    So who's brewing this weekend?

I picked hops yesterday, and added them to the word at flameout.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I'm going to brew this evening. Starting to heat some water. Haven't decided what yet. I've traditionally been an IPA guy, but have been on a lager kick lately. Will probably rack the Dead Guy Ale clone I brewed last week using the Saflager 34/70 yeast cake from the week before. Might try the...

    tap handle suggestions

I have a Shopsmoth and haven't had an opportunity to try out the lathe yet. I'm thinking this would be a first good project at some point. My idea would be to stain the wood different colors to try to approximate beer colors.

German Helles Exportbier Silver Medal 2016 Bluegrass Cup - Dortmunder Export

I kept the previous batch in the keg a while longer, and the bubblegum taste has mostly gone away. It’s quite nice at this point. A really clean taste with hops that shine through. I really like this recipe. In another thread I think we figured out that the bubblegum taste comes from under...

    Scottish Export Ale Recipe Discussion

This one is tasty. Brink is about a 10 minute walk from my house. https://beerandbrewing.com/recipe-brink-duncan-clan-wee-heavy/?fbclid=IwAR1wwNHRbMr5n5FjGRqp9LI4RmB7onQXKamWEM3KcBdBhOpjPg7Fof5YjMg

I always use the recirculation pump. Does the Digiboil have one?

Poll: Do you have, or plan to get, an electric car?

Mine is only bad if she is worried we are going to be late somewhere. Then I hear "let me drive, we'll get there faster".

My car doesn't go that fast. Except when my wife drives.

Poll: Do you have, or plan to get, an electric car?

As a followup to my post above. Today on the way in I set the cruise control to 60mph. Slightly different route. 57 miles all electric, with 7 miles of range leftover. So efficiency was much better both directions, just by slowing down a little. Highway speeds really eat up juice.

    First Lager Slightly Diacetyl

I'm going to try the next one just one with the fermenter just sitting on the basement floor. And pitch plenty of yeast. We haven't had our usual August so far. It's been cooler than July was. It has been very comfortable.

    First Lager Slightly Diacetyl

That's interesting. When I started my first lager, I used 34/70 because I didn't have a way to control temperature. I just sat the fermenter on the basement floor. It would get to the mid 70's. I have since purchased a small kegorator, and have been using that. But it's not as precise...

Poll: Do you have, or plan to get, an electric car?

Around here, people pass and look at you like you are hyper-miling if you go the speed limit! I posted that article partly just to make the point that range is dependent on many factors. The EPA range rating is just an average. Today I drove to a work site which is about 59 miles from my home...

Poll: Do you have, or plan to get, an electric car?

Thought some of you might find this interesting. When we talk about range, it's at highway speeds, etc. For example, these Kona EV's went 620 miles. https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/19/hyundai-kona-ev-drives-1000-kilometers/

    First Lager Slightly Diacetyl

The first batch had this same bubble gum taste, but after letting sit it cleared up. It was more pronounced on the second batch, which is in the keg now. I'm glad to know it's not the yeast. I'm using a small kegorator as a fermentation chamber. It was sitting around 50* for a week or so, and...

    First Lager Slightly Diacetyl

I think that must be it. I only pitched 1 pkg on the first 2 batches. On this latest batch I pitched 2, so hopefully it will be better. I did read lately that Fermentis recommends 1 pkg for ale, and 2 for lager, which is why I made the change. Thanks.

    First Lager Slightly Diacetyl

I am fairly new to lagers, and have been using 34/70 for the last couple batches. I am getting a taste I would call a bubblegum flavor. It has seemed to clear up some in the keg, which has been cold in the fridge. Maybe it's diacetyl? I thought it must be a characteristic of the yeast. This last...

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

So, usually when I sparge with the Robobrew, the top screen is still in. The water usually drains really slow. I just keep a pool of water on top, let it go down, add more. I don’t know if it proper to can this batch sparging, fly sparging, or something else. It’s just a constant puddle of water...

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

I use a sous vide unit to heat my sparge water now. It works well. Previously I would bring 8 gallons to a boil, then draw off 5 into a cooler. It would usually have dropped to almost 170 by the time I needed to sparge. I would add 1 gallon or 2 of cool water to bring the remaining water in the...

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

I assume the new circuit boards have something to do with it. I will check it again. I had recalibrated once with the original boards by 2*, but then ended up setting it back to default.
