If you are ordering kits, and plan to brew soon, there is no harm in getting the grain pre-milled. It would take a step out of the process that you wouldn't have to worry about. The main advantage of having your own mill is in being able to buy grain in quantity and not use it right away.

Wow. Although I have had a few components on order 5-6 months now for customers. So, I understand.

I ordered my 35L from Williams Brewing. I also see them at MoreBeer, and have ordered things there. I think that is where I got my whirlpool arm. Other than that, I don't know.

I have the 35L. Last year I was brewing alot, and really couldn't keep up with drinking it fast enough. We were in the lockdown, and didn't have friends over, etc. Now I'm brewing less frequently, and would appreciate the extra capacity. I think about adding 240v to my garage anyways for...

I have only ever had the pump clog due to throwing in loose hops. As far as cleaning the pump goes... You really don't have to take it apart if you have an air compressor handy. Just give it a blast of air down the recirculation tube. They'll blow out. Good luck.

Hey guys. Just checking in. I've not been brewing near as much lately. Kinda went crazy with it last year when I was home more. I've actually bought some commercial beer a few times lately, because I've been out of homebrew. Sad. At any rate, I brewed yesterday. It was just a 5 gallon batch...

German Helles Exportbier Silver Medal 2016 Bluegrass Cup - Dortmunder Export

How did it turn out? I’ll soon be finishing up a keg of the latest batch. It’s the best one yet. I might cry when it’s gone.

It's what is commercially available. No problems with mine so far. But yeah, it is a little flimsy. So I am careful with it. If it breaks, I'll use the fittings and find a different tube. I bought more grain yesterday. Have started up the Robobrew with 5 gal of water, now to decide what to make!

Is your sight glass doing ok?

Something to try, if this happens again, is to use an air compressor to blow the hops out. If you have one, it can save a lot of time. I’ve only had a clogged pump once, but after letting it dry blasted air down the recirculation tube. The hops flew right out. Problem solved.

I could never set mine that tight. The one time I did I had a stuck sparge. So I put it back.

I have a Malt Muncher? It is a 2 roller Kegland product the I purchased from Morebeer. The setting is around .0375”? Whether that is accurate or not I don’t know. I set it halfway between the .025 and .050 settings. I have found that is as tight as I can get it without getting stuck sparges.

That is what I thought at first. Now I open up the valve enough that there is constant flow down the center. This helps maintain temperature by keeping heated wort on top. It's just a matter of how much you open the recirculation valve. I use to keep it so there was just a trickle, to avoid...

My mash never drains that fast. I have the smaller 35L unit, so maybe that makes a difference? My guess is that you could improve efficiency by milling the grain finer. I have my mill dialed in to where the mash drains very slowly, but I’m not getting stuck sparges.

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

How much water did you start with? If the mash is coarse enough, maybe the water never built up enough to the overflow. Not sure that's a problem, as long as you are hitting your target numbers. I guess I have my mill set tight enough that I always have overflow down the center pipe.

I don't leave it wide open. But enough that there is a constant flow down the center.

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

Originally I thought the center pipe was a safety feature, in case of the occasional overflow. So I didn't open up the recirculation valve as much. But now I think it actually is supposed to be part of the process, and have been using it as such.

That's only when you are dumping in grain at the start. Once you mash in, put on the top screen, with the center pipe extending above it. Then, mine came with a milled piece of stainless steel the sits on to the center pipe. Put that on top of the pipe, and push down until it contacts the...

Just to be clear. I put the top screen on during the entire mash. Then put the lid on top, so it is all closed up, and recirculate through the hole in the lid. So there is water/wort on top of the grain bed the entire time. The overflow runs down the center pipe. When mash is done, I lift the...

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

A follow up on the M54 California Lager Yeast. It does have a bit more of a fruity taste. The first batch was the Dortmunder lager, and I didn’t care for it in that one. Saflager 34/70 works better for that beer, as it has a cleaner profile. But after that I used it for a Zombie Dust clone, and...
