the same issue. I purchased some stainless steel safety wire, and wrapped it tightly around twice, then gave it about 7 twists and cut the "tail". Holding great in my kegerator for about 4-5 months so far. Home Depot/Lowes sells the wire, but it was in a weird spot to find, with...

Has anyone here ever done a Schlitz clone?

I thought BYO magazine had a shlitz clone recipe in it, in one of the last couple of issues.

    Yankee Ingenuity V, anyone?

I'm highly interested, but for about the 3rd time I have another commitment during YE! I'll get to one of these eventually!

Should I use a 1 year old extract kit ?

If the grains weren't crushed, and if the cool dark place was low moisture, you might even get away with using them, too... Assuming you took the original yeast that came w/kit, along w/hops, and put them in fridge right when you received the package - probably used them up already, anyway, just...

What's Brewing This Weekend? Oct. 13-14

I brewed my favorite German hefe recipe last night. Not bubbling away quite yet, but I expect it to take off any time now. Thinking about maybe doing another beer today - SWMBO is out of town - but I'm also tempted to wait for some more hops I've ordered to arrive, to play around a bit...

What's Brewing This Weekend? Oct. 13-14

So is that what you've picked for #50? I am itching to do a German Pils -- something like a Carlsburg (or is it Karlsburg) or Bitburger clone. There's a paucity of German Pils recipes around, I always see Czech Pils recipes. Please share recipe. Oh, I hope it comes out great -- yeah, if you...

    Fining & Secondary

If you don't have a second "primary", yes, do as you stated. It sounds like you don't have a carboy - is either of your containers clear? Clear will help a lot if you're using fining agents, so you can see when it truly has fallen clear. Remember, too, that cold temp will help drop the yeast...
