How Much Do You Boil Off?

I'm on my 5th AG batch and I've been having trouble with the boil off. I keep collecting more and more wort but I always seem to end up shy of my anticipated 5.5 gallons. I'm always worried about the boil not being vigorous enough or pulling too much from the mash tun. I'm still experimenting...

    Do homebrewers smoke?

I smoked for 15 years and quit 3 years back. I will sneak one or two a year when I've had way too much to drink and I enjoy a cigar once a month or so. I hate to say it but I really really loved smoking and do miss it but it's just not worth it health and money wise anymore.

Refractometer??? Good one for beer?? AHS special

I got my refractometer from Austin Homebrew just a few weeks back and already have used it on three batches and I love how much easier it has been. I made sure to do all my reading up on them and knew how to use it and when I needed a conversion before I started using it. I will say though...

    Oops! Stir bar.

I usually do use a magnet to keep the sucker in the flask, but my mind was somewhere else and I just spaced. I knew it would happen sooner or later.

    Oops! Stir bar.

Someone, anyone please tell me that when they dumped a starter into the wort that the stir bar went in with it. I feel like a moron and I know (hope) that I can't be the only person this has happened to. Now I just have to remember to strain it out during the yeast wash.

    What level are you?

I've been brewing for about four months and have made a batch once every couple of weeks or so. In this time I went from extract to AG and from bottling to keggging. I read everything I can get my hands on whenever I have time and I try to learn something new about this addiction every day...

    Do you support your LHBS?

I have one LHBS within 15 minutes and another about thirty minutes away. Both have friendly smart owners, but both are overpriced and have very odd hours. Unless I need something right away and they happen to be open or they have a great deal on something I tend to buy online. The convenience...

    Poll: Are you a musician?

I voted yes. I've played bass for ten plus years and just started banging around on the drums in the last few months. I suck at both but it's a good outlet.

    Keg Connection

Just an update. I received everything that was missing out of my box via UPS this morning. I'm a little disappointed that after a mistake like this it wasn't shipped in a more expedient manner. But no huge loss. You really can't get into something like homebrewing without learning a little...

    30 minute boil??

it's my first all grain day and I chose a Blue Moon Belgian White clone from Austin Homebrew. I should have really read through the sheet that came with it last night but I waited until I put my strike water on to browse through it. Now on the instructions it says that once the wort comes to a...

    Keg Connection

I put in an order on September 12 for six kegs, a regulator, a CO2 tank and 7 smaller items. I received the order today and was missing a 5 of the things I had ordered. I put a call in and the person I spoke to told me to give him 20 minutes so he could find out what had happened and he would...

    Simple Immersion Wort Chiller

I just made a chiller following the OP instructions and it formed up nice but I hate compression fittings. I've never had much luck with them and they tend to leak on me. I'm working on it.

Why I love Austin Homebrew supply

I've only been brewing for a very short time and have only ordered from Austin Homebrew twice now but have been extremely happy both times. I'm still on extract kits but they came out excellent and the instructions were fantastic. Even living in Mass the shipping is pretty quick. My one...
