got my refractometer, alcohol scale only!?

I ordered a refractometer on ebay, one which supposedly has 0-40 brix and 0-25 alcohol %. I know the alcohol scale is totally bogus and was really getting it for the real brix reading. Well I get this thing and it only has a 0-25 alcohol % scale!! I mean WTF, that's total horse crap! That...

    Answer these 3 questions immediately!

"English Pub Ale" extract recipe from here with double the bittering hops and DME. It's my first homebrew, it's kegged, and came out AWESOME. I'm listening to the baby monitor and one of the boy's watching TV in the other room. I have a hard apple cider that's been in the primary for two...

    English Pub Ale (Extract)

I used this recipe with the following changes: 2 oz of goldings for 60 min instead of 1 oz, 2 lbs of DME instead of 1 lb, and Nottingham yeast (dry, rehydrated). I doubled the DME to get more ABV and as my luck has it the Nottingham quit at 1.020 (from 1.049) so the beer is at it's original...

I just kegged my first brew!

Hey all, I just racked my first brew into a keg! My original gravity was 1.049, I left in in primary for 1 week, secondary for 4 weeks, all at a temperature of about 65-68 F. It came out real clear and I also "cold" crashed it for a couple of days in my garage. From looking at it, and since...

Irish Red Ale Quaffable Irish Red (Extract)

Yeah I get my stuff from Noble Grape in Burnside they seem to know what they're doing and have a decent amount of beer supplies. That would be awesome! I live in Dartmouth and work in Bedford. I'm only getting ready to keg my first brew and if it's any good I'll return the favour. PM on...

Irish Red Ale Quaffable Irish Red (Extract)

Jamie3, that looks really good!! I see you're also in Nova Scotia, cool! What LHBS do you go to where you had to substitute? I'm making this next.

    Keg question

To the guys in this thread that do 30# for a day or two, do you shake the keg at all?

Foam but no bubbles in solution

This seems to be a common problem and not in the FAQ. I am having the same problem with a ginger ale that's my first thing ever kegged. Trying to learn the ropes before kegging my beer. Subscribed.

solution for one tank, multiple carb levels

Thank for that info. I was wondering if it worked that way. I guess I'll keep an eye out for inline regulators. Thanks, guys.

solution for one tank, multiple carb levels

Right, I forgot to mention this was another question I had; and also are the parts "food safe" and does it matter (probably)? I'm going to check out Princess Auto soon, I think they have more parts and fittings, including ones for CO2. BTW that valve / gauge costs $30.

solution for one tank, multiple carb levels

Hi all, I was at Canadian Tire over lunch getting parts to build a carbonator cap when I saw something else. I recently picked up some corny kegs and a CO2 tank and plan on kegging both sodas and beer. I read that people have problems with the differing carb levels since soda is usually carbed...

    soda next to beer.

Are you guys saying that by having soda on the same CO2 lines as beer will get the soda smell through all of the lines?

Can you tell what size this tank is?

Thanks, everyone. I think I'll pick this up even though I'd prefer a 10 lb tank. At least this should fit into a fridge easily.

Can you tell what size this tank is?

Hi, I'm about to pick up a CO2 tank, regulator, and 3 corny kegs for $125. The guy thinks the tank might be 20 lb but it looks too small to me. He said it's 15" tall up to the regulator. I'm thinking it's only a 5 lb but I don't have any experience with these tanks. What do you think...

    English Pub Ale (Extract)

I just plugged this recipe into qbrew and the ABV came out to be only 3.3%, is that correct? That's pretty low. If that's the case, I have another pound of DME that I could throw in there to bump it up to about 4.2%.

    English Pub Ale (Extract)

Great, thanks. I have all of the ingredients (subbed dry nottingham yeast) and should be brewing this tomorrow. It's my first batch of beer! :)

    English Pub Ale (Extract)

Is the 40L here an extract or steeping grains? I have 0.5 lb of crushed 40L to steep, is that correct?

Propeller ESB is so good, I need an extract clone

Hey guys and gals, I'm on my second bomber of Propeller ESB tonight and man this beer is so damn good. It is definitely my favorite beer and has been since last summer when I first tried it. Propeller is a microbrewery here in Halifax and most if not all of their beers are really good...
